Stevie's songs tended to go long. Her songs could run 5-6 minutes when you only had so much room on an album. The edit on the '97 version was terrific.
This version contains anger implied in the lyrics that is not heard on the highly polished single version. As written, Silver Springs has a versatility in the sense that it can literally be "read" in disparate ways. When blended with McVies' and Buckingham's harmonies and a distinctly reflective ambiance, (as on the single) it's message becomes wistful. I think this song is a clear example of Ms. Nicks' unique lyrical skill reflected as good art. Thank you for posting it.
@casacooper No... this is unreleased... The B-Side is 4:30ish in length and has backing vocals and the lyrics "I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you... You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you"
I found a 12" 45RPM single for Go Your Own Way with the B-Side Silver Springs for $4.99 at a record shop in Winston-Salem, NC... look around before spending that much.. unless it's the 7" single of Go Your Own Way in mint condition unopened lol
They always talk about how they threw a bunch of the tapes out during the Rumours recording sessions and kept only certain elements of the songs and started over again..... probably dumpster divers got a hold of this particular tape... who knows....

@1hardwired1 Almanac was a fan made demo set compiled of various demos and outtakes from the late 70s... They put live audience cheers at the end of songs to make some sound live... the demo of Storms on there is actually multi recordings of the song put together to sound like one long demo. The version of Silver Springs on Almanac is the 45RPM version from the Go Your Own Way single...
@JeremyRemixes Actually it has it listed as the Piano Demo on a website I just checked... I remember it being the 45 version.. anyways..if it's the piano one then it is the first recording of the song and it does have the "I'll follow you down...etc" lyrics.. not sure why it isn't on this version but this is the first band demo of the song more than likely.. the finalized band version appears on the single of GYOW and on FM's box set, the re-issue of Rumours and Stevie's Crystal Visions
I agree this is probably the version Stevie recorded from Rumours. At over 6 minutes long I can see how time constraints played into it, plus there are no backing vocals from Lindsey or Christine which makes it sound more like a solo recording, which may have played into Mick's and Lindsey's decision. I'd imagine the "I'll follow you down..." line was improvised as time went on, like other Stevie classics such as Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman.
Great song. Second only to the Dance version imo.
Stevie Nicks was robbed by Mick Fleetwood not allowing this song on Rumors years ago. There is no wonder Stevie had to go out on her own. Her music was stifled until she embarked on her own career. Thank Goodness she did!
i like it better without the "follow you down and haunt you" lines. seems more like resignation this way, which is what the song seems to be about. just accepting what is.
I gotta admit, this is a great version... but it's missing the verse "You will never get away from the sound of the woman who loves you." That pretty much concludes the song, and I was looking forward to hearing her belt it out man... but NO! 2.5/5
It seems they have a love/hate relationship. You can see the hurt in both their eyes. There is definately something there but they couldnt meet in the middle to keep the fire alive...?
Stevie is just one of the best singers/ song writers Ever!!!! Her voice is so unique. As soon as you hear one line, you know it's her. I have been a fan since I was a kid & I first heard her singing "Dreams". You can feel the passion in her voice. As a whole, the group is great, but all of my favorite songs by far are those she sings lead on.
@kells881 Yes! IMO Stevie made Fleetwood Mac the supergroup it is today. WIthout her, they likely would have continued to have moderate success, and may have occassionally had a big hit here or there (Christine's songs were getting really good in mid '70s; LB's talents would have helped them a lot). But it was Stevie's songs and her personal "presence" that lit FM on fire. She was the focal point for them on stage - a rock goddess that was beautiful, talented, mysterious, passionate, - a STAR!
I don't think Stevie ever Fell "out od love" with Lindsey or he with her...I think Stevie got sick of Lindsey's BS... Love this version of the song!!!
@foxypong Agreed. Even a stranger can see what a domineering and cotrolling man Lindsey Buckingham is (watch the Tusk video at Dodger Stadium where Lindsey tugs at Stevie's dress, trying to get her to sit down, while she is excitedly cheering on the USC Marching Band as they enter; Nicks is a rock superstar & he is treating her like a child).
@redletter2008 - well, we don't know exactly why he reached to tug at her, BUT, if what you say is true, she should have turned around and belted him with her hat...lol
@WitchyWonder Maybe he thought she was blocking the camera's view of HIM? I mean, Tusk was HIS song and Tusk was HIS album and here is that girl - again - hogging the spotlight. Never mind that Tusk would likely have sold less than 100,000 copies if Nicks were not on it (albeit quite limited). Buckingham is being as controlling in the video as he was with Nicks when they were together and when they were in the studio. Later on the Tusk tour, Lindsey would mock then kick Nicks, on stage no less!
@redletter2008 In my humble opinion, Stevie IS Fleetwood Mac...of course we know the other members are quite talented in their own right and they were magnificent together as a musical group, however, Stevie was what brought that group into the spotlight. I adore her. I am a 46 year old woman & proud to say that I love her talent, her poetry, her voice & her presence. She is my all time favorite female rock artist EVER. Her words are written from the heart and the soul. Lindsey was an ass.
@WitchyWonder Hey - I am 44 (great growing up in '70s/'80s with Fleetwood Mac and then Stevie's solo music!). If Nicks were not in Fleetwood Mac, they would not have interested me one bit. I discovered Christine's wonderful talents/songs because I was listening to hear Stevie on her songs. That is one of the reasons that I don't like Lindsey so much. Yes, he is an awesome guitarist (one of the best), and has some good songs, but his refusal to incorporate Nicks into his music was just stupid.
@redletter2008 I love Christine but her style is much different than Stevie's. I appreciate her work & understand her wanting to leave the group dynamics, aka - drama. I agree that Lindsey is a brilliant guitarist, but I just can't get into his stuff as a solo artist, maybe because I'm Stevie biased...lol. It seems that they've gotten to a place where they can work together again on an intermittent basis. Stevie shines as a solo artist. I cried when I saw her in 2008, lol. How groupy...lol
@WitchyWonder Another Mac strength was the individual styles of each writer. Each is unique, which makes FM even more unique (being one of the few groups to incorporate - 'almost' evenly - 3 lead singer/songwriters - with far more divergent styles than say John, Paul & George of the Beatles. IMO, Stevie shut down her haters when she delivered one of the great rock LPs of the last 30 years - 1981's Bella Donna. Lindsey wasn't there to take credit - it's all Stevie & it's incredible! An A+ IMO!
