  • Nice attempt, but I could have saved them the time. The atomic structure of the rubber bonds to not go up in a 1:1 ratio with the increasing size of the band. Expecting this band to be as strong and fly as far as a smaller band would be like expecting a human to lift an elephant, because that'd be the proportionate strength of an ant, at our same size. Still, I'm glad someone did this...really fun.

  • True, they did leave slack in the band. But I doubt they were allowed to stretch it to full capacity. If it actually had enough energy to travel one mile, it would have been a danger to everyone around. Someone getting cut in half is not good game show fun.

    the principle of inertia at work though the giant rubber band has a size advantage it has a surface area that is to large. so as it tries to move in 1 direction at a constant speed its area is affected by friction with the air and is slows to a stop.

  • Besides the wind factor, the thing probably weighed atleast 20 pounds. A rubber band that ways an ounce or two will fly alot farther because of its weight and because of its aerodynamics. Beyond that, I do believe that it was not strecthed enough, perhaps out of fear of breaking it?

  • POINT - you could tell when they were trying to strech the band that the and had a slight dip in the middle, therefore meaning it was not streched enough

  • It wouldn't matter how far they pulled it back, the fact is, the weight of the band would make it sag regardless of how much tension u put across it. What they should have done really, is added a heavy weight to the back of the band, which would make it slingshot forward. like omnitool said, it wouldbe like throwing a feather as hard as u cna. no matter how much effort u put in, it won't go far. gutted on them! thought they would've thought of that really :S

  • The people running that were idiots. When u pull back a normal rubber band u dont do it so that it is still swaying, so if they pulled it back in proportion to how a normal rubber band is pulled back it probably would have worked.

  • Even if they'd stretched out that giant rubber band further, the extra weight wouldn't be enough to counteract the force of air resistance against the band's larger surface area. In fact, snapping it harder would cause it to hit terminal velocity faster, and more energy would be expended in the acceleration than at medium tension. Thus, it probably wouldn't go even as far as it did.
