i just got this game and played it for a few days. i've stopped playing it. it's not what one may think. the game is freaking awesome! it's just that i can't get past the old looks of the game (i' one of those annoying "i gon't play games with last gen graphics" kinda guy lol). i hope they ake a free space 3. based on what i played in FS2, i would GLADLY cough up even 70 buck to buy it.

I dont think Freelancer qualifies as a space sim as it is more of a shooter than a simulator. The X-Universe however is more elaborate on all fronts but lacks the all out action Freelancer has. Then there is Battlecruiser 3000 A.D. (Universal Combat) which is more of an all round tactical simulator both in space, on planet surfaces and anywhere in between. It has by far the most detail in micromanagement what the X-Universe has in macromanagement.
@avin154 You can get it for 5-6 euro/dollar on GOG com. Make sure to head to FSOInstaller com after you installed the game to get an automatic installer that installs most current modifications, campaigns and everything else you need to make the game look great - even much better than what you can see in this video.
@xFighterboYx Freespace 1 was released in 1998, which itself is a continuation of the Descent series which started I believe in 1994 or so. Freespace 2 was released in 1999.
EVE online was, according to Wikipedia, released on May 6th of 2003 in North America.

@nemanja604 For me the controls are rather simple. A to accelerate, Z to decelerate, mouse buttons (make sure to activate Mouse in Options) to aim, fire primary and secondaries. In case of missiles, spam C for countermeasures. That sums it up for me personally. ;)
@CrazyJayBe When I recorded this video I didn't have the sound set up that I use now - it was mono-sound, loud and particularly painful on the ears if played for 6-7 minutes. I added a short clip with the original sound at the end so you can see what I mean.
the game does look good but i don't care for the graphics i want story! most gamers wouldn't give two craps about story but i am one too speak out against idiocracy. But don't get me wrong a good story line and good gameplay and good graphics would shake up my world

There needs to be another game like this on the PC there should be a new one with better graphics with more races and dare i say more ships. I loved it you could select black ops missions you could choose you weapons load out your squad load out when promoted command total of 3 or 4 squads. If you failed a mission you wouldn't fail the game simply make the next one harder or you wouldnt get all your medals. I miss these in depth single player games tired of all these multilayer focused games

Note many folks on hlp have been playing the game for way too long and are very grouchy.
it is beond me why they havent created more free space games or atleast make new versions of the first 2 these are legendary games where no other games comes close it is a shame
@technosurfer92 I've created the background myself, though it wasnt fully perfect. A more ideal way to make backgrounds now is with a 6-sided 'bubble' around the player as it allows extreme detail to be added (Blue Planet War in Heaven used that method, for instance).

I know its not fully like freespace was (landing in ships) but its nice to play it, and with allot of action. you can choose after level 5 one of 2 sides and can play against other players from the other faction you didn't choose online. You also can blow up large ships.

How on earth can Freespace 2 be 12 years old, it plays and look gorgeus, and i have yet to dl mods and stuff. At first i was scared about all the t-bord features. @Galimah Iam glad that you like it buddy. However enjoy the campaign now and try later some mods like "Blue Planet" or "Inferno" and the like. Those will let your jaws drop again to the floor ;).
@hdckdsadd You need three things for fire. A source of heat, oxygen, and a fuel. I figure the fuel would be the various materials that make up the ship itself and the whatever energy source the ship was using. The source of heat would be the missiles/lasers used to destroy it. And the oxygen would come from the onboard air supply.
@hdckdsadd Well, the missiles must contain a Ammount of Oxygen to produce a explosion, But they need too a Ammount of fuel, they can equip them with whatever that can explode making a Huge explosion, and once they hit something they can make some fire inside the missile to make it explode, easy :)
However keep in mind that this game is more then a decade old (1999) and its natural that its textures can only be as good as the games engine allows. It should be reworked from ground up to implement DX 11 features etc. but this would cost a fortune so it would be logical to rather make a sequel to it labeled as "Freespace 3" but unfortunately this may never happen.
On the other hand we nowadays have still games nowadays that set you up into a plane even if its only a jetplane and not a spacecraft. Unfortunately those games are more arcade-like then simulator-like. An example would be Tom Clancys HAWX. So we could conclude that games that allow you flying in a plane around a battlefield are still considered to be "in".
Unfortunately Freespace is A LOT different to arcade games as its a simulator game which is set in space and thats why some people think that those times of those games are over, though I personally do not see it this way as described before.
I imagine that FS 3 with an updated engine, 7.1 surround (for the beam guns sounds and anti-fighter beams, flak guns etc.), an equal storyline that sets some time after the events of FS 2 with dx 11 features would in terms of the gfx alone set new standards in the games world and I dare to say due to the detailed space ships that we are allowed to see in FS 1 and 2 that the detail would grow considerably with a new installment.
It would even make top looking upcoming games like Crysis 2 look like sissys in comparison.
I mean imagine a SJ Sathanas or even new undiscovered ships from shivans with a multitude of different weapons and turrets with their own subsystems around the ship (hangar bay, sensors, beam guns in various sizes, etc.) in detailed textures with HW tesselation and +6kms on a screen where all guns are blazing and you litteraly feel the power of these super capital ships during a battle.
I mean alone the clash of those gigantic ships powering up their huge beam guns in all detail around the Epsilon Pegasi Jump node in the vicinity of its star, or wherever you want, would make you feel as if you are once again in a intergalactic war against the great destroyers let alone the textures and possible detail of the ships with the current development advancements!
The Battles would look even more intense and the weapons would feel even more epic! ! !
@Kamfrenchie The easiest way to get FS & FS2 is to get it from GOG, for $6, DRM free. This means you can save the installer and never worry about "activating it." Once you get that, you should get the latest source code project upgrade v3.6.12 (as of 11/2010), which significantly enhances everything. I would imagine finding the original 2-CD set would be difficult; eBay or Amazon might be the only places that might have them.
I never play Freelancer or Freelancer 2 but i think i give it a try, i think it´s near of gameplay from Egosofts X2 The Threat. btw Video looks awesome. ^^
This and Wing Commander III: The Heart of the Tiger are my two favourite entries in the Space Combat Sim genre. REALLY wish someone could revive this style of game and do it right. In the 90's, these types were THE SHIT.

