She sounds very good on records. But as Rosina, very early in her career, she was inaudible from Covent Garden Gallery. Josephine Veasey, in the small role of the maid sang her off the stage.
She deserves her place. Together with Horne, Berganza was the epitome of coloratura mezzo, with her distinctively warm and lush voice, whose way with the coloratura and phrasing always make me smile positively, for it always sounds genuine and deep from the heart.
I think naming 100 greatest singers is an impossible task, since the 20th century had so many great singers that were, in their fachs, of equal valour! Btw, where's Sayão, Sutherland, Verrett...?
I've never been a fan of hers. Something about her tone just rubbed me wrong from the first time I heard her. That said, she certainly can do wonders with her voice. I wouldn't include her on my personal 100, but for this list I'd say she's great as someone a little lower on the list.
I'm not one of Berganza's idolatrous fans. However, when I was growing up, she and Marilyn Horne were the two Rossini magicians among singers. I admire her musicianship as well as technical skill and charm. Deserves her place on the list.
A perfect singer in this repertoire where it is possible to agree that she the is number 1... but how can you compare her with Ferrier, Sutherland, Muzio, Ponselle, Caruso, Kozlowsky, Vickers, Kraus, Chaliapin? Every singer should be evaluated in his/her fach, so that there is no number 1 of all the singers!
Not only do I agree with Teresa Berganza to appear in the list of 100 greatest singers ever, also do I want to make the humble suggestion of putting her on the eternal 1st place!
O dear.

I would definitely rate Sutherland and Schwarzkopf way above this. As mezzos, Ludwig, Von Otter and Mathis are all better.

@swanningaround that's like the classic case of comparing champagne with cognac! Two COMPLETELY different repetoires!

@olympicfreak678 be careful with that comparison, someone can misquote it and we all know what happens when they do that
