No, in the Pushkin, she left him alone in the room with all his emotions. Then her husband comes in and we don't know what happens next. I assume the opera ends where she left and before her husband comes in.
Looks like there was only one camera, which sit very far from the stage. Hampson might be a good singer, but he is not Onegin. He was off pitch several times, and his acting was off too. If you think this is passion, go and see the clip on Youtube with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Fleming in Met production this March.
He's a fascinating Onegin. When I saw him live he got "carried away" in the last scene too...but I couldn't care less! He was brilliant, I cried my eyes out!
I agree with you. I love Hampson, but if you want to hear a good Onegin, go to Hvorostovsky. The Met production with Hvorostovsky and Fleming is my absolute favorite opera production period.
I think Hampson was very good Rodrigo but Onegin in this producion, his russsian was nou good, the very best in this producion was Sergei Larin als Lenski bravo.
I saw Thomas Hampson as Onegin in Vienna and it was one of the most heartbreaking performances I have ever seen. Thanks so much for this clip! Is there ANY chance for more? Any at all? I'd give anything to see more of this!
OH...*Sigh* I could NOT agree more! Hampson in this role totally rocks my world. What passion, what melancholy, what art! If you possibly have *any* more of this *please* share! I'll be forever indebted to you if you do. ;-)
The late and much lamented Susan Chilcott was a fine singer; but I have never heard Hampson so off-pitch in the middle section of the scene as here. I think he got carried away with the drama.
I quite agree with you on Thomas' singing here (a pity!)... Still, I saw the performance live and I do not think it was that "off-pitched" (this video is the last rehearsal, the "répétition généraleé). But I would add that I don't think russian suits his voice so well to my taste...
Stage direction is weired. Onegin sees Tanya's husband and continues to pursue her? And did he commit suicide at the end?

Actually, in the Pushkin, the Gremin does appear at the end of the scene and she goes off to him.

It's true he gets carried away with the drama, but NOT to the detriment of his vioce, didn't find it off-pitched at all. What a passionate Onegin!
