Right on! The Boss and the Queen! And to all you dumbasses who say Bruce can't sing, pick up the Albums Born to Run and Born in the USA, none better. Born in the USA ties with Thriller(gags) for most no. 1 singles of of one album, 7.
Bruce can sing, but you can tell he wrote this more for her voice than his own. His voice sucks on this. JJ always rocks the house. Just saw her last week and it was by far the best concert I've seen of hers... ever and I've seen a lot!!
The movie Light Of Day was originally called Born In The USA. Bruce was asked by Paul Schraeder to use the song Born In The USA in the film. Bruce thought it was inappropriate and wrote Light Of Day to be used in the film. Other posters are referring to Performance rights, what is really at issue here is publishing rights. For instance the songs written by Lennon McCartney were never owned by Lennon or McCartney. They were owned by a publishing company called Northern Songs
the hottest girl and the coolest dude doing a great rock tune together. the singing, the guitar work, the chemistry, terrific. what a treat, relax and enjoy regardless of who you prefer. They are both among the best of the best
Jeez she has screwed this - gotta take your hat off to Bruce - this is so slow he musta felt like he was accompanying his mother....Queen of Rock'n'Roll my candy ass...!!
@Homerlarascally like it or not she is the queen of rock and she is your queen and i have never seen \ heard of someone who hate Joan Jett or doubt her abilities before you crazy ass !
@cuteNADA1992 :~)))))))))))))))))))) not doubting her abilities - just saying she's naused up this version of a great song. Bruce musta sighed with relief when it was over - I know I did :)
All these years...I never would have thought Bruce had it in him. But I heard him do one solo on Vigilante Man and was impressed. This video confirms it for me...Bruce IS a good lead guitarist, he just holds back/leaves the job to others.
@Politcalamity Check out Bruce with Tom Morello playing 'Ghost of Tom Joad', or check out anything at all from '75..... The Boss is THE BOSS for a reason!
People on the Internet can suck the fun out of anything. Here's a video of two of the best artists music has to offer, playing together and having a blast, and all the commenters can do is argue about who owns what and which one should be more honored. Shut up and enjoy the video instead, would ya?
The part everyone is missing is: Bruce Springsteen did indeed write Light of Day for the movie Light of Day, however he sold the song to the movie and eventually to Joan Jett. He made a hell of alot of money for selling the song. So in the end it is an honor for him to sing the song he wrote with Joan Jett because he more then likely doesnt own the rights to the song anymore. Everyone needs to enjoy the music and chill out. Joan has alot of respect and love for Bruce thats all that should matter
@amazingbella23 I'm chill belive me. Wanted to clarify something though. It's not possible to sell a song to Jett. The songwriter can sell "performance rights." Songwriter maintains "copyright." Songwriter can take away future "performance rights." So the only reason Jett can sing this song is because bruce lets her.
Don't mean any disrespect to Jett. I enjoy this performance and so come back here. But I take umbrage at Jett lover's belittling the Boss for no reason. Enjoy the music!
@amazingbella23 also to clarify further. Song writer maintains the right to sell performance rights to as many people as s/he wishes. So anybody that bruce lets sing this song, can sing it. Jett cannot do anything with this song other than sing it.
Again, Jett is great. I like her. Let's enjoy the music.
@thefastshuffle I've heard of instances where songwriters have sold all the rights to the song to an artist and sat back and enjoyed the royalties of the song. I have no clue whether Bruce sold her the song or is just letting her use it *shrugs* everyone should just get along and respect both people because they both deserve it. So I agree lets just enjoy the music, its a wonderful song. :)
@amazingbella23 Quite wrong. Bruce owns the PUBLISHING rights to all his music. Look up ASCAP. The movie producers pay the royalties to Bruce, whatever amount was negotiated. Bruce has complete control of his music; otherwise he wouldn't have gone through his legal battles with Mike Appel, his former manager, to retain publishing rights. Anytime there's airplay of this song, Bruce gets some $. No difference with any other recording artist.
@ZLUGGO How the hell this would have been an honor for Bruce. He started his career before her and received critical and commercial success before her entry. He made legendary albums in his career and hailed as one of the greatest songwriter ever while Joan jett even didn't have a single song to compare to Bruce. With all respect its Joan's huge honor to share a stage with Bruce
@TheAlxxHydeShow I m Sorry!! Go and watch Bruce perform this with the band on the LIve in New York dvd, from the reunion tour (1999 thru 2001). When he is a guest or has people guest on his tours the one thing does not do is 'take over', if you see that as him being a weak singer, you've obviously never seen him live.
Wow, I'm a huge Bruce fan and he sounds terrible here. But you can tell he's not trying to steal the show here, unless he's trying something new and it's not working.
Yep!! Joan is just the BEST! While all these others (used to be hot hall of fame inductees) are in their rockers and only get on stage to flex their fame once in awhile, she is out there rock n' rollin', stayin' on top of her game! Say what?! Ya heard me!
Dude, where do you get off talking about Joan!!! She kicks ASS!!! I like Springsteen too, but you have no idea what the hell your talking about!!!! JOAN JETT KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!
How could you compare joan jett to the boss when it comes to singing and performing, bruce is in a leauge of his own and anybody who knows what music is would agree and how could you say its not the type of song that he should sing when he is the one who wrote it, you can only write something that you can sing! Bruce and the e street band perform this much better live then joan jett
How con you compare them like they are rivals? They seem to be friends to me. At the end of the vid he even said "Joan Jett is great". So is the boss so great he's not aloud to have friends. Sounds like what you are saying to me. That would lead to a lonely life that would end up in a Kurt Cobain kind of way.
Bruce is a great writer, I won't deny that. However, singing wise, Jett has a much stronger voice and makes him sound a little bad here. That said, it's just fun to watch these two share a stage.
From a fans perspective, this is what it's all about, watching awesome musicians giving respect to each other & working together vs. bands breaking up & cancelled tours due too big ego's & directional disagreements.
He ended up keeping "Cover Me" for himself so he gave her a song called "Protection". Hungry Heart was gonna go to the Ramones but Jon Landau advised against it.
I'd include "Because the Night" for Patti Smith. It was intended for "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (1978) but didn't make the cut - imagine the songs that *are* on that album.
Patti was recording in the same studio, heard the song and told Bruce how much she liked it. Bruce was, and is a big admirer of Patti & gave her the song to record, and something more important: Co-authorship, even though she made only minor wording changes. Bruce plays it live. Watch the 1978 version that's 7:28.
The Motley Crue/Joan Jett comparison to Bruce/Beatles -- I completely disagree. They both have their niches - I don't want to get into a thing - but personal preference is Joan for a lot of reasons that may be interpreted as a slam against Bruce and I don't want to do that.
@thefastshuffle Yes, you're right, it must have been such a drag for him, I know famous rock stars do shit they don't wanna do ALL the time, it's what being rich and famous is all about.
@brassknuckles77 Actually, it probably was a drag for him.
