  • Stainless steel is naturally slightly magnetic. However, heating it (by welding for instance) can cause the alloy to change slightly and make it more magnetic. This can also happen if you bend or cut it. That's why the magnet is attracted to the seam and the cut edge. You have to be very careful about machining stainless if you want to preserve its magnetic properties.

  • I think perhaps your steel cup has what is called high permeability? In that it becomes magnetic temporarily while in contact with a permanent magnet ? I would be curious to see whether if you let the cup stand a few days away from all magnetic influences and you then applied your magnet(s) to the rim of the cup right off whether it would stick right away or it might take a few seconds ?

  • true. but electricity cannot be pushed inside the engine of your car, as brown's gas is. And quite flammable, though.