Freelancer ships simply dont pack the firepower of several kilometer long FS 2 Super Capital ships with +80 turrets consisting of anti-fighter beam guns, flak guns, missile turrets and last but not least huge Anti capital beam guns that rip holes through other ships ;). Sorry mate but this game simply HAS the RAW FIREPOWER and EPICNESS and MONSTROSITY ;).
Freespace 2 is the most critically acclaimed real time (possibly real time, i'm not sure) strategy game of 2012...

@Galimah It certainly IS not only a contender but a game that is on a complete different scale then a console game buddy ;). I said it once and I say it again play it! Don't judge it just because you see some youtube vids, delve into the Freespace universe and you will understand why its considered THE BEST 3d action space sim on our "blue planet" ;).

@ajsknight I took u on your words m8. Got the game and have now played it for 2 days...with minimum sleep. What can i say... Its is majestic, fantastic and overhelming. How on earth can Freespace 2 be 12 years old, it plays and look gorgeus, and i have yet to dl mods and stuff. At first i was scared about all the t-bord features. One litterly use every god damn button on it, but after the initial CHOCK this game is...i LOVE it. Colony wars, wing commander and X=wing...pfffft

@Galimah Iam glad that you like it buddy. However enjoy the campaign now and try later some mods like "Blue Planet" or "Inferno" and the like. Those will let your jaws drop again to the floor ;).

@hdckdsadd You need three things for fire. A source of heat, oxygen, and a fuel. I figure the fuel would be the various materials that make up the ship itself and the whatever energy source the ship was using. The source of heat would be the missiles/lasers used to destroy it. And the oxygen would come from the onboard air supply.

@hdckdsadd Well, the missiles must contain a Ammount of Oxygen to produce a explosion, But they need too a Ammount of fuel, they can equip them with whatever that can explode making a Huge explosion, and once they hit something they can make some fire inside the missile to make it explode, easy :)

Gameplay and special effects still stand the test of time. But the textures do not.

@net200910 Yup.
However keep in mind that this game is more then a decade old (1999) and its natural that its textures can only be as good as the games engine allows. It should be reworked from ground up to implement DX 11 features etc. but this would cost a fortune so it would be logical to rather make a sequel to it labeled as "Freespace 3" but unfortunately this may never happen.

On the other hand we nowadays have still games nowadays that set you up into a plane even if its only a jetplane and not a spacecraft. Unfortunately those games are more arcade-like then simulator-like. An example would be Tom Clancys HAWX. So we could conclude that games that allow you flying in a plane around a battlefield are still considered to be "in".

Unfortunately Freespace is A LOT different to arcade games as its a simulator game which is set in space and thats why some people think that those times of those games are over, though I personally do not see it this way as described before.

I imagine that FS 3 with an updated engine, 7.1 surround (for the beam guns sounds and anti-fighter beams, flak guns etc.), an equal storyline that sets some time after the events of FS 2 with dx 11 features would in terms of the gfx alone set new standards in the games world and I dare to say due to the detailed space ships that we are allowed to see in FS 1 and 2 that the detail would grow considerably with a new installment.

It would even make top looking upcoming games like Crysis 2 look like sissys in comparison.
I mean imagine a SJ Sathanas or even new undiscovered ships from shivans with a multitude of different weapons and turrets with their own subsystems around the ship (hangar bay, sensors, beam guns in various sizes, etc.) in detailed textures with HW tesselation and +6kms on a screen where all guns are blazing and you litteraly feel the power of these super capital ships during a battle.

I mean alone the clash of those gigantic ships powering up their huge beam guns in all detail around the Epsilon Pegasi Jump node in the vicinity of its star, or wherever you want, would make you feel as if you are once again in a intergalactic war against the great destroyers let alone the textures and possible detail of the ships with the current development advancements!
The Battles would look even more intense and the weapons would feel even more epic! ! !

@Kamfrenchie The easiest way to get FS & FS2 is to get it from GOG, for $6, DRM free. This means you can save the installer and never worry about "activating it." Once you get that, you should get the latest source code project upgrade v3.6.12 (as of 11/2010), which significantly enhances everything. I would imagine finding the original 2-CD set would be difficult; eBay or Amazon might be the only places that might have them.

I never play Freelancer or Freelancer 2 but i think i give it a try, i think it´s near of gameplay from Egosofts X2 The Threat. btw Video looks awesome. ^^

This and Wing Commander III: The Heart of the Tiger are my two favourite entries in the Space Combat Sim genre. REALLY wish someone could revive this style of game and do it right. In the 90's, these types were THE SHIT.

@Helldiver450 nope sorry buddy. Freelancer ships simply dont pack the firepower of several kilometer long FS 2 Super Capital ships with +80 turrets consisting of anti-fighter beam guns, flak guns, missile turrets and last but not least huge Anti capital beam guns that rip holes through other ships ;). Sorry mate but this game simply HAS the RAW FIREPOWER and EPICNESS and MONSTROSITY ;).
