  • hey, can you send me (or upload) the .mp3 of this recording? it's different than the one i already have but i love the violin solo on this recording since it's got a heavier sound than the other one.

  • It's very nice ! I like this !

  • intense

  • AMAZING

  • okay this is totally unrelated to the song or anything, but what is the Holy Handgrenade doing in the picture?

  • @Dreadmonkey1 Just like there is a pope and a king in the picture, the holy grenade is probably another symbol of worship/life (walking with the dead, of course. xD)

  • Haxän!!!

  • i love the image you used. what is it?

  • @gloly :

  • it was one of the bard songs in a homecomputer game, "the bard's tale"

  • dankeschön We are lulled to sleep by a strange beautiful tune, the last music we hear...

  • This piece has been played on nurmeous

classical music stations. And was playe in The movie Tombstone

  • Je confirme le "s" à la fin se prononce.

I confirm what melkorzeblack said, the final "s" at the end of Saëns is not mute.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember listening to and learning about this in Music way back when I was at school.

  • it's pretty obvious that the 's' is pronounced beacause there's an 'e' following^^

  • I remembered this song from a playstation 1 game -101 dalmations. It was so hard to find, kept thinking it was Fossils (^_^)

    I love the beginning. 0:24

  • im french and i play music, actually cello. i can tell you you the s is pronounced. dun say shit when you dunno

  • No, it is not...You're an obvious liar. Je le sais parce que je suis francais.. Si tu penses le contraire, c'est que tu es un analphabète.

  • I love this song! I get to play it in marching band. the show is sooooooooooo cool!!!!

  • my marching band is palying sheherizade by rimsky korsekov

  • me too! phs!

  • LOL! GO Center Grove High School!! (indiana)

  • this song is actually scary to me, its that well written

  • Immense Camille Saint-Saens!!!!!!

  • wow!

  • Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages - won't you take a nice waltz with Death!?

  • this song is played in the game "Alone in the dark 1" when the demons dance

  • Saint-Saens' best work, and in second place the organ concerto, and in third the Carnival of the Animals? Anyone else agree?

  • i don't know... i'm a big fan of his Danse Bacchanale

  • i heard this on the credits for Johnathon Creek last night and staight away started it on the guitar. Brilliant musical ideas here. The violin playing the main theme is sick. Any other Saint Saens recommendations?? please reply

  • The Dying swan

  • thanks but not my cup of tea :p

    I'm quite melancholy tbh.

Cello concerto no1 sounds good so far though!

  • this one, the aquarium and the dying swan are definitely the best

  • Definitely his "Organ" symphony number 3, final movement. It's huge!

  • this is my favourite classical piece, and this is also my favourite rendition. it is quite often massacred, but this one stands apart from the rest. truly haunting. i love it.

killzfrfun, please post your recording. of course, no two recordings can sound the same, but i love to hear different versions...look for the 'florence piano duet' on here. they do an almost brilliant rendition. saint-saens = genius x

  • This song makes me sad :(

  • i <3 this song the preformance was wonderful and my mom got it on tape

  • i love this song im playing it in my middle school orchestra on tuesday next week in concert cant wait im playing first violin.... oh its going to be so much fun!

  • Awesome song!

  • its like really intense, playing that at my funeral

  • wow its great

  • Best Version i heard.

  • Does anybody know which orchestra is playing this specific version?

  • I really love this song, could someone please upload a video that shows how to play it at piano (the original (the 2 minutes one)) please?

  • Superbe, magnidique, une musique qu'on a tendance à oublier alors qu'elle a sa place parmi les plus grandes.

    Just wonderfull, so beautifull

  • who's painting?

  • Great song! I like it!

  • Can you turn the volume up a bit?

  • ooowyeah! love that violin melody

  • You can see why it was used for the Jonathan Creek theme tune, it's got a really sinister (yet sublime) quality to it that really suits the creepy, slightly odd TV series :)

  • for a different take on this click on the user name and select!

  • This sounds creepy! But beautiful, of course.

  • OMG,my teacher want me to play this !!!!! I'm dead for sure!

  • Ahhh this is a fun song to play. I've been tryin to remember the name of it for the longest time and finally stumbled across it.

I played it probably 7 years ago now...yikes.

  • Please, does any of you know what performance (conductor/label) is this?

  • jesus. and i thought that Moldau was a hard song to play. O___O

  • english(dance of death)

Zig!Zig!Zig! Death is strikeing a tomb with his heel in cadence.Death is playing a tune on his violin at midnight. The winter wind blows, and the night is dark. From the liden trees come's moans. White skeletons move across the shadows. Running and leaping in their sounds. Zig!Zig!Zig! Each one shakes himself and the dancer's bones rattle. Hush! They sudenly leave off danceing. they just on another they flee. The roster has crowed.

