could you go 4 gate 1 robo and focus on a little tech before pushing? or is this based only on early aggression? im still pretty new to sc2 and how i usually go is 4 gate 1 robo and scout with observer before i make any push to see their army comp. if i can use a warp prism to warp in units at their mineral line. and while im scouting im teching up my units but not really focusing on building up army. is this viable? if not what are the main weaknesses??? please help
@Seraphimaltair 4 gate is outdated due to patching. Blizz recognized it's effectiveness and slowed it down. The weakness to what you're going is, if you're push doesn't work, you're done. Most players are going to be expanded or expanding by the 6-7 minute mark and that's when he attacks here, but now that this build is slower, your opponent will have a 2 base economy, if not already, and will be able to outrun you in economy and suppply. Plus robo tech needs 2 bases for gas.
@Multisnoopdawg I'm not sure but it loOks like this build is very weak to early rushes, maybe try that? IM still a noob at sc2 so I might be wrong, but thus send to be based of teching in 1 base without any defence...good luck :)
@ikbenolaf2 A lot of protoss like to wall off with 1 zealot filling a small gap. A lot of times the zealot is is "holding position" he will attack any enemies that get in range of it but will not chase them, so marines can shoot at it and kill it easilly, or zerglings can go to the other side of the wall and work on the building while the zealot sits there, if the zealot moves you can micro around it and get inside the base easilly.
The only reason i dont win toss that much is because this is so easy to win with! Normal toss players never expand in order to pump units. They ither get mass void ray and lose cause they turtle to much, or they do this and win. And you might say, "ahh you lost cause your a noob in gold legue" NO!!! i have 50-60 apm avrage and i lose a player at 25 D:
@rikelf: it does... cause he cant scout in future ur base (if you decide to do something else) and he is maybe supply blocked like the caster here, after he lost is pylon.

yeah it's a bit outdated now, even a well practiced 5:40 4 gate push vs fast expand zerg probably won't work above gold league. Zergs just go mass spine crawlers now. In PvP it's kind of okay, if you can place a pylon on the ramp, provided your opponent hasn't gone any sentry heavy tech build. In PvT, it will probably lose vs a 3 rax and a 2 rax expo, but you might get lucky if he is teching, and it's a relatively small map. Regardless, it is a good build to know, but it will only get you so far
And in term of time, when do you finish teching to warpgate and transforming your gates ? I usually am able to warp units in at 5:50~ but i've heard it's possible to do much faster, how come ?
I just tried this strategy, and it works very well. But I found that if I got pushed with an early aggressive player that I couldn't get my warp gates and the pylons to make this effective. So I changed out some things by pumping out zelots right off the bat to help with that. But once I had my 4 gate warp in, it was all over. They can not produce faster then this.
new players watching this, this is indeed a very good tutorial video, but its play style of the 4 gate is definitely outdated to where protoss is standing now.
The build is slightly off, you must be able to pump your warpgate upgrade as soon as you get your cybernetics, and also the attacking timeframe is a lot slower, so for all you new protoss players, please be introduced of the play by this video, but not to copy it, there are newer tutorials for 4 gates out there, if not i'll make one.
@Jelysniper there are tons of different versions of 4gate dude he is just showing standard *12gate* 4gate..... its eco friendly and thats why he explains the ease of transitioning. SO to all the new players yes copy this build as it will be more helpful to know standard build order times first over cheesy 4gate timing pushes.
I'm not hating on you or anything man, but i felt as thought you used the 4 gate as a defensive mechanism. You also said that you should be hitting your opponent at the 7 or 8 min mark, it think thats completely wrong. Whenever i go 4gate i try to aim to hit him anywhere between the 5:50 to 6:00 min mark( that is 6 stalkers and 1 zealot know on his door at that timing) if you watch an MC 4gate you will usually never see anything later than at the 5:50 min mark.
I use dark Templars, but I'm unranked right now. I've used 4 gate and destroyed with dark Templars. It takes longer, so should I not be using them? I'm not sure.
4gate is a good start, and, if used correctly and macroed correctly, is an awesome opener with which to tech up to midgame (IE unless ur micro is bad, u can use stalkers to do a number on their economy as much as they hurt yours). I almost always use 4gate unless I'm against a T; in that case, I use my (poorly refined, but ypically succesful) colosi rush.
@ICEInterphace Clicking a lot is generally a good habit. When moving a unit to a location it's good to first issue a quick move order in the general direction, then reposition your camera and give a second more precise order. This way your unit starts moving a little sooner and gets to its location a little faster than had you first moved your camera and clicked the final destination. Constantly clicking isn't "necessary" but it will keep your fingers warm in case you need to react quickly.
and when it comes to roaches z's are better, if you micro correcly you can block roach wall with z's while a lesser number or stalkers are micro'd to snipe, just stalkers it comes to a battle of who can micro better z's give yo uthe advantage.
The 4 gate works better if you drop gateway at 11 if you time it right you drop the assim at 13 then by the time the cyber comes up you have enough to chrono warp tech as well as chrono out 2 stalkers consecutively with no lag time, puts you ahead for first strike, as well you have the minerals to push 3 z's out by 2nd pylon and into third, gives you a 45 second advantage or so
The protoss seem like a very cheap race between the pylons and their lack of having to wait for a probe to actually physically build structures is insane.
@yui4me I'm very new to SC2 but I'm going to guess that your mid/late game is weak because your macro isn't the greatest. Just my experience from most RTS games. Try looking at your expansions, build orders, and upgrades a little more. Again just a guess...
@yui4me After 3-4 waves of units that you've snt you'll want to expand and then (for zerg) go into collusi (for terran) or trans into tonnes of DT's after that Mothership and void rays
@fridtjofbda If you're doing the 3 rax vs 4 gates you should be crushing them...you can hold of a 4 gate with 2 rax FE with 1 bunker. If you're losing doing 3 rax you're doing it wrong.
@whitecow13 3 gate robo with immorts focusing the stalkers or when opponent pushes out u can sneak zealots into his/her base (from a proxy pylon dropped by ur scouting probe) and take out the probe line while opponent tries to get up ur ramp

