@a55b47 : One of the days between the 20. and 23. of November 1998 I came into the Notre Dame Cathedral just when the people were leaving. The organist was playing a piece which seemed as if heaven and hell were meeting.
@a55b47: If you say you document every recording made on this instrument, how could I know if one piece I heard one of the days between the 20th and the 23rd of November of 1998 in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was ever recorded? I came into the church when the people were leaving church and the organist was playing a piece which for me was and is the best I've ever heard on earth. It was like heaven and hell were meeting.
Is there a possibility to know what piece it was?
I don't think I ever said I've documented every recording. I think I probably said (& I can't track the thread) that I've heard about every recording ever produced commercially of Pierre Cochereau. Francois Carbou recorded (I think) almost everything Cochereau played @ ND de Paris, but most of it (again, I think) was never released commercially. I don't know whether he (or anyone else) has performed the same function for Latry/Lefebvre/Leguay, one of whom would have probably been playing in 1998
I think it was Albert Schweitzer who said of this instrument 'On the day of judgement this organ will play the Gloria' although I may be wrong! :-) Cavaillé-Coll said this was his favourite too.
Charlin also recorded a CD of Cochereau playing St Martin works, I will put some videos up of those pieces in due course.
Thanks for uploading this, played a bit too slow for my liking, Latry's version is better IMHO. I shall dig out the CD and post it soon.
There's also a version floating around YouTube by Philippe Delacour that I like. As I recall, it's on the big organ in Metz -- or maybe Luxembourg. In either event, they're instruments I'd never heard before the advent of YouTube. This device is really widening my musical horizons ;-)
Thanks JF Snail, I in fact knew for Cavaillé-Coll and Notre-Dame, that was his own favourite, that I nicknamed his "beautiful Frankenstein" lol (with all those mutations, for instance!) If you want to actually hear that Gloria, just get the one from la "Messe Solennelle" of Vierne with Cochereau and la Maîtrise de ND !! (you maybe know or have this recording on FY, recorded in 1978) And effectively Latry's version of l'Hymne au Soleil is possibly the best one recorded.
Folks just listen to the full organ of Notre-Dame at the end of this piece, this IS exactly what it always meant to me as the greatest of all organs ! JW
The organ Philippe Delacour plays on Youtube is the large recently enlarged one in Dudelange, Luxembourg; the American organist Robert Delcamp has done a nice St-Saens CD there on Naxos, amongst others. JW
The recordings were done in 1967 !! (both "Charlin" LP's !) I have them in CD reissue from the 90's. Moreau's playing is not perfect but is done with both passion and suaveness, maybe even more in Tournemire for me. JW
That's the trouble with those old LP's... they gave you almost no information about when something was recorded -- or anything else, for that matter. I bought the LP, as I recall, when I was in Paris in '84, & I think it had a 1983 copyright date. I don't remember the label. But I ditched the album after I transferred it to CD, so I don't have any reference point. I wasn't aware it was re-issued on CD, but what the hell?
On the two reissued CD's, it says "P:1967" (production, as it may sound in fact... more likewise than 1983 I believe, Charlin having been landmark in artistic French Stereo recordings in the sixties) and "C:1996" (copyright for CD) plus "made in France", obviously... there we go ! lol Thanks again, JW
This performance is riddled with error after error! I would never have allowed myself to be recorded like this...or play in public for that matter!

Well, it might have been an improvisation . . . it is hard to say . . .

Ah, the Chamades sound so beautiful!

The beginning of this reminds me very much of Tournemire's writing. What a shattering climax on this organ! Powerful stuff.

Well more evidence that I prefer this organ pre-1989 restoration! Excellent quality recording, and nice to hear Moreau play!

Thanks for your info on Pierre Moreau !

Moreau made *two* recordings at Notre-Dame: one Vierne, one Tournemire.