  • J'adore :)

  • aweseome!

  • played this song freshman year

  • Wow... How good was the soloist?

Ours this year is pretty bad.

  • amazing! he went on to julliard

  • O_O...

Wow... I wish I could go to Julliard. man...

     he/she must be really good

  • i gotta do it for school to wot school u go to i go to heanor gate (very rubbish school)

  • I have to play this song for school

  • BELLISIMO!

  • I haven't listened to this song since my fifth grade music class!I loved this one!Considering the upcoming fright night this month, I think watching his vid is completely appropiate..wow. You know, this has nothing to do with the vid, but this is an amazing piece of music&the fact that the govt. is attempting to pull the arts from public schooling really pisses me off!I'm glad I was exposed to the arts when I was.Shit bites man.But yeah, this song is truly a remarkable work of art and history.

  • what school were u at

  • Wow. Loved the solo instrument sounds. Needed to hear the "real thing," so thank you.

  • This an inferior version.

  • lol

  • NO COMENTS, JUST THE BEST

  • Thank you!

  • I love this melody, but being a dumb american, how do you pronounce the name of the composer. Phoneticaly, I mean.

  • That's okay, I'm a dumb Costarican, and learning is part of the fun... (Was it silly intead of dumb? :D)

You should say san-SAHN. Your voice should be stronger on the second syllable. The first 'a' is as in ART. 'Ah' is like the word AWE.

"Saint-Saëns ART is AWEsome". The memory aid is for free, he he he! ;)

  • I was pretty sure it was more like

sayn-SONE, with a light pronunciation on the second N.

  • I'm Francophone, and i must say that you have to pronounce the «S» at the end of «Saëns». It must sound like the word «Sense».

  • As a French speaker, I would say the true French way to pronounce SAËNS is "sAense" (I mean, you take the word "sense" and you put a A between the first S and the E.) The letter A must be pronounced like galphi told you, long months ago!!!

Hope that helped you. Sorry for my English!!!

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with your English, as it is written here.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • You are almost right, the correct pronunciation would be similar to sense but its more like 'say-en'. the umlaut over any letter in French means that the vowel is to be pronounced separately instead of in a diphthong pattern.

  • Also, the s is silent as are most letters at the ending in French.

  • True.

  • amazing piece of music

  • what picture is that

  • any body ever notice the Danny Elfman ripped of the tone and feel of this piece for the Beatlejuice score?

  • I discovered this song a few weeks ago, and it would be just amazing if my high school band played it. I would love my band directors for it. I do wish I had clarinet sheet music for this song.

  • We're doing for christmas concert at our school and its going to be great! (not to gloat or anything!) :)

  • I find it slightly amusing how in either this or Carnival of the Animals he's recycled the fossils tune. In that it's the same bit of music - dunno which came first and wikipedia is too many clicks away.

  • fossils was "spoofing" Danse Macabre, acccording to Saint-Saens, according to Wiki.

  • Ah, thanks. Stands to reason. Similar theme and all (pun unintended).

  • johnathan creek

  • Yes-Jonathan Creek~~also Midsomer Murders. Must have replied to different version!! There are a few~!

  • Huh?

  • jonathan creek!

  • Where can I get the MP3 of this?

  • Jepp!!! FinalfantasyX2lol hat recht!!!

    das is toll!!

(ja linda! ich mag das auch!!!)

  • im studyng this peice at school

    its quite good though

  • This view is over 9000!!!!!!!

  • SPOOKSLOT RULES

  • Learn more about playing instrument and theory then go think its interesting ;D

  • I listen to classic rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Iron Maiden for the most part, but I love this song. My band is doing a cover of it. I wish more teenagers could appreciate music...

  • Even classical music?

  • Any kind of music that isn't commercial sellout stuff. Music that is music for the sake of music, not money and popularity.

  • Understandable.

  • a surreal music and interestingly very nice one. it really scares me

  • who is the artist?

  • Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921)

  • I love this so much - I can just imagine a skeleton jumping round a graveyard playing a violin for some reason!!!

  • Used in games like "Alone in teh Dark 1". Great piece of classical music.

  • for another take on this...click on the user name and select!

  • Actually, the Danse Macabre is a known allegory wich appears un french litterature I think.

It is basically the fact that we are all equal when death comes. In graphic arts, this allegory is represented as a dance where a an emperor, a king, a pope, a soldier, a young virgin and a young man hold each other's hands; all being pictured as skeletons. Everyone will dance together when dead. And this song represents the sabbat of those who once were separated by life.

