I just upgraded 10.10 to 11.04 beta and I'm getting this exact problem (on an ATI 4850.) Any known fixes or temporary alternate settings? I just begun "researching" this so forgive my ignorance.
@daniellaurine For the moment use gdm. Go to the top right of the screen and click the mouse to open the log-off menu, log off, then at the login screen choose your user then "Ubuntu Classic" from the drop-down menu at the bottom centre of the screen before entering your password. You'll get Gnome 2 Desktop Manager instead of Unity, which works fine with Compiz. Update often and keep an eye on the bug report, once it's closed try Unity again.
