@DenPameKa8olouKala his slow showing of it agreed, but ive seen street fights where side kicks are very effective, not only pushing ur opponent back but also a very swift one to the guts will wind anybody, if somebody was rushing towards hoping for the running haymaker then a fast side kick would be effective again as it has more reach, diffrent moves for diffrent situations, its just a fighting move, you have to know when to use it at the right given time, a good tradie never blames his tools
Hi i am 18 and i'v been putting some serious thought into learning Karate. If there are any of you who have a bit of experience i would love to hear from you. Just want a little advice on a few things.and would like to hear about how your experience with Karate was.. a personal message would be great. Thanks.
@MrBotheman i dont do karate, i do shaolin, but it all depends what you are willing to learn and what YOU want to get out of it. I know some who have done karate, and didn't like it simply because it was a monotonous routine of kicking and punching. now that couldve very well been the place they went to and other places might offer better. best advice for you is do you want the full discipline and training as in authentic or another place designed as a more simple martial arts school?
@MrBotheman The style you learn will depend greatly on what is available where you want to live. What matters more than style is your commitment to developing power by seeking wisdom. Commitment.
Try kicking a hard surface with the top of your foot. It will hurt big time might even break some bones. Fight over. The only parts you should use for contact are the ball, heel, shine and knee. Pull them toes back. Snap it like a bow whip. Your gi pants should make a snapping or a loud CRACK at the end of a kick. THINK BOW WHIP PEPS.
I finally managed to master that Roundhouse kick! I kept on making the mistake of pointing both feet forwards instead of my kicking foot sidewards so that it can retrace its position. I prefer kicking to punching because my legs are a lot stronger than my arms hence why I completely suck at rounders, cricket, shotput and so on but I am OK at netball and basketball because I often use my legs for the speed and power. My hands are so uncontrollable; I almost hit a teacher in shotput!
oh shut up people, if ur so good at it, then post a vid of u doing a martial arts form...
go on and make it.. i'm waiting..
they are good kicks (well i'm only a blue belt in karate =p) and i'm a little worse than u! my flexibility sucks because of my poor left leg (i broke 5 times due to bike riding, skateboarding, and sparring in martial arts)
i love to watch other people do martial arts and i'm gonna b the first female instructor in ma class if i keep going till i'm a black belt =)
the guys who say this is incorrect the way he is doing it please post a video of you showing how to do it right as i would like to know d right way sincerly. as for it not workin on street (not proud of it ) but i get in lotta fights coz way i was wen i was young (basically thought i was hard man at school and so on) i dont no how to do this d right way but it works on lil pikeys on d streets if hit at good timing as does drunken boxing(not proper drunken boxing general drunken fighting) lol
lol to all those idiots who say high kicks wouldnt work on the street fact is they can work just fine if you are able to create an opening when you fight the object is to create an opening and seize the opportunity you cant just expect things to work
High kicks are good for the ring and they look cool, but its easy to defend/ block high kicks. And they take so long to train! They do have a place, and that place is not self defence.
i did TKD for 15 years and although i am not training now i think my kicks are still better than his, he only half chambers his side kick and the turning kick (roundhouse) is weak, i.e. the lower leg comes around too long after the thigh has come into the kicking position.
This is a massive letdown for advertising the brilliant art of Tae Kwon Do.
@donnysmeegs 15 years and I'd figure you'd have a better understanding of side kicks. I'm not justifying this vid's poor technique, but its scientifically proven full chambering of the leg both overly telegraphs and actually reduces power.
I need an opinion about learning martial arts. Do you think that I can learn martial arts by myself? I mean I learn without any trainer or someone to teach me. By just watching video, do you think that I can achieve what I want? Please answer this question, thanks :D
depends on what path you choose the warrior the fighter or self-defense you will need a partner and teacher but once you get good you can venture out on your on a little bit boxing and kickboxing you can do on your own but it's best if you get a teacher or if you know someone with that type of knowledge before i become a fighter i was a self taught boxer at the age of 14 people told me it wouldn't be useful but there were so wrong i've won all my street fights so you never really can tell
nice moves! here's a question (possibly redundant) have you seen the movie ip man & what do you think of the scene when he takes on ten guys at once, beating them all without being hit?
