Before the islamic invasion Spain had already achieved religious unity. Actually the first notion of Spain as a country comes with visegoth monarchy. Spain was part of the christianity before al-andalus. That explains how the goths could ask for help to the franks to start the reconquest of the country. That explains the RE in reconquista.

It was an iberian king who asked tariq ibn ziyad to free the Iberian peninsula from the barbaric visigoths. He even gave ships to tarig to transport his army from Morocco to the Iberian peninsula. visigoths were OCCUPIERS of the iberian peninsula.