  • nice, that sheds light on this wonderful piece!

  • it is a very morbid but practical view of life basically

  • one of my favorite tunes

    xxx

  • The tempo is much more fast in this one than the other versions I've heard. I really like it better this way.

  • Hi,

I love this version. do you know what recording it is? Any help would be great thanks :)

  • we listened to this in music in my 1st year of highschool lol,now 2 years on i wanted to hear it again and i found it yay!

  • lol, exactly the same! but 5 years on! :)

  • Great composition, it's one of my favorites. Although I like the piano version better.

  • I am a cellist, and I am playing this piece with my orchestra (in high school) and I am in love with it! I think its one of the best pieces we are playing this year.

  • Very Sinister, but brilliant! Saint-Seans is a true genius of dark classical music for a piece like Danse Macabre. Perfect for any Horror film in Italy or for Halloween.

  • Does anyone have the first violin sheet music?

  • Does anyone have the sheet music for this for Organ?

  • i played it with my class orchestra and some band members holy crap its cool and the xylaphone, since it means rattling bones it always givesme a chill down my spine.

  • Ha, I love the twelve notes in the beginning: Midnight. Sweet theme, and the tritone, as the "Devil's chord" fits in perfectly! I love this piece.

  • When I hear that chord, I always picture the devil tuning it's violin, preparing to force the listner to danse for all eternity!

  • Ha, I do too! It's such perfect imagery in notes.

  • Good observation, BorisCr! In music theory it's called a tritone (interval of 3 whole tones) and often referred as the Devil's chord.

  • haha were playing this in orchestra its not so hard for cellos :P well sorta in some parts

  • cellists rock! i played this in a halloween concert a couple years ago. funn.

  • haha yea

    go cellos ^^

  • i love the tritone. this piece is amazing :] trills and tritones, much fun to play on violin XD(which is what i play :P)

  • cool

  • Beatifull art

  • einfach wunderschön

  • Cool, what is the image from? Looks like Durer meets Gilbert and George :o

  • what can i say the songs brill the violins great =]

  • this the best song ever!!!! i choreographed a dance piece to it for my senior project....and now im playing it in symphony! im sooooo excited!!! (i play double bass)

oh! camille saint-saens rocks my socks!!!!

  • Ha ha no way.....im playing this for Humboldt Symphony...coincidence i dont think so..im second chair viola =]

  • Keep rockin' that viola!

  • violins are cooler

  • I loved this song in 1-6th grade, and still think its aswesome

  • Very nice. :) I play the violin myself. I love classical music.

  • im doing a fun assignment in music. gr.8 is soooooooooooooooooooo much fun!!!!!

    oh and history love it!

  • haha,

right now i'm thinking my music teacher

    haha,

  • I remember in elementary school my music teacher spent a couple days on this song in preparation for Halloween. I remember liking the song just as much then as I do now :-)

  • Holy crap that's creepy.

  • in the bottom center, it's the HOLY HAND GRENADE!!!!!

  • First, thou shalt count to three...

    love Danse Macabre (and Python)

  • lol you just took all the seriousness out of this piece :D

  • it's soo hard to play it though

  • It is call an orb! It is an attribute of royalty. It being on the floor could mean that all power ultimately fail before death!

  • Violin solo = Bone chillingly amazing!

  • There is a jumpstyle-song with this melody.. From Jeckyll & hyde.. Does somebody know how the song called?

    I like this version tooo.

At school we had a whole lesson about it. =)

    something about skeletons ..

They standing up out of there gray & they gonna party:D.

but the cock crowed (my english isn't good..) and the skeletons run away. One "person" plays a sad song.

    end. xD

  • The song is Jeckyll & Hyde - La Dans Macabre.

I have it and it's amazing, just like the orginal.

  • thanks!

  • sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. I wub this tune!

  • so lovely, i love this song!

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • Mr Tourette, Ch 4's Modern Toss. Ring any bells?

  • the tune starting from 0:44 to 0:48 is also featuring in another song. In that song a woman is singing. What song is it??

  • great sound. nice picture. i love camille sain-seans.

    thanx ☺

  • excellent!Thank you for posting this beautiful piece. One of my favourites.

  • Danse Macabre is the best!!!

  • seems strangely apropriate this Christmas.

  • odd, because we played this with my orchestra after halloween...BOO!

  • Oh Saint Saëns is amazing! Top of the tops! He's still one of my favorites composers. This piece is a glorious one! My poor violin covered with dust. I feel sad.
