This is a bad idea. I tried to post a link to a site that explains why. One reason is that composting does not kill all the pathogens in the poo. Search Snohomish County : Water Pollution : Pet Waste Disposal Methods for more info.
The whole point of composting pet waste is reducing waste ie flushing wastes water and energy. Throwing it away wastes energy to transport and dispose of the waste as well as it also is harmful.
Here it's illegal to put dog poo in your trash OR flush it. I have a septic system, but I've been told that it will damage my system. What exactly is stupid/liberal/can't handle living in the country about following the law and trying to find a way to handle my dog's doo?
I'm building one this weekend because it's either that, $5k septic bill, or let it sit in my yard (I have kids, so that's a no-go). I'm in Texas, by the way.
can we also compost our cat poo? we have a litter box and use wood stove pellets for litter which is also green. just wondering (and yes, JUST the poo, not the litter from the cats)
I am definetly going to to do the poop compost. It's an awesome idea. Thank you for posting. It's a shame to put such decomposable natural waste into plastic bags which last practically forever into landfills to make them even larger. A small hole in my backyard will take care of it in an environmentally friendly way. How far would you say to keep the hole away from veggies?
Thanks for the tip. I will dig a deeper pit to make sure. Unfortunately I live in small apartment like townhouses...so my backyard is quite small. I haven't planted a garden yet...but this spring I plan on making an elevated bed with fresh soil for veggies. Hopefully with a deep pit for dog waste and an elevated bed it will be ok. I'll only be here for 2-3 years.

Keep it as far away as possible. The waste will break down and flow into the subsoil so it should be deeper than most of your veggie roots.