@redletter2008 I also remember some of their interviews where he was constantly interrupting her. He was jealous of her fame. I think Lindsey is a brilliant acoustic player and like a lot of his music as well, but he can not hold a candle to Stevie. I remember her family wanting to kick his skinny behind at one point.
@WitchyWonder No doubt! I think Buckingham was always resentful of Stevie's stardom (which came on fast, just after they joined FM). Then, that little girl goes off and writes a #1 song to boot! To top it off, she launches a solo career that has seen her sell probably 10-20 times the output of Lindsey. In his mind, I think he still feels she should pay "homage" to him for getting her into FM, helping sort out her arrangements (which any producer would do) and inspiring so many great SN songs!
i was born in 76 and, now that a find this sound i knew that this is the sound tha ringed in my head for 34 years!!!!!! my mother used to ear this kind of music and the rest is history!!! wwwwooowww
I also write/play/perform live and ect, and from a writer's point of view, I think that although the song is wonderful and beautiful, in and of itself, it's such a passionate piece and this version seems as though it's missing something. I think they knew that it's potential wasn't fully realized. While I don't agree with not releasing it when they could have, I do think that the more recognized version is the better of the two. However, it's really awesome to hear both. :)
and.. here is the bif Time Space interview in which she tells the whole story about Silversprings and the fall-out. Search on YouTube 'Time Space Interview part 4' In this she accuses Mick of messing with her and her family! Time Space came out without Silversprings.
Oh..and before I forget.. the Interview in which she states clearly that the song was withheld from her for a project AND that it was her mothers! is on here under "Steve Nicks VH1 Interview" That exact search string. Now go do some research your self before you accuse anybody else of bad information.
You don't read very well. Steve was pissed off at Mick because he wouldn't agree to her using it...you!! should go and research her interviews on YouTube. She said that it was her mothers song and she would probably not forgive Mick for not letting her use it. In the end it turned up in her box set. In future do a little research yourself and don't be so bloody rude!
This was her mothers song. Last year she said that Mick wouldn't let her have it for an album (or was it the box set) anyhow, she decided that if Mick wouldn't let her have it she wouldn't go back out with the boys again. This time I think she really meant it. However, Stevie being a soft hearted girl, knows that crews and friends need that band in their lives so, she might change her mind. Maybe she already has..I have lost track of what's going on there. Nice song in any version.
@bloodwynpig7 I challenge your explanation of this song. And it was Rumors that this song didn't make it onto the first time... do a little more research, it has nothing to do with her mother.
This was the B-Side of the 45rpm "Go Your Own Way". Perhaps, Mick's half-assed way of satisfying Stevie's need to have her songs heard. My friend Jackie had a copy but wouldn't part with it for anything. So, no; it wasn't a hit but Mac fans knew it was out there...and we knew to wait...Stevie never lets you down!
also my fav song but i agree with who said it has to say Ill follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you" & etc... yes that part makes the song for me i love it!!!!
I think it's wonderful but i'm disturbed at the absence of the line "I'll follow you down till the sould of my voice will haunt you you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you". It was such an important messege from this song to me.
@TheFryguy82 i agree and i think it's interesting that line is left out of this early version but is there in the more recent versions. loves him more in 97 than she did in 76 perhaps.
I think it's wonderful but i'm disturbed at the absence of the line "I'll follow you down till the sould of my voice will haunt you" It was such an important messege from this song to me.
Her voice is at such a different pitch. Much higher than usual. Although it doesn't matter what pitch she sings; she's got this "Magical Aura" to her that NO song she sings ever sounds bad! She's a Magickal person, what else is there to say?
Shacking up was the conciliatory replacement for Lindsey's original choice "Crackin' Up" which Stevie vehemently argued against. No wonder Lindsey never gets a to speak on "Wassup Wit Dat?"
Revenge is best served cold...I love this song....perfectly perfect in every way. this is a great raw version. It sounds sadder than the more current versions...in which she seems to sing a bit angrier, for lack of a better word.
@lisasboogies The cool thing here is the fact that Lindsey arranged this song beautifully (even though, of course, it is about how his philandering hurt Stevie and ended their relationship), plays an incredible guitar solo on it, and in 2004 at Atlantic City finished it for Stevie when she broke down crying toward the end. That one is posted on here - it has a heart symbol on the list for it. Oh - I agree that the lines about her voice haunting him forever are what make this so spectacular
@jking1737 thanks for the response...I agree completely with your comment. and I did look up your suggestion..it was great in a different way than this version, obviously. I know that she was pissed as hell that they didn't allow this song on the album...I've read that it was MIck or Lindsay who didn't allow it...stronger versions claim Lindsay didn't want this b/c it was "too angry" and he didn't want to perform it....who knows.
@jking1737 thanks for the response...I agree completely with your comment. and I did look up your suggestion..it was great in a different way than this version, obviously. I know that she was pissed as hell that they didn't allow this song on the album...
I don't believe this was on their solo album. I believe Stevie wrote this in response to her and Lindsay's break up. He wrote "Go Your Own Way", she wrote this (this was the B-side of that single). She gave the royalties of the song to her mom, and then it ended up getting dropped from the Rumours album. Stevie kinda got her revenge when this became a huge hit following The Dance was was included on the remastered version of Rumours as intended.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Buckingham / Nicks had this on their solo album didn't they?? But, it just didn't make any of the Fleetwood Albums like....."Crystal" did. I am just trying to think of all the songs they did that they contributed when they joined the band.
Rumours is an album where each song is styled in a different genre of music (Second Hand News based around Celtic, Dreams is Jazzy, Never Going Back Again si Acoustic, Don't Stop is 60's, Go Your Own Way is basic Rock, Songbird is a Piece, The Chain and Gold Dust Woman are Southern Rock, You Make Loving Fun is abit like Disco), to me, Silver Springs was going to be the Ballad.
Fantastic!! I am curious how one gets a hold of tracks like these. Anywho...I love this version and even the live version of it. Stevie is just magical..........
@ecl11 lol true, but not as much as the burn he did to her with her singing "packing up, shacking up's all you want to do" on "Go Your Own Way". OUUUCH!
I really really love this version

