My teacher is a former student of Sensei Gagne, my teacher has suffered a sprained ankle after a punch to the chest from this man. Its my belief that poor foundation makes everything else weak, so would a man with bad stances be able to inflict damage like that on a 300 lb man such as my instructor? I think not, until you train with this man you should keep your opinions of his ability to yourself.
Thanks for presenting this kata. I remember learning this back in 1979 from Sensei Fred Sypher a good friend of Sensei Coffman. The kata technically looks the same as i was taught. We later learned subtle ways to position the forearm, wrist & hand to inflict maximum damage while blocking. Fred Sypher was also a student of Hohan Soken & Fusei Kise. I appreciate all Sensei Sypher has taught me over that time period. Please keep those Kata video's coming.
So were you trained by the almight Greg Lazarus or one of his minions? I was trained by Sensei James H. Coffman. Why don't you tell him personally that his instruction sucks. My stance, foot positioning and performance is street applicable and correct. I have also successfully defended myself twice against 2 inmates at different times. How many inmates have you fought against and won. I'm not a bad ass but what I do, I do very well. Good luck and keep training. You need it.
If you are referring to me I can’t see where I criticized you personally. I am fairly certain I never used a pronoun other than “I” or “we”. My comments are about my thoughts and understanding only. You, like anyone else, are free to complain, degrade, and criticize all you like. We all display honor to varying degrees i guess. I will continue to honor Shihan Lazarus for the time, effort, and dedication he has to sharing this art with me and countless others.
I am one of Sensei Coffman's senior students. I tested Greg Lazarus for his sho dan test when he started his karate training in New Hampshire under Deus Machacos. Deus is a black belt student of mine. I busted Greg's nose twice during his first 2 attempts for sho dan, which he failed. He finally was promoted on his 3rd test. Greg couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag. Get the real history of Greg before you criticize me. Greg bought his way to 8th dan not earned it.
I am a student in the OSMKKF beneath Master Kise and Greg Lazarus. I guess I dont understand the shot at Shihan Lazarus. I found him to be a very down to earth guy and quite caring regarding his students. And regarding the critiques of the kata shown here....until I hold the same rank, I will hold off on bad mouthing higher ranking form. One of the first things we learn in our dojo is humility and we work under the asumption that people with higher rank know more than we do.
@jeterisagirl I can heartily agree with you. Anyone who criticizes someone else should understand that a big part of Shorin-Ryu is respect and courtesy. I find an almost complete lack of both in these posts. It is a shame that people believe that they should comment while forgetting to show humility and proper respect for someone who is clearly dedicated to keeping his art alive.
To Crimson. Are you a student of Greg Lazarus? You sound like you are conceitedly perfect as he. Thanks for your wisdom and critique. Oss, oh wise and perfect master.
I am a practitioner of Shorin-ryu, and regardless of differences in styles, he lacked any power or intensity and personally think he doesn't deserve his rank.
This appears to be Hohan Soken's Orthodox Seito-do. Just some questions, if (Roku-Dan) why 7th degree belt/some of your video's say "Shornji-ryu", and have Kata not listed as Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Orthodox Seito-do lineage?
@matiasgibert matsumura katas tend to have more upright stances and fast hand movements, its also easier to fire off kicks in this stances, this style also incorporates in different katas, more lower stances and body torque in its shorinji techniques.
@causticapocolypse im a shorin ryu practitioner from over 20 years, so i know that shorin has upright stances.... but i dont see any good stances here... and i dont see the kime that a rokudan sensei must have...
Lady, you are 27 years old. I was in Japan training when you were -18 years old and have continued ever since. Tell me, who do you think has the best vantage point?
@IEKUKATAKA but japanese karate seems well known for its watered down traditions and ineffective and untested techniques against styles outside of japan. this doesnt seem to be the consensus with okinawan karate though. and i may not be as old as you, but like bobbyjenkins said ''Old does not mean wise''.
Just because he's not in the air doing scissor kicks, it doesn't make him unworthy of his belt. I have been training in this style for 13 years. It is not the flashiest style in the world but it is very effective. That kata was done very well.
This is the way soken sensei did his kata this sensei is part of Sensei Coffman soken's first amrican student 1961 and sensei coffman has NOT CHANGED one thing.Great post THANK YOU
We do one similar..except after the 4 cat foot stances we go into to two different knee scrape/foot stomps with a kick and reverse punch after each. Then a reinforced ude uki..then followed by the zenkusedachis and aze uki's

Looks like he knows what he is doing, more traditional high stances and so on....
But I must say looks like the intensity of the Kata was laking. And yes this style is my favorite style ( Realistic )

Somehow that belt and that performance do not correlate.
