Luther sure wasn't the saint portrayed in this tune but it's still very educational. I mean, it's perfectly fine to not talk about what a selfish and stubborn asshole he actually was when describing how he started his reformation. Come on, no adult needs a song like this to learn about something, it's clearly meant for children, therefore you did an awesome job making this video. Only that German sentece was kinda fucked up but hey, nice touch!
Many commendations, History Teachers! What an inovative way to get students interrested in history. Would love to see you do one on the Albigensian Crusade.
OK, so my computer teacher is totally unfair so I'm being as one girl put it the "Martin Luther of our class" LOL Im not finished but its gonna be like the [insert #ofclaims] sentiments. i already have offers of reproduction. Please like!
I love your videos! Maybe because I was a history *and* a religious studies major. No US history at all for me! Anyway, you really need to do a video about St. Augustine: his early wanton life, he flirtation with Manicheanism, his concept of original sin (blame the woman for his lust), his confessions, being killed by barbarians. So much there!
I'm confused... At university the professor says that the whole nailing at the cathedral door was a myth, mostly because Luther's objections were in Latin and the common people couldn't read them. The direct impact thus would have been very small, supposing that he DID nail his objections to Wittenberg Cathedral . What do you think about it? (excuse me for my bad English, I'm Dutch)
@zorc2000 : I'm a german student of protestant theology (StudTheol), and as far as I know there are different opinions about this ... some professors think they were nailed and mailed, some that they've been only mailed ...
There are people from that period of time that claimed he would have nailed them at the door, but it is not sure, whether they spoke the truth or not ...
@zorc2000 I'm not sure what language the Theses were written in but Luther's Theses gained publicity after one his students took it from wherever it was posted, published it and distributed them throughout Germany and Europe.
Had the day off and was enjoying a "Bangles' afternoon on YouTube. I got to Manic Monday and thought there was something wrong. I have been enjoying your song so much I forgot what the original words were. I was listening to the first verse and thinking the lyrics are rhyming but it sounds odd. hmm
I've shown this video to several friends. They all say the trio is wonderful. Then I tell them the trio is 1 special lady. "NO!" They say, "I can count! See? 1,2,3! THREE singers." About the 4th time they watch it, they usually gasp and say something like "Well I'll be hornswaggled!" Then they ask "How does she do it?" - befuddled. So I tell them you're an advanced alien life form, who can shapeshift, that's been sent to help Earth. They just won't buy the "Mr.H's computer effects" story! Hah!
@rocketfuel414 ya, my teacher has crappy handwriting and I was really confused, luckily I have this magical thing called a textbook which set me straight :) thanks, though.
We listened to all the songs you guys have about the rennaissance (gutenberg, henry VIII, etc) today in my global class today to study for a test tomorrow xD
I love these songs, theyre so catchy :D and they actually help memorize the information :D
Now, one song the "Great Trio" could use in their efforts to educate us under the guise of entertainment, is "Stop! In the Name of Love!" (Supremes). Of course, I have no idea what the historical event could be! (This makes suggesting some lyrics difficult!) Of course, these Trio songs are always 3 times harder for Mrs.B. to sing!!!
Luther did not have any desire to form the "Lutheran" Church only to reform the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church was open to his ideas it is possible they could have made him a Saint. Unfortunately the Catholic Church has always been blind to pressing issues of the day and slow to change from the Reformation, to science with Gallieo, to stem cell research and clerical abuse today.
@rdsanchez1966 Yes, you're right. Many others shared similar fates to Luther in their efforts to improve things. Take Copernicus, for example. [I think the teachers cover him in one of their videos. It is easier to see the list of their videos on their Youtube Channel home page. Just click on their name in blue.] Religions tend to be very conservative and resistant to change. But, I think the teachers were reasonably "fair" with this song. But then historians are supposed to be impartial!
1) At 2:25 you say he's no longer a catholic priest. While he was no longer in union with the bishop of Rome (which is necessary to be a Roman Catholic priest), he was still a catholic priest. Roman Catholic theology agrees with the faith of the whole catholic faith that the priesthood is forever, even if you are banned from exercising its office.
2) Song idea: "I'm Joe Stalin" from Elton John's "I'm Still Standin'"
Now, this is either a brilliant suggestion on my part, or I will be in more trouble than Luther was... But here's a song suggestion: School's Out - Alice Cooper.... Topic? I dunno. Russian Revolution, maybe. Clearly a song about an ending/a beginning. James Watt (the ending of man-power & the beginning of steam power)?
I really do appreciate all the work that you are doing through making these videos, but I don't want to be too nitpicky, yet I felt that you mainly looked at Martin Luther from an optimistic point of view and did not talk about how anti-semitic and corrupt he was. Sorry if it seems like I am complaining, I love your videos, it would be interesting if you could make one on the Thirty Years War.
@jaskarandhaliwal1 Martin Luther may have been anti-Semitic by today's standards, but back then if you weren't Anti-Semitic you basically weren't Christian. And his whole point was how corrupt the Catholic church was, and their corruption was indeed absurd, going way too far. So he could never compare to them.
@jaskarandhaliwal1 omg, a thirty years war one would be gold. it'd need to be to a veryyy long song haha. or at least one that's particularly "epic". bohemian rhapsody perhaps?
@jaskarandhaliwal1 dude martin luther was awesome, can't deny it :) and he was only anti-semitic at the end of his life, when he sort of lost his mind (think about it, this guy risked the pyre, plus he was in terrible health) All the horrible things he said on Jews were obviously incompatible with the rest of his message.
@jaskarandhaliwal1 I like the sentiment. I think we do need to fight religious corruption much in the way our Founding Fathers (of the USA) began it. They were mostly Deists because there was less overwhelming evidence to the tip the scales... but with the benefit of what we know today, I'm sure they would all be solid Atheists.
@jaskarandhaliwal1 why don't u create one? This is what he was known for, w/o him ALL OF PROTESTANT CHRISTIANITY WOULD NOT EXIST. Yes, of course i know about his anti-Semitic views. He was definitely a trailblazer and of course, many didn't like him. HE ROCKED THE BOAT..AND TIPPED IT OVER! ;)...
Absolutely love it, this, French revolution, Constantine and Thomas Aquinas are my favs but I love all of them, I've only ever seen Joseph Fiennes in Enemy at the Gates when he played Commissar Danilov, luther looks cool
I never heard Manic Monday before, so I looked it up, I also looked up "come on eileen" and after watching them, the covers you guys do are way better than the originals :D
So... Who gets sung about when you do Walk Like an Egyptian? (Napoleon did invade Egypt...) But there is also General Gordon, Rommel, and a host of others...) Great job Trio! The songs could be used as mnemonics by students. Would they remember more? It would make a fascinating experiment....
@joshuacoleman2010 They sure do...and I have ex-students from 2-3 years ago who still remember the lyrics. A lot of students who have discovered these on YouTube write me that certain songs have helped them ace tests - even AP ones!
did this help your students do better on the tests or quizzes? I am a college student i just wondering. I really like the videos you made u did a wonderful job on it. I wishes my high school did this it better and it break it down easier to take in better.

Well, what a way to teach the story. Since I am in media at a new mission start I will be showing it to the entire church as part of my reformation message, not just a Bible class or to the Confirmation kids. Ah the joy of doing something outside the box!
A couple of people asked me what wasn't accurate.
