@iwantwatermellon Definitely Persuasion; it's my favorite. All of her books are excellent, but Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are for me a tie for 'next most interesting' after Persuasion. Then I would say Northanger Abbey, then Mansfield Park, then Emma.
If they had cast Keira Knightley, just 2 years after her version of P+P, some might have got real confused as to whether they were watching a movie based on an Austen novel, or a movie based on Austen's life.
And as good as Knightley is, she might just play Jane Austen exactly the way she played Lizzie. But Jane is not as impetuous as Lizzie - Jane Austen has to be played as a mature but passionate young lady. I thought Anne nailed it. And not being Brit, I can't comment on the accent.
Pride & prejudice is a wonderful book and so is the movie with Keira Knightley. The rain scene ... wow. Even better is a 1995 BBC adaptation with Colin Firth.
@iwantwatermellon I recommend Pride & Prejudice. Honestly, I really recommend Pride & Prejudice and Zombies. I'm 27, I read it and it was very good. It is still Jane Austen's work but there is the additional background of zombies roaming England. No need to be intimidated, you will love it and understand it.
@iwantwatermellon yes, pride and prejudice is definitely a good way to start. jane austen herself described it as "rather too light & bright & sparkling", but it offers an intresting perspective into what life was like then, without being too confusing or at all overbearing. the classic, complicated romance will sort of get you in the proper mood to want to read more.
Obrigada.
Anne did a wonderful job of portraying Jane Austen. Of all those that were considered for the role, she was the best choice. Her and James McAvoy, both very good actors, had a wonderful onscreen chemistry that made the story of Jane and Tom truly come to life and such a joy to watch.
What is wrong with you people? James himself praised her acting and said she portrayed Austen brilliantly. Her accent was well enough and I'm glad that Anne was chosen for this role not Keira.
That was an extremely good question. However, there is so much red tape in Hollywood. I have looked for work in film, and it is extremely tough to find. It seems only a small group of people will ever get to work full time in that field. Getting a BA in acting, for example, actually gives no one any real advantage, either, in spite of what the campus professors might tell us.
Notice that we cannot find auditions for any real film? That is because casting directors already decide "early."
The strange thing about this is the Hollywood Bosses feel Americans would not accept a 'Foreign' actress in one of their films, is it me or is that totally insulting the good American people!?
Also the commentator say's she spent a whole month in London perfecting the role, a month! wow that' a real long time to learn an accent and get into the role.... Not!
Hollywood stop insulting the inteligence of your audience and give us Actors and actresses that are at least believeable in their roles!

That's true, I'm not even British and yet there's something about Jane Austen that IS so British, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with her being played by an American!
Accents are very difficult to perform. I think that she played Miss Austen very well. She tried her best and I'm sure a lot of people can understand that. As well as the fact that there have been, quite frankly painful impressions of either the cockney or an aristocratic British accent from American actors and television shows. So I am glad that everyone tried their best in this film to make it more realistic, especially to the times.
I agree that Hathaway wasn't the best choice for Jane, but Keira Knightly as Lizzie was a bad choice, too, since Lizzie isn't supposed to be beautiful.
its ok for them to pick a beautiful lizzie just as long as jane would be prettier and thats what happened with pride and prejudice with keira knightly.
she was supposed to be the second most beautiful lady in Hertfordshire, after Jane! It was Miss Bingley and at first DArcy's view of her inferiority that made her seem unatractive. further, lizzie was thinner than jane (when jane and lizzie run to the father for news about Lydia toward the end in the text)
i was worried she would kill this movie just like Kiera Knightley did to Pride and Prejudice(It was a good movie, sure, but it screwed with the book!)but she feels the same way about Austen that I do! Reading Jane is like hearing from a friend!!
i agree. i dont' know, there's something about Keira Knightley that bugs me. but I think Anne did a decent job. she also had reason to take the part. wansn't she a lit major or something in university and actually did reports on Jane Austen? so i've heard
I think Anne did okay on the accent, although it sounded corny every once in awhile. But ehm, yeah.. they obviously picked her for a reason, and I will say this, there was unbelieveable chemistry between James and Anne, which made me like the movie. ;o;
Personally, I dislike this movie, it has some wit but, the lack of morality is something even Jane Austen would have been shocked at. And it should not be a mockery of the period, sic Anne Hathaway playing Jane, although I quite agree w/ the title, she only ever "tried" to become Jane we must look elswhere for the real Jane Austen.
I would've let it slip if the woman playing Jane Austen wasn't Anne Hathaway. I don't dislike her, but I always think of the kid with big bushy hair and eyebrows in Princess Diaries.
I think they should've cast an unknown actress for the part.
I'm not English/British but I do think Jane Austen should have been played by a British actress even though I think Anne Hathaway is a sweet person and great actress. The same way I think anyone would feel...
Anne was picked because she was the best to portray her from what the directors and casting thought! She took lessons in speaking, playing cricket, dancing, bowing, etc and totally immersed herself in the role of Jane Austen. From the Directors commentary on the DVD, Anne was what they were looking for. And on this same note, there are several British actors who portray Americans and WE don't complain about it! Anne, You were fantastic! thanks for your hard work!
OMG, I loved this movie so much. James Macavoy and Anne Hathaway have SO MUCH chemistry. They better come in another movie so I can see a happy ending!!!!
