  • ive listened to most of your songs on here and love them all but this one is probably my favorite

  • @mastercueartist It's a favorite of mine too, even if I did write it myself.. hahaha. Thanks.

  • @rpeek sounds like an eerie ballad. i think it fits with the name.

  • @mastercueartist That's the picture that came to mind when I wrote it. The B part is the thunder, when it comes down hard on the 4th string..

  • @rpeek lol i hate myself for even asking this because it will make me hypocritical and you seem to come from the same type of background as me so im sure you understand why...but...you wouldnt have happened to put any words to this tune have you? the right lyrics could make this a very powerful song.

  • @mastercueartist I did. I wrote lyrics and sang them in church. They were quite confessional and my x wife made fun of me. Said it sounded like "Devil went down to Georgia" on the banjo or something, so I put them away and have never sung them again..

  • @rpeek i think you should sing them

  • @mastercueartist I went up in the attick and looked in the old banjo case that I took to Church that time, and found them, and brought them downstairs and sung them, just now, on camera and am uploading it now. I hope it dosen't suck.. hahaha. thanks.

  • very very nice...

  • Thank you for sharing rPeek!! Love it! The sound, the feel and especially the title.... Trying to work it out on the ol' six string by listening and tinkering...

    Thanks

    Mike

  • @ducksmith Let me know how that works out. I use some interesting tuning to get there. I suspect it'd be harder on a guitar.

  • @rpeek Yeah a little bit harder, but I got your tuning(thanks by the way) and am tabbing it out to pick out the notes that I am trying to translate to the song I am writing...chorus in fact is where I am looking for them to shine through. Not trying to copy it exactly just trying to get that feel. I will get it to ya via intergoogle web mail when I am done to see what ya think

  • @ducksmith Sounds like fun. Songs always take on the feel of the player. Have fun with it and I'll look forward to seeing how it turns out.

  • This is really pretty. :) I miss West Virginia. Reminds me of home.

  • Really enjoyed this video, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was an original song!

  • Just beautiful. I really enjoyed it, so much so that I shared it with the folks on my page on facebook in honor of the rain in my desert town today. Wonderful what a new tuning can give birth to!

  • @Saraslady7788 Thank You! Glad you enjoyed it and glad you shared it, and that it meant something to ya.. I appreciate that.

  • LOOVE IT!!!!

    ROOTS to the bones.

  • Thanks, great song. I suppose I had to change those strings sooner or later anyway.

  • Really like your original tune here. When i get my chops up I'm gonna try to let you "teach it to me"! thanks

  • Betcha. It's not really that hard to learn, the biggest part is in the tuning..

  • I must tell you this is my absolute favorite. It is such a raw, scratch-the-heart sound. I've never heard a banjo be picked quite like you do it, its phenominal. I'd like to thank you for truely making my day, and please keep posting!

The world needs more musicians like you!

  • Thank You!

  • thank you so much for posting this ... it reminds me of my childhood in the smokey mountains of western North Carolina ... walking up a hidden logging trail with my sisters ... an early spring rain catching us by surprise .. not enough to get ya wet, but enough to hear the sounds of the drops falling on leaves ... when I close my eyes and listen to this, I can almost smell that rain .... THANK YOU for the memories!

  • the afrians have a instrumet called a kora, check it out bud.reminds me of the old washtub bass system.makes me wonder if a quote"renaissanse man" like yaself could make a instrument like a stand up bass on one of those based loosly on the kora.bet it would sound yummy.lol.stumbled on ya vids.like them.keep them coming, from a goofy newfie.slan abahaile mo chara (thats irish 4 ,safe home my friend)

  • I've seen a kora played. Also seen a bass made out of an auto gas tank, and one made out of a cardboard box. I've got a washtub bass.. Thanks.

  • I really like that tuning, it suits the banjo very well.

  • Awesome ! :-)

But i can't find the song on YouTube.. Is it here, will you give me a link?

    Best regards

    Niklas

  • I made the song up. Don't think you'll find it anywhere else..

  • Hi cant believe what ive just listened to FANTASTIC thanks ZAK

  • Welcome Zak. Thanks for listening..

  • Awesome! Darn you...now I'm going to have to learn the banjo!!! ;-)

  • If Led Zepplin was still together, THEY would want a demo of that. It would make a perfect counter-style intro to Stairway to Heaven, or possibly a good fit for a mash-up.

  • Yea, it's one of my favorites.. Thanks.

  • I wonder how it would sound on the oil can banjo...

  • I 'spect similar but tin-ier.. haha

  • I dunno, the oil can seems to have a deeper, richer sound than the gas can. At least, that's what my ears tell me, for what that's worth.

  • I've noticed that each of them have their own personalities, just like banjos..... just like people.. I've got some more cans out in the shed, just waiting for me to bring them to life and give them a tune or two.. Can hardly wait.. There's so many things I want to do.... Hope I live long enough to do all of 'em.. haha

  • Well, if my prayers are heard, you will. This world needs more renaissance men like you to keep arts like this from disappearing. Keep on keepin' on, brother!

  • Thank You...

  • I've been checking out your playing for a while now. Great stuff! This one just pulls at the soul, haunting!

A while back i was thinking of converting a old tenor to 5 string, came across your videos and got inspired. And, well, I went and drilled a hole in the side of a perfectly good( but abandoned and unused) Clarophone tenor. In a couple of weeks, I should have it going and I'll let you know how she sounds. Thanks for the videos AND the inspiration. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

  • Yea, well I've butchered up a lot of tenors, but never yet been worry. They've always worked out well for me. I make a little 5th string bridge out of a little sliver of wood, and that's the trick part although I have seen a chunk of pretty ugly wood just slapped on and glued in place and had it work. Either way, it does what you want, and I like playing these short neck conversion banjos better than the long ones.. Shoot a vid of yours ..
