E meraviglioso ! As someone else already commented here: In my opinion,Maestro Schipa was the finest 'tenore di grazia' on record. He had a sweet timbre and tone and his diction and phrasing were among the best of any era. Bravissimo Tito !
@CraigFrancisSoto D'accordo Craig. Hai ragione!
@luwaig1 You must learn that music is as serious a religion, if not more so, than the ordinary form… it transcends barriers and offers a more potent form of transcendental experience than another…
Bravo!
One of the most enjoyable performances by one of my very beloved tenor. If it gets any better than this-I'm scared to even go there for fear of my heart exploding. As his brother once said-I f he had the beauty of voice as Gigli along with his singing ability and technique-he'd have been the best ever of them all. Not to say that he was not one of the all time greats regardless.TY Candy for sending and dogieblitz for posting this very rare jewel.
Schipa and Tagliavini sing this with so much feeling and heartbreak. The text is the number one priority. There are "piano" markings throughout. It shouldn't be muscled. And I don't miss the unwritten high B at the end, which some singers seem to make their highest priority.
Great!!!!, his holding of a little book while singing, resembles to me another great bel canto singer; John Mc Cormack.
Me as a tenor, tend to think and ask to myself why they are holding this little book in their hands?...I guess it helps them to concentrate ...as well as giving them a special charm.
Anyhow, always is a pleasure to learn by watching and hearing this "unsurpased" great singers!!!!. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Weel, we must consider your opinion, obviously, and there is no way of having a definitive answer. So in respect of your doubts we are going to cancel the word "live".
If you look at the 1936 Gigli film I mentioned, you'll see the exact same thing (clip on YouTube). Equally, see the Lanza version of the Lament (listed down the right, I think) made 20 years later. Lanza's lip-synching was always truly awful. The circumstances (on stage with orchestra) are identical in both cases. None of these performances were live.
Anyway, whatever. If you prefer to think of them as recorded live, it doesn't make a lot of difference. They're all nice recordings.
I'm sure they were present at the shooting, and for all we know Schipa may well have sang or marked through process. But films as old as this - like Gigli's "Forget Me Not" - all used a pre-recorded soundtrack. All the old film clips here use the same process, like the guitar song.
There was a radio programme years ago where Domingo talked about the difficulty of filming convincingly, whether or not to mime and stay in sync, or sing along, get the muscles right but maybe lose syncronization.
@caruuso Yes, PB came in use when they needed to shoot singers in the open air or in edited sequences (same song, many different places). But when the singer was inside a theater and a real orchestra ad a conductor were present, you can easily notice that the sound was live. Actually it was much less complicated!
None of these film performances are live, the soundtrack is dubbed on afterwards. I heard one famous soprano (I forget her name) say it was because the directors wanted the singers to "look beautiful", which they couldn't do when they were ACTUALLY singing.
@caruuso Perhaps you don't know the matter enough. No singer could sing in PB with that perfect syncronization of the lips. And, no doubt, PB was not in use in Italy in those days. And after all, Schipa's family was present to the shooting... More: Schipa always looked beautiful while singing, due to the perfect no-struggle technique.

Thanks for sending this wonderful performance by Schipa, and thanks to dogieblitz for posting. A master of elegant singing combined with passion, interpretive artistry, and clear diction, Schipa is I believe the finest tenore di grazia on record.

According to his statement, he used to do that in order to avoid moving his hands while singing, wich he considered very unconvenient...
