@chitrakuut This piece was written by Niyamat Khan ( pen name- 'sadarang'), a court poet of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah 'Rangila'. This piece was written with Muhammad Shah Rangila in mind. It harks back to the rich, vibrant musical tradition that combined the best of Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. The language used for the rendition is Braj-Bhasha and the imagery is typical of its period. Panditji has sung this piece marvelously and it remains my all-time favorite!
@chitrakuut Dear Friend, This piece evokes marble pavilions, rain clouds, dancing peacocks and verdant gardens. It is a chalice of fragrant wine and I invite you to partake of it with the following lyrics to the song:
Mohammad Shah Rangeele re Balama
Tum Bin Maika Kaari Badariya
Nit Na Suhaave Umad Ghumad Ghan Aawe
Naina son jhar Lagaawe,Tarasaawe
Sadarangeele Ko Dukh Daawe
Chamak Bichh Daraawe
Panditji's rendition seems to have some differences as to its lyrics.
This performance should be titled Bhimsen Ki Malhar ,for he is the Modern day Taansen. This is Mastery at it's zenith, the culmination of One pointed dedication and Love for Sangeet. It really does not get any better than this. The sheer intensity to unite with the Raaga is so evident.
I have never heard anyone surpass this performance of Raga Miyan ki Malhar. He isnt merely singing, but painting the entire scene in our minds - as the clouds gather, the environment feels a little darker, small rain drop start kissing the face of earth, peacocks celebrate the moment with their own tunes, and then the entire build up of clouds explodes into heavy shower, and it rains with all the splendour and thunder one is capable of imagining !
Outstanding! It is this part of Hindusthani music I love more than Carnatic. You can can give it several names, but listening to such a voice and music is a bliss and fortunate are we, to have these means to listen to it time and again, though not fortunate to hear every song sung by these great scholars.
I chanced upon this video a week ago. No music has shaken me to the core like this. I have watched this video many, many times. The end of the vilambit gat is electrifying. Every time the drut gat starts, I have involuntary tears streaming down and my hands tremble. This captures Panditji in his prime. I can only imagine that in his mind nothing must exist but this heavenly music, and when he pours out his soul like this, in the end, he must feel there is nothing left to accomplish.
Please notice that there are no microphones in this. It is a private beithak at home, and I have personally experienced the sheers intensity and volume of B. Joshi's singing from 10 feet away...and nothing but great clarity and power in his voice. Notice most of the taans are all in 3 octave range and also lasting as long as 16 seconds with amazing rhythmic patterns therein. Long live Pandit Bhimsen Joshi....inspiring!
@parimalguy - the microphones must have been placed at a distance...or may be hanging up......coz the sound has come out very balanced....with clarity......ofcourse the ENERGY that panditji has is BREATH STOPPING...
the slower composition is caled "Karima nama tero". the faster peice is called " mohamamed shah rangile" who was a famous 18th century indian ruler who promoted the arts and music.
Well I go off complaining how unfair it is Panditji hasn't got a Bharat Ratna - and he promptly gets one!
Maybe I should complain about Vishwanathan Anand as well - even he has a Padma Vibhushan and deserves a Bharat Ratna (may he'll get it in a couple years!)
Pranams and congratulations to Panditji on his well deserved and well earned Bharat Ratna.
Breathtaking!! Very intense!! I get chills everytime I listen to Pt. Joshi. He is the GOD of Sangeeth. Please upload more videos. I hope Indian Govt. awards him with Bharatha Ratna, truly HE IS!!
Truly no Indian musician deserves Bharat Ratna more than Pandit Bhimsen Joshi - he already has Padma Shri, Bhushan, and Vibhushan.
He deserves Bharat Ratna because of his single-minded commitment to his music, his adventurous spirit, his unsurpassable technique, and his boundless love for his guru, Sawai Gandharva!
Look at the rapt attention on the faces of the audience and the accompanists. Lucky ones to have caught that performance so up close !

All raagas starting with "miyan" are tribute to "Miyan Tansen" - Famous singer and one of ashta ratnas (8 Gems) of Mugul ruler Akbar's court.
This raga miyan ki malhar is about rain...
shrinik1969 2 years ago
Miyan tansen modified the raag malhar and made it as miyan ki mallar

When was this recorded ... somewhere in 70's? It is refreshing to see panditjee in his early 30-40's?