Colour of the belt means nothing, especially these days it seems. These kicks would be ok in competition, i suppose. In real technique its not how you strike but where you hit! Martial arts is about the effect you have on the other person, not how you look doing the move. Maybe check out some military unarmed combat or bujutsu like Cobu bujutsu, seriously, do you want to display or fight?
One thing about that stance maybe you do that to practice, but from what I learned in Ninjutsu having a fighting stance with a certain foot in front gives away too much about you to your opponent, you tell him what your able to do and which leg u'll possibly strike with
On the sidekick you're supossed to rotate your hips. He just stood there and kind of twisted his knee. When the foot you're kicking with on the sidekick is in the air the balance foot that is on the ground should almost be facing the opposite direction.
He forgot to tell everyone that when your doing a roundhouse when you bring your leg up, point your knee at your opponent...and during a side kick after you chamber you leg, when you kick out, you have to twist you hip into it.
he forgets to mention that when doing a round kick the chambered knee is directed towards the target, while doing the side kick the knee is chambered in front of the body, so the plane of the kick forms a straight line from the butt to full extension. Two key elements which differentiate the two kicks from one another they shouldn't be performed the exact same way
doesnt that suck :( i like an hour away from any martial arts gym, but im finally able to take kickboxing so im hopefully starting that really soon :) but my mom wont drive in the winter......so ya i cant do it in the winter D:
@Hotora86 Thats true but there are some ppl who acctually want to learn this b4 they go and practice random ass kicking. so yea. b4 u go and train like that u need 2 no the technique tht ur training to do!!
@poketripper You WILL NOT learn proper technique from watching a video. Take it from someone who trained multiple MAs. Videos are a nice supplement when you already know the technique but never a primary source.
@z7999 1. This is not proper technique. 2. A garage is not the best place to train martial arts. 3. Kickboxing gyms have all the equipment you will need to perfect the kick. 4. They also have COACHES who will correct your mistakes and teach you proper technique, unlike this YouTube wannabe.
@Hotora86 1. This IS the proper technique for a roundhouse kick, i've done martial arts for a good percentage of my life. 2. A garage is an open area with usually no distractions and so can be used, it was an example. 3. Yes, they have the equipment, but they cost to get into them and you could just save money. 4. you can look at multiple videos to get the perfect technique if you dont trust one and therefore do it correctly.
@Hotora86 Sorry for me then? I do 4 hours of Karate a week with a sensei who was world champion and 3 hours of kickboxing with a trainer who has done it for 17 years. I havent wasted* any time mate :)
@z7999 Gimme a name, I'm curious. BTW you prove my point then, since you go to a gym/dojo a learn from a real life coach/sensei instead of watching YouTube vids and fooling around in your garage.
@Hotora86 I dont prove your point, im learning an ENTIRE martial art, infact im learning two ENTIRE martial arts, i could learn it from youtube, but it would be pointless and take fucking ages, this video is just for one specific kick. His name is Nathan Marsh.
@z7999 Now I know why you think this is proper technique. I found Nathan Marsh on the web - it IS a McDojo. Japanese, Chinese and Korean tradition all mixed up? Check. All sorts of shit for sale? Check. Mostly kids training? Check. Instant instructors? Check. Fitness classes for ladies? Check. Not a member of any legit org? Check. I bet you pay for every exam too. The saddest part is that you've got the bloody KUGB in Kent! One of the best Karate orgs in the world! And you went for this? Damn.
@Hotora86 Nathan has done over 8 martial arts in his life and gives us the best range he can. all sorts of shit for sale? no, all the stuff for sale is useful in the martial art and is taught by the instructors. Instant instructors? no. they have to go through a hard training programme before they are even considered.
@z7999 Oh come on! Go train with the KUGB and open your eyes! Nathan may be a great guy but he just wants to make a living! There are better places where you can learn Karate. Go, explore, train, try! That's the way of Karate - the old masters from Okinawa cross-trained different disciplines, they often visited China for inspiration, they never limited themselves to ONE teacher. Even my own sensei advised me to cross-train.
