@satanidomini yes you're right, I think only a small nuumber really belive. I know a guy that went to a semenary because it's a career and he said he doesnt totally belive its just a cushy carreer for him.
I suspect that there are probably more passionate atheists in the Bible Belt, due to the fact that most atheists that I've met are fueled by the contrast of Christian fundamentalism. It only makes sense that the more Christian fundamentalists there are in a particular area, the more atheists there are going to be as well. Compare that to regions with liberal forms of spirituality, and the atheists are less motivated.
lmfao at the guy who said with no religion he would kill his neigbour!! Someone take him him to the hospital for a mental health check & i hope his neighbour has moved.
@LdnGirl89 The scary thing is , I actually KNOW a real person who's said much the same thing...He's an otherwise reasonable and intelligent guy, but he's convinced that without his belief in god, that he'd just go off the deep end and probably become a homicidal maniac. Sad but true.
@philster00700 Hitler was an admitted Catholic. He said that by fighting off the Jews he was doing the Lord's work. As for Stalin, he abolished religion because it was a competing power over the people. There's no evidence to suggest that he was an atheist. Even if they were, we do not generalize that a handful of tyrants who were religious makes all religion bad. Referencing two tyrants, who's religion was either announced or uncertain, does not make the statistic false.
@Storckperson First of all Hitler was Catholic as a CHILD, then learnt to reject religion. This therefore made him an ATHEIST. Secondly, Stalin adopted Lenin's view that religion was laying waste to society, THEREFORE MAKING HIM AN ATHEIST. I'm just trying to make a point; sure not all atheists are evil, but when you consider the most heinous crimes against humans in the past centuries, arguably history, then unfortunately they ARE atheists. Sorry to burst your bubble.
@philster00700 Hitler never denounced his Catholicism. His Nazi party programs called for "Positive Christianity." His regime was anything but atheist, Christianity would continue to be the religion of the German people. As for Stalin he was motivated by his dogmatic Marxism, not atheism. It was his drive for power and social change, not his disbelief in God.
among many reasons, the basis point is that "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" doesnt include building many [Russian] workers homes without heat while enriching the party/bureaucracy leaders or killing and starving millions of people
the stalinist system was a class dictatorship in which the upper party members, managers, and bureaucrats exploited the workers
@Daniel0112358 I completely agree with you. I didn't mean to suggest he wasn't a Marxist. Stalin was a monster, but as you said, he exploited the people with an economic system, not atheism, which was my greater point. :)
@Daniel0112358 Again, agree with you, haha. I did some more research after I posted my uncertainty about his atheism to discover (or rather reaffirm) what you just said.
I think the Religious leaders of this world are enirely smarter than we would love to believe. Religion is a TAX-FREE.. MULTI-BILLION Dollar a year industry. The Vatican who I believe know most of the truths, and the Evangelicals who have people so afraid of God that they send them money. ALOT OF MONEY! Anyone see the Evangelist who sells the 5,000 seed? Claiming a rich harvest if you give him 5,000 bucks. He's histerical!
I like hearing Dr Dawkins debate and talk ab out religion, but I absolutely love hearing him talk about science. He seems so enthralled by it all that it's hard not to feel the same way. I always get that feeling when I think about the cosmos. Reality is so much more beautiful than myth.
As a citizen of the Bible Belt, born and bred, I must agree that there are LOTS of us who have had to maintain our silence for fear of physical retribution. The stupid and religious might not be that clever, but they outnumber those of us who actually can and do think about 8 to 1.
Thank you, Dr. Dawkins. You are much needed in this world.
I have read the argument that 'the smart/powerful people' push religion to keep the lower classes down by Marcus Ciciero. He died in 43 BC. I enourage everyone to read 'On the Nature of the Gods'. He was a BRILLIANT thinker and writer. These arguments are all old. Atheism is older than monotheism.
This was a wonderful series to listen to. Thank you for posting it. Penn and Dawkins talking together. I would love to see them both in person. I would have loved to see Dr. Dawkins dispose of each of those Liberty "University" students.
One interesting thing that was mentioned regarding certain people at the talks around the US being so grateful that someone was speaking out against religion & saying things that they had wanted to for years. When religion takes hold it means to aggressively control society & take away freedom of though. There are places in the US where atheist have to keep quiet otherwise they lose their job, get ostracised & worse. This's why there has to be a fightback against this oppressive control.
I remember a few weeks ago Diane Sawyer did a story about of all people, preachers in the bible belt who had become atheists after reading people like Dawkins and Hitchens books but still preaching because they had no other income.
Rather than praying to pass and do well on a test, an atheist like myself would know the only way to do well is actually study the material. Praying would only waste time and hope.
"the atheists didn't cheat because they were so smart they could pass the test anyway" is a rather self-serving statement. Some of my fellow atheists are dumb as door nails whereas the couple of christians I know are smarter than even the smartest of atheists I know, not including me of course :)
After watching the entire interview, Mr. Penn, you've gained a life-long friend in Miam Beach. Write me here and come on down. We'll treat you like the king among men you are. We have a great band. We'll "eat, drink and be merry." Ha.
i am disgusted with you Richard Dawkins and Penn Jillette, vile creatures and fools!
