Frank seems very content and the questions are actually about his music and not the same old trivia crap that all rock artists get asked about.
@hesteaeble Well he says that Jefferson Airplane made political music to sell records...it could be argued that they jumped on the bandwagon of many 60's causes like the anti-Vietnam movement and so on. MC5 were quite sensational politically, as Zappa said. They said a lot of radical things in interviews, possibly to get attention. Both bands are still great hough , even if their politics are questionable.
We could offer God Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga in exchange for Frank, but he'd probably still want something else, as those two bozos will never come close to the genius that was Frank.. We need Frank back more than ever now.

seriously I never used to listen to zappa but now I could say his amazing and a tastefully musically sence of humor which makes his music pore interesting RIP frank zappa you said in one of your last interviews that you wouldn't like to be remember but guess what you will always be remember
@courtnieJ Actually, Frank did not use any drugs, and would not tolerate it from any of his musicians (except beer, and then very strictly not during sessions or practice). He said it made them stupid. It may seem surprising, but it was pretty common knowledge that Frank Zappa looked down his long nose at all drugs except cigarettes and coffee, which he consumed constantly.
@rumpledilskin You're right, of course, but he really does look high here -- his movements, facial expressions, etc... Maybe he was sleep deprived, or maybe he was high on nicotine and caffeine; he appears to be smoking especially intensely. Maybe he felt the effects of his two drugs more than most people do. ... On the subject of his looking down his nose, it seems he could be arrogant and likable, even charming, at once. Rare trick.
I respect Frank Zappa as a person more than most musical artists. He's a wonderful conversationalist and seems like a "real", good, sensible guy. From what I hear, he has raised a great, tight, supportive family.

FANTASTIC FRANK ZAPPA MASTER CLASS now free on Ustream! Theory and analysis of Peaches, Watermelon in Easter Hay, Envelopes, etc.. HUGELY fun, entertaining and educational. Type in "Dave Frank" Zappa on Ustream website anytime. You vill dig this:)
Yo Russallert, Why are you on this site? If you knew anything at all about F.Z. it was that he didn't give a fuck about reaching the green day audience. Frank played for his OWN enjoyment and if others enjoyed it as well, then so be it. Now go back and practice your smoke on the water chords, MANGIARE MERDA E MORIRE...
If you're on this site it's not by accident, you ARE a Frank fan. This man was with out a doubt the most influential musician of our life time. Young people in music theory will be studying his works for ions. To say that he is missed is an understatement, their has never been and never will be another man of his abilities. Can you just imagine all the events over the past 10 years that he would have slammed? OK, now make sure you all are in Baltimore on Sept. 19th for the statue celebration
don't know why you're driven to post them. you're impertinent. irrelevant. you don't get what's going on. what you post shows people only this. that you take the time to try and self-justify your own lack of appreciation, gets you to be a cunt in people's eyes. deal with it.
are you retarded? zappa's whole philosophy behind song-writing WAS to be a selfish artist. why would he write music for an audience if HE didn't enjoy it? people who recreate three chord pop songs are the ones accountable for the horrid musical culture in america ever since the 50's, really. Good music can't be defined. If it IS about communication it was clearly between his music and himself. if you as a listener enjoy it, awesome, if you don't, so be it. there are no rules in music
@1m2a3t4t5 - That's a tough one, actually. "...For the Money" is just staggeringly brilliant and sounds like it could be a musical, to hilarious and awe-inspiring effect. "Hot Rats" is....Hot Rats. What else needs to be said? "Freak Out!" and "Absolutely Free" are often dismissed as mere blueprints for "....Money", but all three possess some unique variation on the MOI sound, aesthetic and ideology, not to mention atmosphere. Also, I find "Burnt Weeny" oddly addictive; side two makes a (cont.)
@narozzz - (cont.) great case for the Mothers OF INVENTION as a tight, just about virtuosic, but clearly awesome band, not just Zappa's clumsy sherpas who were the only ones willing to climb THAT mountain. Black and Estrada lock in and rock out like true MOTHERS in that "Little House", without a doubt. Furthermore, I firmly believe -in spite of my spotty knowledge on the subject- that if one must pick ONE 70's record, it's Roxy & Elsewhere. Hands. DOWN.
@narozzz - *An admission - I have yet to absorb my copy of "The Grand Wazoo" front-to-back as of yet. This just HAD to be the week it became clear that the fifty bucks for a new needle was an absolutely necessary investment before ANY further listening could safely be had, now didn't it? *groan*......
@1m2a3t4t5 - Well, you can't REALLY seperate the two, but the MOI albums truly made history, and they're still a bit terrifying. In many ways they may be viewed as a link between the Velvet Underground and the rest of the Sixties, where they apparently never really belonged. Everybody knows "Over-Nite" and "Apostrophe(')", and they're fine albums, but "Roxy" is the one everyone should hear. Everything that positively distinguished that period in one place, in peak form and hugely appealing.
@narozzz - *My feelings about the "Zoot"/"Sheik"/"Joe's Garage" aesthetic are pretty redundant for the most part, in that if you've ever read anything about Zappa, you've likely heard some version of them. As for the orchestral stuff, not my department at the moment, but I'm interested in hearing more of it. "More" meaning whatever that means in Zappa's world. Listen, I know next to nothing about the guy. I own ONLY FIFTEEN of his albums! Pathetic, right? You're probably wondering why I'm here!
@russallert I knew and loved Zappa. We had such fun giving the Rabbi's the business on Fairfax and guess what, C-U-N-T- fits you perfectly. I don't think The Hip Cat Daddy would have to look any further than CUNT to describe you. Who are you to say what Zappa understood? It is obvious you understand nothing, music being only the beginning of your delusion. You have no idea how creative Zappas was. He was a genius composer and could work in any style. But best of all, he made me laugh!
@russallert Hi russ, just fuck all you clowns and shutup a sec, ... russ - Frank was not a wanker, nope. To say this that they aren't a wanker about someone they have to be a serious person and Frank was a serious person who found the world to be absurd, imagine that; right? And you can't say he was so selfish either, he was a performer and a performance is 'given' so he gave. He also sold records from his house, what a cool guy. I don't like much of his music either but some I love + I love him
@russallert Frank Zappa was (or ssould I say IS) an iconoclast I-C-O-N-O-C-L-A-S-T . Maybe you do not get it; his art was not so much a positive, life affirming thing that most people go for in pop music. He was fucking with THE WIRING UNDER THE BOARD. Most people don't understand the subleties of SELF PARODY, IRONY & PARADOX; If you don't get Zappa, then Bowie is a start. Yes, he was something of a "self important artist", but I, personally, will take NO criticism of the music of the Mothers.
@russallert - Quit perpetuating a false dichotomy - it's all about how WELL the given harmonic language is USED as a means to communicate. Zappa adored both "The Rite of spring" and "Louie, Louie". Makes sense to me.
@scarbowl Good Point! But he was about non censorship, and the term mother fucker was used by frank as a compliment and it was used to name "the mothers"
He was clearly a smart man, you couldn't tell by his appearence alone. Then again, many smart people have a unique, rugged, and sometimes over the top look. Miss ya Frank!!
@greenfruitface Actuaully they changed t-shirts before the interview. So Frank is wearing a t-shirt of the interviewer, and the interviewer is wearing Frank's shirt.