@Hotora86 I'm also doing kickboxing as well as Karate? KUBG is a shotokan club, i've done shotokan previously and i found the constant same techniques boring, i have my reasons for going with my current club and i'm a very proud member of them.
@z7999 I fear not a man who practiced a thousand kicks. I fear a man who practiced one kick a thousand times. If you find the constant repetition of techniques boring you know nothing about Karate and will never be good at it, no matter how many blackbelts your beloved Nathan sells to you. Have a nice day.
@Hotora86 I worded the sentence wrong. I'll put it in a different way. I found doing the same thing over and over again, boring. All i did was Kata's, every lesson, kata kata kata, now im not sure about you, but you learn better when you're having fun, not being bored to death, this current club varies what it does and doesnt do the same thing every lesson, you do the same techniques yes, but its presented in a way which is fun and educational.
@z7999 Gichin Funakoshi spent 3 years repeating every kata he had learned. He could not proceed further until Itosu or Azato agreed the performance was perfect. In my dojo we had to repeat the same kata for 6 months (with bunkai, kihon and kumite of course) before we could pass our next belt test. One of Nathan's videos on YT show an "improv kata" which is showy and worthless. If your dojo's main goal is having fun that's great, just call it a preschool or gym for children, not a Karate dojo.
@Hotora86 At what point did i say the whole point is having fun? Perfection cannot be reached, no matter how hard you train, yes, you can train one kick a million times and be the best in the world at it, but if someone learns a move which can deflect and counter than kick, who's going to be destroyed in a fighting situation? We vary our moves to overcome different fighting situations, we dont just learn something and pretend thats the way its going to go EVERY time.
@z7999 If I train a kick 1000 times and you learn a move that counters that specific kick, even if you repeat that move a few times I will still land that kick and knock you out. There have been people who won world championships in Karate using ONLY gyaku-tzuki. There are dozens if not hundreds of ways of countering gyaku-tzuki but if it is trained EVERY DAY for many years, if it is performed PERFECTLY then there is no way to defend from it, even if you're a goddamn walking Karate encyclopedia.
@Hotora86 The whole point of a counter is to defend against the move and strike back, if you counter the kick and it still hits and knocks you out, then its not a counter is it? If this kick is so amazingly awesome that it cant be countered, why doesnt every martial art just learn this kick?
@z7999 You don't understand. Read my post again. A martial art is not a set of magic moves that instantly change you into some kind of ninja. No matter how many moves you KNOW, they are worthless unless you train them for many years, in kihon (basics), in kata+bunkai (forms+explanation) and in kumite (sparring). So once again, if I train a technique for 10 years and you learn a counter to that specific technique in one day, I will still land my technique and knock you out. Do you understand now?
@Hotora86 I understood your post perfectly the first time, but just because you learnt this one specific kick for 10 years, doesnt mean you will land it and knock me out, just because i only spent a day on this specific counter doesnt mean anything, yes, the chances are that i will likely not be able to counter your kick, but, even if you are perfect at the kick, which perfection isnt possible, i still have a chance of countering the kick.
@z7999 I disagree in the sense that your chances would be close to zero. I'd have to telegraph the technique but I would not if I spent 10 years doing it. If the number of techniques you know would be the most important thing Brock Lesnar wouldn't have become the UFC LHW champ. And I hate the guy but he proves my point. He barely knows ANY striking or submission techniques but his wrestling is extremely good. Again, my example of gyaku-tzuki (reverse punch if you don't know) stands as well.
@Hotora86 Im not saying the number of techniques you know the better, OBVIOUSLY you need to practice, but just because someone trains one specific move for 10 years, hey, lets say they are perfect at it, it doesnt mean anything, if they catch the opponent off guard, they're fucked, yes. But they could reverse this technique even will a bit of practice. From the way you're saying it, it seems like you're saying if you train one move, you'll beat all counters. I know you arent though, just sounds.
@z7999 I don't get your last sentence, you should work on your English. Anyway, go visit the KUGB, they'll kick your ass and maybe you'll see what's wrong with Nathan. Or I could hook you up with my 18 y.o. friend in London and you can spar. Or you can just go back to your McDojo and call yourself a ninja for all I care. I was just surprised to see such crap in Great Britain, a country famous for its Karate experts, that's why I got so worked up about it. I hope you learn in time. Take care.
