  • 4:27 the graphic shows 28 private sector employees and only 24 public sector ones, so of course it will show that there are "more low paid and high paid employees" in the private sector, there are just more employees shown.

  • Do MPs understand "averages"? If in

Group A: 90 earn £10,000 p.a. giving an annual salary total of: £900,000

10 earn £250,000 p.a. for a total of: £2,500,000, an overall total of £3,400,000 and an average of: £34,000

    Group B:

90 earn £20,000 p.a. giving an annual salary total of: £1,800,000

10 earn £100,000 p.a. for a total of: £1,000,000 an overall total of £2,800,000 and an average of : £28,000

Would MPs cut back the salaries of the 90 in Group A?

  • Thanks for that. There's been a lot of misleading information in the news on this topic and even on the ONS report in the last few days. The video clarifies well that comparisons between the sectors are complicated. My opinion is that as the public sector offers a fairer deal for its lower paid workers it should be encouraged to maintain its wage structures. We should not bash it because the private sector doesn't do the same (not least because of the skill/age differences that the video shows)