@tyty861 You've killed them off with the 4 gate before they manage to mass air units. Even if they manage to fend it off, your robotics/stargate should already be on the way as well, which means that you got an observer/phoenix for scouting, which means that you can get the units to counter him.
@TheBillyBobGuy Depends if your teammate is going for a similar strategy. The 4 gate is not a rush, but you'll be crushed hard if you're playing against two decent opponents and you're attacking alone.
@hellbard I'd say no. I am a zerg player and i encountered this build a lot in the silvers leagues right now. This does not involve any proxy position other then pylons (which you can assume if they are playing gateway units). This is a strong and overused (IMO) build in the lower leagues, but you don't deserve the insults for using it.

@An2quamaraN Something like that. Just make sure that you scout your opponent before moving out, so that you can get an idea of the units he has. The whole point is that you can mass out units in the early/mid parts of the game faster than your opponent. As long as your opponent is not 4 gating as well. Keep in mind that if you fail, you'll be miiiiiles behind your opponent in tech. Example: If you fail to 4 gate a zerg which goes for a 14 hatch or something like that, you're screwed...

@winsause obviously the 3rd miner will automatically go to the next available mineral patch if there's two queued already. therefor it's 2 per patch cause there can't be as you can see in this fucking video aswell that they are only two miners on a patch, if there are 3 forced miners on one patch the third will sit and wait for the second one to be ready and then it will always end up in that the 3rd miner will have to wait for the second one.
@Luburium not sure how this started but u need 3 per mineral and 3 per gas for full stauration of a base. in the 4 gate u have to cut probes so its usually 2 probes at this time but thats not full saturation. Always try to get 3 workers o each mineral patch and gas
@CovanantSC2 Actually, you only need about 2.5 per mineral patch, maybe even a little less, for full saturation. Any more than that barely helps at all.
@EquInoX123 Not necessary. Some players spam in the beginning to stay warm since there really isn't anything to do. All he is really doing is selecting his probes then pushing 5 to select his nexus then repeating. I recommended just making sure you consistently build your probes perfectly without queuing.
@Evological While controlling your worker, hold shift while giving commands. Example:
I'm controlling an SCV. I want him to build a supply depot, then automatically get him to gather minerals after hes done building the Supply depot. While shift is down, I start building the supply depot, then I right click the mineral patch. Make sure that your worker is always targeted.
He found your pylons because you put them too close to the watch tower... also you use useless forcefields when you could have used a clutch guardian shield. Also, you should get your first gateway at 12, not 13 or 14.
um, im super bad/new at starcraft, when he refers to, get your gateway at 13 or 14, what does that mean, is it like, probe count? or what, sorry about the super noobish question
@ProjectD13X he means the supply, which is the number at the topright of your screen. Since you dont have military yet, it will just be the probes making the supply.
not necessarily saying this is good but i made a change to my basic 4 gate and instead of 5stalkers 4 zealots i can get an immortal out with that in the same amount of time.
@MTran0708 The video is posted 5 days after the offical release. I'd say that he was in gold/plat by then. The level of the players in those leagues at that time were of course much lower than it currently is. Nooone is perfect 5 days after the release of a game. Except Athene.. :D
BTW - 4gate strat DOES NOT work in ranked matches. This is the worst possible strat to ever use, especially if your opponent does nothing but stay on defense. This is a strat made only for supporting purposes. This is one of the most useless, and overrated strats I had ever tried. Thanks for the 8 loses in a row. For this to ever work, your opponent must suck, as demonstrated here