courtnieJ 1 year ago
@courtnieJ Actually, Frank did not use any drugs, and would not tolerate it from any of his musicians (except beer, and then very strictly not during sessions or practice). He said it made them stupid. It may seem surprising, but it was pretty common knowledge that Frank Zappa looked down his long nose at all drugs except cigarettes and coffee, which he consumed constantly.
rumpledilskin 1 year ago
@rumpledilskin You're right, of course, but he really does look high here -- his movements, facial expressions, etc... Maybe he was sleep deprived, or maybe he was high on nicotine and caffeine; he appears to be smoking especially intensely. Maybe he felt the effects of his two drugs more than most people do. ... On the subject of his looking down his nose, it seems he could be arrogant and likable, even charming, at once. Rare trick.

@jimirymodestoca Indeed. Rare man. I can't help but think that we need him now more than ever.
Long nose to look down, too...

I respect Frank Zappa as a person more than most musical artists. He's a wonderful conversationalist and seems like a "real", good, sensible guy. From what I hear, he has raised a great, tight, supportive family.

1PazzoVita 1 year ago
If you're on this site it's not by accident, you ARE a Frank fan. This man was with out a doubt the most influential musician of our life time. Young people in music theory will be studying his works for ions. To say that he is missed is an understatement, their has never been and never will be another man of his abilities. Can you just imagine all the events over the past 10 years that he would have slammed? OK, now make sure you all are in Baltimore on Sept. 19th for the statue celebration

Frank Zappa had a truly honest and inspiring personality which he easily transfered over to his music.
Wether you agree with his thinking or even like his music you still must respect him.