ahh, I have heard this before. If I am nt mistaken, this is the versioin used for the B side of the 45 produced for jukeboxes in the very late 70's.
I searched for this for about 10 years before learning that it was the b side of that single. In 87-88, I found a copy of the singel… for 85$.
So, thanks for posting.

I like the album and live version better because of the back up singing. The marony does something with the song. This sounds a little too flat.

My favorite Stevie song...

I think it's wonderful but i'm disturbed at the absence of the line "I'll follow you down till the sould of my voice will haunt you you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you". It was such an important messege from this song to me.

@TheFryguy82
really? i always thought that line turned a gorgeous love song into a stalker anthem

Oh yeah...this is a very very bitter song dude....hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. hahahaha

@TheFryguy82 i agree and i think it's interesting that line is left out of this early version but is there in the more recent versions. loves him more in 97 than she did in 76 perhaps.

@TheFryguy82 I agree. I really relate to this song...I guess love and loss is universal.

Her voice is at such a different pitch. Much higher than usual. Although it doesn't matter what pitch she sings; she's got this "Magical Aura" to her that NO song she sings ever sounds bad! She's a Magickal person, what else is there to say?

I`ve been searching all over for this version of this song because it`s the best recording and i think that was the intention

Great song! Better than the version she sings now. Stevie should have been a country singer. I think she does really well in country sounding songs!
scryingeyes 1 year ago
@scryingeyes She was a country singer originally, check out Buckingham Nicks...

but having Lindsey sing on the song too made it so much more a burn.
ecl11 1 year ago
@ecl11 lol true, but not as much as the burn he did to her with her singing "packing up, shacking up's all you want to do" on "Go Your Own Way". OUUUCH!