Yeah. Protoss definitely has some of the more annoying stuff in the game.
I'm a Z, and I absolutely hate: Colossi, VRs, Zealots, DTs, Cannons, and 4 Gates.
Almost as bad as Terran: Hellions, Banshees, Vikings, Bunker rushes.

@tyty861 You've killed them off with the 4 gate before they manage to mass air units. Even if they manage to fend it off, your robotics/stargate should already be on the way as well, which means that you got an observer/phoenix for scouting, which means that you can get the units to counter him.

@TheBillyBobGuy Depends if your teammate is going for a similar strategy. The 4 gate is not a rush, but you'll be crushed hard if you're playing against two decent opponents and you're attacking alone.

@hellbard I'd say no. I am a zerg player and i encountered this build a lot in the silvers leagues right now. This does not involve any proxy position other then pylons (which you can assume if they are playing gateway units). This is a strong and overused (IMO) build in the lower leagues, but you don't deserve the insults for using it.

@An2quamaraN Something like that. Just make sure that you scout your opponent before moving out, so that you can get an idea of the units he has. The whole point is that you can mass out units in the early/mid parts of the game faster than your opponent. As long as your opponent is not 4 gating as well. Keep in mind that if you fail, you'll be miiiiiles behind your opponent in tech. Example: If you fail to 4 gate a zerg which goes for a 14 hatch or something like that, you're screwed...

@winsause obviously the 3rd miner will automatically go to the next available mineral patch if there's two queued already. therefor it's 2 per patch cause there can't be as you can see in this fucking video aswell that they are only two miners on a patch, if there are 3 forced miners on one patch the third will sit and wait for the second one to be ready and then it will always end up in that the 3rd miner will have to wait for the second one.

@Luburium not sure how this started but u need 3 per mineral and 3 per gas for full stauration of a base. in the 4 gate u have to cut probes so its usually 2 probes at this time but thats not full saturation. Always try to get 3 workers o each mineral patch and gas

@EquInoX123 Not necessary. Some players spam in the beginning to stay warm since there really isn't anything to do. All he is really doing is selecting his probes then pushing 5 to select his nexus then repeating. I recommended just making sure you consistently build your probes perfectly without queuing.

@Evological While controlling your worker, hold shift while giving commands. Example:
I'm controlling an SCV. I want him to build a supply depot, then automatically get him to gather minerals after hes done building the Supply depot. While shift is down, I start building the supply depot, then I right click the mineral patch. Make sure that your worker is always targeted.

He found your pylons because you put them too close to the watch tower... also you use useless forcefields when you could have used a clutch guardian shield. Also, you should get your first gateway at 12, not 13 or 14.

@MTran0708 The video is posted 5 days after the offical release. I'd say that he was in gold/plat by then. The level of the players in those leagues at that time were of course much lower than it currently is. Nooone is perfect 5 days after the release of a game. Except Athene.. :D

BTW - 4gate strat DOES NOT work in ranked matches. This is the worst possible strat to ever use, especially if your opponent does nothing but stay on defense. This is a strat made only for supporting purposes. This is one of the most useless, and overrated strats I had ever tried. Thanks for the 8 loses in a row. For this to ever work, your opponent must suck, as demonstrated here