are you retarded? zappa's whole philosophy behind song-writing WAS to be a selfish artist. why would he write music for an audience if HE didn't enjoy it? people who recreate three chord pop songs are the ones accountable for the horrid musical culture in america ever since the 50's, really. Good music can't be defined. If it IS about communication it was clearly between his music and himself. if you as a listener enjoy it, awesome, if you don't, so be it. there are no rules in music
odoylerules47 1 year ago
@odoylerules47 "There are no rules in music."
Zappa would be the first to tell you you're wrong about that.

whats your favorite zappa album
1m2a3t4t5 1 year ago
@1m2a3t4t5 - That's a tough one, actually. "...For the Money" is just staggeringly brilliant and sounds like it could be a musical, to hilarious and awe-inspiring effect. "Hot Rats" is....Hot Rats. What else needs to be said? "Freak Out!" and "Absolutely Free" are often dismissed as mere blueprints for "....Money", but all three possess some unique variation on the MOI sound, aesthetic and ideology, not to mention atmosphere. Also, I find "Burnt Weeny" oddly addictive; side two makes a (cont.)
narozzz 1 year ago
@narozzz - (cont.) great case for the Mothers OF INVENTION as a tight, just about virtuosic, but clearly awesome band, not just Zappa's clumsy sherpas who were the only ones willing to climb THAT mountain. Black and Estrada lock in and rock out like true MOTHERS in that "Little House", without a doubt. Furthermore, I firmly believe -in spite of my spotty knowledge on the subject- that if one must pick ONE 70's record, it's Roxy & Elsewhere. Hands. DOWN.
narozzz 1 year ago
@narozzz - *An admission - I have yet to absorb my copy of "The Grand Wazoo" front-to-back as of yet. This just HAD to be the week it became clear that the fifty bucks for a new needle was an absolutely necessary investment before ANY further listening could safely be had, now didn't it? *groan*......
narozzz 1 year ago
@narozzz
thanks for the reply, would you say frank zappa albums himself are better to listen to or mothers of invention
1m2a3t4t5 1 year ago
@1m2a3t4t5 - Well, you can't REALLY seperate the two, but the MOI albums truly made history, and they're still a bit terrifying. In many ways they may be viewed as a link between the Velvet Underground and the rest of the Sixties, where they apparently never really belonged. Everybody knows "Over-Nite" and "Apostrophe(')", and they're fine albums, but "Roxy" is the one everyone should hear. Everything that positively distinguished that period in one place, in peak form and hugely appealing.
narozzz 1 year ago
@narozzz
cool, so besides Frank Zappa what are some of your other favorite artists/bands
1m2a3t4t5 1 year ago
@narozzz - *My feelings about the "Zoot"/"Sheik"/"Joe's Garage" aesthetic are pretty redundant for the most part, in that if you've ever read anything about Zappa, you've likely heard some version of them. As for the orchestral stuff, not my department at the moment, but I'm interested in hearing more of it. "More" meaning whatever that means in Zappa's world. Listen, I know next to nothing about the guy. I own ONLY FIFTEEN of his albums! Pathetic, right? You're probably wondering why I'm here!
narozzz 1 year ago
@russallert I knew and loved Zappa. We had such fun giving the Rabbi's the business on Fairfax and guess what, C-U-N-T- fits you perfectly. I don't think The Hip Cat Daddy would have to look any further than CUNT to describe you. Who are you to say what Zappa understood? It is obvious you understand nothing, music being only the beginning of your delusion. You have no idea how creative Zappas was. He was a genius composer and could work in any style. But best of all, he made me laugh!
MsPatty1952 1 year ago
@russallert Hi russ, just fuck all you clowns and shutup a sec, ... russ - Frank was not a wanker, nope. To say this that they aren't a wanker about someone they have to be a serious person and Frank was a serious person who found the world to be absurd, imagine that; right? And you can't say he was so selfish either, he was a performer and a performance is 'given' so he gave. He also sold records from his house, what a cool guy. I don't like much of his music either but some I love + I love him
Elricck 1 year ago
@russallert Frank Zappa was (or ssould I say IS) an iconoclast I-C-O-N-O-C-L-A-S-T . Maybe you do not get it; his art was not so much a positive, life affirming thing that most people go for in pop music. He was fucking with THE WIRING UNDER THE BOARD. Most people don't understand the subleties of SELF PARODY, IRONY & PARADOX; If you don't get Zappa, then Bowie is a start. Yes, he was something of a "self important artist", but I, personally, will take NO criticism of the music of the Mothers.
blacknganga 1 year ago
@russallert - Quit perpetuating a false dichotomy - it's all about how WELL the given harmonic language is USED as a means to communicate. Zappa adored both "The Rite of spring" and "Louie, Louie". Makes sense to me.
