You're right, it's all stereotype. Tom Hanks' southern accent as "Forrest Gump" sure couldn't pass among anyone who grew up hearing a native southern accent. However, Jessica Tandy deserves a gold star for her accent in "Driving Miss Daisy" (and she grew up in England!). She sounded as much a native southerner as anyone at a Southern Baptist potluck dinner (and for most southerners, dinner is served at noon; supper is the evening meal). Hollywood & TV has and always will portray us as buffoons.
