The attacks at 2:10 and 2:17 are almost realistic, but in most knife defense videos the credibility just isn't there, unless we assume that all knife attackers will be very drunk.

Therefore, it is good to practice this, albeit, in a private place behind a locked door with your best friend or parent, if they allow it (which they probably won't, one might if he/she was in the army, i suppose...).

I respect systema as I practice a different martial arts system with very similar philosophies and concepts, and I think these are skilled instructors, but I have a problem with knife-disarming techniques, particularly the karate-style block of a downward stab in a reverse grip. Despite what Bourne movies show, it's nearly impossible to disarm a knife-armed opponent and not get cut! Being cut is better than being dead, but if someone comes at me with a knife, I'm getting out of the way.

We were trained to use deadly force, and our combat survival to disarm an enemy is meant to kill the enemy. Civilians need to learn survival skills in order to protect themselves. A lot of what you may be observing is "tracing" the motion of the knife

Grabbing the blade should not be the first thing to do but it is an aspect of knife that is worth learning about and drilling

The point of this video is to show how to deflect anything and everything from any angle. This is just showing the basic principles of the moves. If they were going serious, the guy with the knife would be dead in a few seconds. Spetsnaz are the toughest and best special forces in close combat in the world, all of them are master martial artists and learn to kill with their barehands. And why would u put ur best moves on DVD, so enemy can watch and learn how to beat you?

(not saying thats you, i'm just bouncing off your comment to make my own) Almost every technique shown would result in the defender being injured by the knife. MOST weapon disarm tactics are a joke in reality. Aikido has some simple knife disarms that have proven to work in the real world however.

What I'm saying is, and this is true of MOST martial arts training, is that NOBODY is going to use that type of arm swing movement and leaving their arm in midair when they try to stab you. If they aren't training DEFENSIVELY to protect themselves from the same caliber of attack, then they are just training you how to die. All throughout this video the guy is directing the attackers knife toward the defenders neck and vital areas.  He's HELPING the badguy improve his lethality. A little training is better than none, but poor training only gets you killed.

if they are waving like crazy, just dodge to the sides, never backwards unless cautios of the environment and as soon as he makes a large bow he is unprotected, same happens with fists, elbows, etc. he leaves one of his sides unprotected, that is when you approach and hit. If he is under alcohol or drugs also break some arms and legs just incase as they dont feel pain and react differently

@Agtren from experience and training. never encountered an extremely crazy person waving a knife. but look at this video, all the time they are grabbing their hands, that is possible because of large bows 2:23 , but a professional never waves like that, against a professional you can't wait until he attacks and grab his arm like in this video, that is just impossible. Against an unprofessional, usually same happens, it is miliseconds to react and grab properly before he stabs or cuts.

@iLoGiiKzv0 I mostly train bjj. My striking is in embryonic stage, so I can't rely on it. If I were attacked with a knife, I'd rely on a standing joint-lock against the wrist, elbow or shoulder. I'm not bad at those, and I resistance-tested them against an attacker with a rubber knife with 50% success. That is, I disarm my attacker (usually my brother) half the time, and the other half the time I get stabbed or cut.

However, in real life, my attacker won't know I favor standing joint locks...

@t1ppsy Actually this is just how you train. You start slow and speed it up. Stabbing isn't how you're supposed to use knife necessarily. Slashing is more practical. And sambo relies upon the strength and weight of the attacker. I don't know if they still use combat sambo. But in Moldova they teach you from young age sport sambo. Well that's me anyways. I am ethnic russian so I went to different school because most in Moldova are romanian peoples.
