I love this type of musicc.. can anyone please tell me what type of jazz this exactly is?? Some jazz are just too slow tempo and moody and others are just to bright for me.. but this.. this is perfection..
To be honest I dont believe that any piano player (ever) could swing harder and phrase better at a medium-slow than Benny. Oscar Peterson would tear it up but probably with a whole lot of notes and runs. I m not saying he is better than Oscar, it's just that Benny Green is at his best with this particular tempo.
@cilcsster bcs they spend 6-10 hours a day in one position practicing - which makes them hungry, so they eat, and because they're practicing all day (which makes them great) they don't really have much time to burn off all those calories... Some artists' metabolisms are better predisposed to that type of regiment.
@whennen I thought that he was sadly deceased, but maybe not? where is this dude, I want to meet the guy, and yeh, does he give lessons, as I want to take up the double bass, but classical though
God I miss Ray. It was good to see Benny at Jazz Alley last week and Christian McBride last night. I wish they would bring the Ray Brown tribute to Seattle. Call John at Jazz Alley and get him on the ball!
Great performance! If you like it I'm sure you would also like Gustav Csik -> My point of view -> Billie's Bounce. (Just mentioning because it is not easy to find that kind of stuff.)
Asolutel fantastic - great pace, great swing; perfect.
What's confusing me a little is that it appears Benny Green is reading the music - surely Blue Monk isn't the most challenging of pieces? Am I wrong in this assumption?
He's not reading while he's playing the blues, at that concert the Ray's trio was a rhythm section for the big band so those charts were for for the big band music
ray died in 2002. think real hard it must have been more than a few years ago. on the other hand I saw Benny Green last night. mad talented and mad humble...

Benny Green knows how to hold back, a skill which takes quite a bit of discipline to master.

Yes, the pianist certainly does "care", but is graciously taking a backseat to a master in the foreground.

Dex : ``How can you play jazz if you don't know blues?``
Form simple, but play it 100 times and ask yourself how to keep it interesting after the melody :)
