Don't think "luck" had anything to do with it; There is a big difference between an affair and falling in love the fact that Patti and Bruce are still happy together is proof itself that it was more than just a typical "affair" they were simply meant to be together and unfortunately for Julianne Philips she was married to Bruce before he met "the one".......its all to do with timing....To say that Patti was coniving. is bitchy..if you love someone, you love them.. He said at a concert last yr he met her when she was 17.There was rumours they did have a fling in 84 but who knows. They were meant to be together. He and Julianne were seperated b4 Patti & he were pictured together so they weren't cheating. Its hard to believe he is 60 this year; now that would be a party to go to. He was only married to Julianne Philips for four years and during that time he had an affair with Patti; Patti and Bruce got married after his divorce when he was 42....theres time for us all :)

I find it ironic that this song was chosen to show Bruce and Patti's love for eachother. While it seems liks an overpowering love song, it's incredibly dark and details broken couple. Read the lyrics closely and it'll become obvious. The most telling part is the last lines, "that pact you made back when her love could save you from the bitterness"The true tone is not triumphal, it's haughntingly desperate. It's ultimate purpose is to posit free will vs. overwhelming passsion.

I found it a little weird first, too. But I actually think that what happens to the man in the song is exactly what happens with Bruce when he looks at Patti, only it's a lot softer and not so sadistic. You know, how he knows he'll never leave her, and with eyes that shine like the midnight sun. But that part with the heart of stone isn't very Patti-ish, admittedly... :)

This song was written in 1974, well before they met, and 10 years before she was hired for the Born in the USA tour.

An even better reason that it wasn't written about Patti is I feel certain it was written for me, to better understand my feelings for my partner.

When we met I had no interest in a girlfriend. But nothing, and I mean *nothing* has ever hit me so hard. It was like being run over by a train. I was, and am, obsessed, overwhelmed, sick in her absence. She was, and is, the One.

Yes, there will be some disagreement, but outright volatility? "She's the One" describes an emotionally abusive relationship that the male protagonist can't get out of. He ultimately concludes--

"That secret pact you made back when her love could save you from the bitterness"

I doubt you think that to yourself.