@Hotora86 My last sentence didnt make sense because i ran out of characters, it's kind of difficult? I'm not visiting KUGB because i don't wish to learn Shotokan, i'm 16, why would i want to spar an 18 y.o professional? Thats just plain stupid. I'm not going to call myself a Ninja because i'm not training ninjitsu. Nathan was world champion at one point, i'm sure he would do well against KUGB's top fighters :)
@z7999 It says on your profile you're 18. Liar. I asked Nathan for some verifiable info on his qualifications but he did not respond. That tells me enough. You're a liar and wannabe training under a liar and wannabe. Suits you well then. Over and out.
@Hotora86 I created this profile when i was like 11? If you go by someones information on youtube, then you have some problems. He took a week to respond to me on facebook about a problem i'm having, so, chances are he'll take a while with you also. Dont jump to conclusions
Thanks for the friendship. As for martial arts, I am into Chinese ones so there are some differences in what we emphasis on the same move. I have much to learn to master mine. Still, I do admire your flexibility when it comes to high kicks. ;)
He is demonstrating what many disciplines have in common: fighters need to pull up their pants before moving into any stance. That's dumb.

wildapache1 10 months ago
@wildapache1 a gym is good because there are coaches there who correct your technique
Hotora86 10 months ago
@Hotora86 Or, you can watch this video, learn how to do it, go into your garage and practice. Get exactly the same result, but its alot cheaper! :D
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 1. This is not proper technique. 2. A garage is not the best place to train martial arts. 3. Kickboxing gyms have all the equipment you will need to perfect the kick. 4. They also have COACHES who will correct your mistakes and teach you proper technique, unlike this YouTube wannabe.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 1. This IS the proper technique for a roundhouse kick, i've done martial arts for a good percentage of my life. 2. A garage is an open area with usually no distractions and so can be used, it was an example. 3. Yes, they have the equipment, but they cost to get into them and you could just save money. 4. you can look at multiple videos to get the perfect technique if you dont trust one and therefore do it correctly.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 I'm sorry for you then. Must have waisted your time on a McDojo.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 Sorry for me then? I do 4 hours of Karate a week with a sensei who was world champion and 3 hours of kickboxing with a trainer who has done it for 17 years. I havent wasted* any time mate :)
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 Gimme a name, I'm curious. BTW you prove my point then, since you go to a gym/dojo a learn from a real life coach/sensei instead of watching YouTube vids and fooling around in your garage.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 I dont prove your point, im learning an ENTIRE martial art, infact im learning two ENTIRE martial arts, i could learn it from youtube, but it would be pointless and take fucking ages, this video is just for one specific kick. His name is Nathan Marsh.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 Now I know why you think this is proper technique. I found Nathan Marsh on the web - it IS a McDojo. Japanese, Chinese and Korean tradition all mixed up? Check. All sorts of shit for sale? Check. Mostly kids training? Check. Instant instructors? Check. Fitness classes for ladies? Check. Not a member of any legit org? Check. I bet you pay for every exam too. The saddest part is that you've got the bloody KUGB in Kent! One of the best Karate orgs in the world! And you went for this? Damn.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 Nathan has done over 8 martial arts in his life and gives us the best range he can. all sorts of shit for sale? no, all the stuff for sale is useful in the martial art and is taught by the instructors. Instant instructors? no. they have to go through a hard training programme before they are even considered.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 Oh come on! Go train with the KUGB and open your eyes! Nathan may be a great guy but he just wants to make a living! There are better places where you can learn Karate. Go, explore, train, try! That's the way of Karate - the old masters from Okinawa cross-trained different disciplines, they often visited China for inspiration, they never limited themselves to ONE teacher. Even my own sensei advised me to cross-train.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 I'm also doing kickboxing as well as Karate? KUBG is a shotokan club, i've done shotokan previously and i found the constant same techniques boring, i have my reasons for going with my current club and i'm a very proud member of them.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 I fear not a man who practiced a thousand kicks. I fear a man who practiced one kick a thousand times. If you find the constant repetition of techniques boring you know nothing about Karate and will never be good at it, no matter how many blackbelts your beloved Nathan sells to you. Have a nice day.