  • amazing

  • Played in one of Europe's finest cathedrals

  • Captivating to listen to this famous part of Matthew's Passion - for me one of Bach's most compelling pieces - played on pipe organ.

  • Sublime! Truly worth as a memento of Bach and to all inhabitant of this universe.

  • impressive sound! I don't quite understand how he gets so many tonal variations without any stop changes...

  • @john1801rambo I think it had been programmed for auto-variations or something.

  • @john1801rambo I think it was programmed for auto-change and 'modulating' the pipes

  • No - there is no "auto-change" facility on this instrument - see my answer to john1801rambo below ...

  • @john1801rambo - This is an instrument in the French romantic style like the organs of Cavaillé-Coll which can achieve major changes in dynamics without any (obvious) stop changes. All of the manuals are coupled down to the Grand Orgue and a very full registration including reeds and mixtures are drawn on each manual - the secret is that there are also devices known as "ventils" which allow the player to enable and disable certain blocks of stops on each manual ...

  • @john1801rambo ... so the player can control the reeds, mixtures and foundation stops with pedals or (in the case of this instrument) a row of knobs just under the music desk without touching any of the actual stop knobs. So, by manipulating the ventils, the pedal couplers and the (usually very effective) swell boxes the player can get lots of tonal variations.

  • @john1801rambo If you watch carefully at about 4:45 you will see him playing on a fairly soft registration on the third manual (the Recit) and reaching up under the music desk to add the reeds of the Grand Orgue (and possibly the Bombarde) before he returns to playing on the Grand Orgue at about 4:59

  • Grossartig ! Bravo ! Danke !

  • It this cavaille coll?

  • @HONGYOUNGEUN No, a Pierre Schyven organ 1891

  • love it, i really love it!

  • SUBLIME!

  • Erittäin kaunis urkukappale! (Very beautiful.....)

  • A rich sound but not really in line with my conception of Bach's finale.

  • Deze kerk heeft het allemaal. Een grote orgel en een grote organist.

    Gefeliciteerd, Antwerpen

  • Upean hieno ja kaunis! (Very beautiful)

  • Amazing instrument. I particularly love the Recit 2'. Exceptional

  • μπα παναθεμα σε μας κοψοχολιασες :P

  • It doesn't have to always be a Cavaillé-Coll

  • A glorious sound,

    brilliant tonalities,

    eternal perspectives.

    Glenn

  • It's a full barker organ so the pressure is independent the couplers.

The presure is always the same and not heavy.

Unfortunately, the organ speak a little bit delayed.

  • It is known as a tracker organ. The more coupling from manual to manual, the harder it is to press the keys. You need very strong hands to play with the organ fully coupled like it is here.

  • @allezach - what, no Barker levers?

  • One word: WOW!

  • Gorgeous.

  • Jesus Christ do you hear that bombarde at the last chord?

  • Why are the keys moving on the manuals which he is NOT playing ?

  • @peterpocasset ignoramus, does the word "couplers" not ring any bell?

  • @peterpocasset He has some of (or all) of the couplers activated, just like on a harpsichord, same function. When you press one key down, the other one is mechanically automatically depressed. Make sense?

  • Wonderful!

  • Phantastisch ! Großartig !!! Einfach göttlich !!!!

  • Sheet music : see Leontsky's website - partitions.

  • Unglaublich ! Wer "haut mich zuerst vom Hocker" :

Die Musik BACHs, das Spiel des Mannes am Manuale

oder diese großartige Orgel --- eingebettet in wunderbare

    Barock-Architektur ? AR / Berlin.

  • Impressive play that touches deeply, but the instrument sounds somewhat like a ennobled fair organ. It 's a thousend pities that the Antwerp cathedral government in that time has chosen for Schyven and not for Cavaillé-Coll !!

  • The instrument is fantastic but it seems tha it need better tuning specially in the uperwork. The music as oftenly happens with Widor is absolutly boring. Very good video anyway.

  • This was written by J.S. Bach and is the final to the Saint Matthew Passion, which is in my opinion Bach's absolute greatest work. This is not boring music and Charles-Marie Widor did not write it, he simply made an organ transcription.

  • @stylusfantasticus You can't blame Widor - it was Bach who wrote it! All he did was add a different ending to it really.

  • This organ is Belgium's answer to the great Cavaillé-Coll at St. Sulpice. Both are different, but each in its own way remarkable. Post more music played on this organ please!

  • That full lenght 32' Contrebombarde first C is something at the end isn't it ! Regardfull to all for the judicious comments on this video and Peter Van De Velde's remarquable interpretation let's not forget Widor was himself the one to inaugurate this organ in 1892, as he had in great admiration Schyven's work and organ.

  • Wow! I"ve been on his concert in Big Hall of Filarmonia today!!! I mean in St. Petersburg Filarmonia! That is Great!!

  • Wow! Super, Fantastic Work! Very great performance...

  • I just noticed that you can see the camera shake when you go for the 32'. That is FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • Wow! That was incredible, even after listening to it three times!!!

  • einfach große Klasse !!!!!!

  • Knap gedaan Peter...

  • exelente interpretacion y fabuloso sonido del rgano

  • This is a fabulous instrument capable of gorgeous textures and the most noble sounds from such venerable literature. The listener can drift away to some sublime state of mind when hearing these waves of heroic reeds voicing their majesty across the expanse of space. Van de Velde truly understands this music and performs with grand vision and comprehensive mastery of spirit. A very fine recording in an extraordinarily beautiful church. Excellent in every way!

  • Schyven was the Belgian Cavaillé-Coll. This is "maasterpiece" which I have been fortunate enough to hear in person and on two CD's.

  • I think there has been a re-edition by Butz-Verlag. Good Luck!

  • @apietrini: Yes it is. Durand, Paris or Bütz, Germany. I also have a pdf file.

  • @apietrini

Yes, it's edited by DURAND. If you haven't found it yet, feel free to send me a message and I'll help you out ;)

  • SPLENDIDE!!!!

  • Wonderful music!

  • Absolutely magnificent!

  • Thank you for sharing

  • It constantly amazes me how the interpretation of Bach's music has evolved (revolved?) For years now, we've been immmersed in the spare, baroque, original-instruments (E. Power Biggs-ish?) versions, & it tends to make us forget that, once upon a time, these lush, Romantic verisons were all the rage.

  • Its amazing! This organ sounds just like a Cavaille-Coll.

  • Awesome! That final chord was just mind blowing and Peter Van de Velde plays this instrument as well as Daniel Roth plays at St Sulpice. Magnificent 5 stars! More please :-)
