Turning the knob with the machine switched on is very bad for the timer!

You'd better turn the knob with the door open. The timer isn't being powered when the door is open.

The timer also isn't powered when you wtich the machine off with the button, but it looks as if the button is broken ;)

So if you want to make sure that your Miele lives long, you should care about the timer ;)

But it looks like the on off button is broken, but then he should turn the dial and then close the door.
