operistica, how many times are you giving your own opinions the thums ups.? when Eglise came from Miami she already had 10 yrs of studying and I knew her from Cuba and yes she was awesome and she won several auditions, but NOW, she isnt sounding like that anymore, her voice is with no timbre and very dirty in the coloraturas. Grow Up.

I studied with the same voice teacher as Eglises Gutierrez´s Teacher in Cuba. I had the oportunity to listen to her voice when she arrived in Miami years ago and she sang for me in front of my group among things The Casta Diva¨ with the Cabaletta. She had voice that made you stop and consider that she could have been one of the best singers in the world, after that seeing her with her ups and downs It is with sadness that I must say she sould get away from whoever is guiding her now.

I'm afraid for her too... Her voice sounds tough here and not as flexible and clean as 2 years ago. Someone is not advising here well... There is a lot of "unintentional" jealousy in this career. Most "world class" and freak teachers try to impose there beliefs about singing and ruin the nature of the voice. I hope someone tells her before it is too late!
How sad that a teacher would give a young singer Casta Diva as a beginning Aria.Has anyone from your teachers group ended up with a better career than Ms. Gutierrez is having??? Many people with limited knowledge have tried to make Ms. Gutierrez sing the wrong repertoire it is so wonderful that whoever has guided her has taken her down the Bel Canto Path. When a singer like Eglise has won competitions and sung so beautifully in so many great theaters for many years I can understand your pain.
@Opera4Ever21 I saw her tonight. I don't know what the hell you're talking about with losing flexibility. She hit her e flats flawlessly. often in pianissimo.
I don't know which singer in history was perfect live!! People who only listen to recordings make this type of comment. I can't remember a more compelling Lucia and even at these slower tempi she does a great job. This is a keeper and hopefully she will keep singing the rep that let's her emote without singing heavier. If this singer continues this type of singing she will be part of opera history. How wonderful to have a Non-Chirpy coloratura with a real understanding and preparation. Perfect!!?
Maybe Alfredo Kraus was the only one. He was absolutely secure vocally and emotionally, and handled eveything woth such ease..It's just a maybe...Even G. Simionato said he was the closest to perfection.
Hmmmm.... she does some beautiful things here, but I am surprised at the instability of her lower register; its like she cannot control anything below a middle c. She's laboring for sure. Perhaps it was an off night for her? I've heard her sound much more grounded. But then again, singing this scene live is bound to display all vocal quirks and holes. Wish the direction were better; Ms. Gutierrez needed some help from the director and wasn't getting much inspiration from the chorus.
Totally Agree with you, I guess she is Renata Screecho´s new obsession after it was Callas for almost 30 years. I hope Eglise will be a little more inteligent than what Renata Screecho was I also think she did it on purpose.
agreed; imperfect yet somehow very compelling! but i must also say that this is the first video i've watched of her that i've felt it... in all the previous ones i'd seen, it was just imperfect, not very compelling...
¡Fantástica Eglise!

Scotto her coach? Now we know where the lethargy, amateurism and lack of skill come from.

Eglise Gutiérrez is a protégé of Renata Scotto, with whom she studied this role. Scotto, too, was an imperfect but fascinating Lucia.

well maybe lucia is a role she worked the most on! Guess I'll have to listen to the other videos in order to understand what you mean..;)

The version with the flute duet. I thought it had gone out of fashion. Recent performances brought this with a glass harmonica.