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 I worded the sentence wrong. I'll put it in a different way. I found doing the same thing over and over again, boring. All i did was Kata's, every lesson, kata kata kata, now im not sure about you, but you learn better when you're having fun, not being bored to death, this current club varies what it does and doesnt do the same thing every lesson, you do the same techniques yes, but its presented in a way which is fun and educational.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 Gichin Funakoshi spent 3 years repeating every kata he had learned. He could not proceed further until Itosu or Azato agreed the performance was perfect. In my dojo we had to repeat the same kata for 6 months (with bunkai, kihon and kumite of course) before we could pass our next belt test. One of Nathan's videos on YT show an "improv kata" which is showy and worthless. If your dojo's main goal is having fun that's great, just call it a preschool or gym for children, not a Karate dojo.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 At what point did i say the whole point is having fun? Perfection cannot be reached, no matter how hard you train, yes, you can train one kick a million times and be the best in the world at it, but if someone learns a move which can deflect and counter than kick, who's going to be destroyed in a fighting situation? We vary our moves to overcome different fighting situations, we dont just learn something and pretend thats the way its going to go EVERY time.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 If I train a kick 1000 times and you learn a move that counters that specific kick, even if you repeat that move a few times I will still land that kick and knock you out. There have been people who won world championships in Karate using ONLY gyaku-tzuki. There are dozens if not hundreds of ways of countering gyaku-tzuki but if it is trained EVERY DAY for many years, if it is performed PERFECTLY then there is no way to defend from it, even if you're a goddamn walking Karate encyclopedia.
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 The whole point of a counter is to defend against the move and strike back, if you counter the kick and it still hits and knocks you out, then its not a counter is it? If this kick is so amazingly awesome that it cant be countered, why doesnt every martial art just learn this kick?
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 You don't understand. Read my post again. A martial art is not a set of magic moves that instantly change you into some kind of ninja. No matter how many moves you KNOW, they are worthless unless you train them for many years, in kihon (basics), in kata+bunkai (forms+explanation) and in kumite (sparring). So once again, if I train a technique for 10 years and you learn a counter to that specific technique in one day, I will still land my technique and knock you out. Do you understand now?
Hotora86 9 months ago
@Hotora86 I understood your post perfectly the first time, but just because you learnt this one specific kick for 10 years, doesnt mean you will land it and knock me out, just because i only spent a day on this specific counter doesnt mean anything, yes, the chances are that i will likely not be able to counter your kick, but, even if you are perfect at the kick, which perfection isnt possible, i still have a chance of countering the kick.
z7999 9 months ago
@z7999 I disagree in the sense that your chances would be close to zero. I'd have to telegraph the technique but I would not if I spent 10 years doing it. If the number of techniques you know would be the most important thing Brock Lesnar wouldn't have become the UFC LHW champ. And I hate the guy but he proves my point. He barely knows ANY striking or submission techniques but his wrestling is extremely good. Again, my example of gyaku-tzuki (reverse punch if you don't know) stands as well.
Hotora86 9 months ago

Take care.
Hotora86 8 months ago
@Hotora86 My last sentence didnt make sense because i ran out of characters, it's kind of difficult? I'm not visiting KUGB because i don't wish to learn Shotokan, i'm 16, why would i want to spar an 18 y.o professional? Thats just plain stupid. I'm not going to call myself a Ninja because i'm not training ninjitsu. Nathan was world champion at one point, i'm sure he would do well against KUGB's top fighters :)
z7999 8 months ago
@z7999 It says on your profile you're 18. Liar. I asked Nathan for some verifiable info on his qualifications but he did not respond. That tells me enough. You're a liar and wannabe training under a liar and wannabe. Suits you well then. Over and out.
Hotora86 8 months ago
@Hotora86 I created this profile when i was like 11? If you go by someones information on youtube, then you have some problems. He took a week to respond to me on facebook about a problem i'm having, so, chances are he'll take a while with you also. Dont jump to conclusions

Thanks for the friendship. As for martial arts, I am into Chinese ones so there are some differences in what we emphasis on the same move. I have much to learn to master mine. Still, I do admire your flexibility when it comes to high kicks. ;)
