I've had horses do that. Once, one hesitated 4 or 5 times then suddenly lunged over just like your mule did. It was a very dangerous creek about 4 inches wide, and maybe 2 inches deep. We went right into a fir tree on the other side, crashing branches as we went. Funny happening, but idiot horse.

Mules gather themselves so quietly, you can't feel it coming!! A horse will arch its back and prepare differently...you can feel a horse preparing to jump!! A mule can spring like a deer!! Mules can actually jump better than horses. That's why they stopped letting mules compete in jumpers. We do have an old sport down south called 'coon jumping' that involves dismounting, getting the mule (or horse) to jump a fence, and then remounting (all withing the bounds of a marked box). Comes from coon hunting at night when visibility is less than optional. I'm surprised that the rider stayed on the mule given the rider's seat.

Haha don't you just love it when you decide to do this. My mule Toby refused do walk through a tiny creek. I worked with him for an hour but he still had a skip in his step by the end haha.
