  • Great Video! thanks. This was exactly what I needed to see.

  • Looks wicked haaad...

  • excellent video!

  • @hummarstra ah it's frickin easy...

  • ok, well i can see dents on the seal after you tapped it, i would have used a dead blow hammer to prevent this.

  • very Helpful video, thank you!

  • u made it look so easy. i got to change one on my dodge mini van. its going to be a pain in the ass. i dont know why my dad buys dodges. gm is the best. preferebly the 1990's chevy 1500 work trucks.

  • Another good video. Your videos always seem to have better camera angles and explanations then a lot of others I've seen on youtube.

  • @michaelsmith295 I try to make it enjoyable for your viewing.

  • Wont grease brake down that rubber seal down prematurely?, I think silicone would be better

  • @Bulgdoom As far as i know grease is just oil with a binder.

  • Why would you not clean all that shit off the engine before putting it back togerther ehh

  • Have you ever had an experience replacing one in a Diamonte?

Mine is leaking oil left and right and a friend of mine told me it could be the front seal.

  • @VikkitoriaMarie I do not have any first hand knowledge of the diamonte but the crank seal is a common place to leak.

  • great video, would this work the same for a ford transit RWD, would i have to take the rad off to get at it,thanks

  • @patharrold Not to sure about the transit will have to look into it.

  • Nice video, I plan on doing this to a 1999 mercury mystique and hope it is as easy. Thank you!

  • Is that bolt on the pully a 1:55 a reverse thread?

  • @oldsparkies No it is a normal right hand tread bolt.

  • my neighbor is selling his 2001 volvo v40 and it need's a camshaft seal. it has 180,000 miles and is selling it for $1200. Is a good idea to buy it? He has shown me reciepts for all the work he has had done to the car. thanks :) p.s. he has another vehicle and does not want to put any more money into the volvo that's why he is asking for $1200.00.

  • @BLAKPEARL69 I have never changed one on the v40.Some are easy and then some are not so easy.10 year old car with 180,000 for $1200. with oil leaks seem a bit high to me.

  • @richpin06a Thank you for your response. I appreciate it.

  • Would a bottle of AT-205 Re Seal help me out ? since i cannot lift the engine of the 1991 ford tempo. do you know of any good Re Sealers for an oil leak coming from my front main seal >?

  • @panchitotc I know of no magic in a bottle for a bad leaking seal.

  • would this trick work on @ 4 cylinder 1991 ford tempo gl ? the engine size is 2.3L..since i'm leaking oil from my Front Main Seal..i was curious if this trick would help me at all ?

  • @panchitotc On the 91 tempo the engine has to be removed from the car before this seal can be removed.

  • Do you need to remove the oil first?

  • @lordcybermercury No you do not.

  • was that seal behind the haronic balancer?

  • @BrooklynTony1 Yes it is.

  • Great video, thanks. I wanted to know if you was used a flywheel holder for keeping the motor from moving...while removing the harmonic balancer?

  • @CAMRIQPO They are a handy tool but i do not use them.

  • Thank you. helpfull why didnt u tell me you had such video lol. i have a 3.8 GM. Anyways good descriptive video, also maybe as a tip im not sure, but if the crank pulley tool had the pointy tip, then you want to ussually add a thin socked b/c ive seen when the tip can pierce the end of the thread hole, and it also balances the pulling. Great Video, Again man.

  • great work man loved the video thanks for posting keep it up bro

  • true mechanic. always down to earth, detailed, clear cut and no nonsense. love em, keep em comming.

  • Good video. Gracias!

  • How powerful is your air compressor and impact gun? I've never seen a pulley bolt come out that easy...

  • @cancer782 Normal stuff 125 max on commpressor and 380 foot-pounds of torque on wrench.

  • @richpin06a Maybe I need to get a better impact gun. My compressor is also 120 Max, the gun is 240f-p torque, and I couldn't even take out a wheel hub nut. Thanks for the info.

  • Just what I was looking for. Good start to finish cover everything I needed to do the job myself. Thank you

  • I think my Cavalier has a leak in this area, however it only happens when the car is running. Did yours leak only when the car was running?

  • what brand of puller you use?

  • @wangbungal We use a Rimac #189 puller

  • @richpin06a is that universal or only for gm?

  • @wangbungal Universal it will work on most vehicles

  • hey do you think is the samething on a 1999 dodge ram 1500...

  • @mrdodgeram1999 Most front oil seal replacements are very similar.

  • I do have to take out the timing belt to change it on my '98 Hyundai Accent right?

  • @DanielRemains Yes you do.

  • @richpin06a Yeah I realised that the answer would be Yes just after I commented haha nice video man thanks for the reply!

  • What kind of sealer do you put in the keyway?

  • @jersey1979 I put a little RTV

  • @richpin06a Thanks. What's the purpose of the sealer?

  • I didnt see it at 3 minutes in.. but YEP thats my engine.

the problem I am having IS.. I was Stalling whenever I would get over about 3500RPM then it wouldnt start..it would turn over and start to crank but stall.. then it will start and run fine... thought it was the PLUGS and wires.. changed those out.. now still doing it(except the last couple days) I took it to a Diagnostic place and it did not act up the whole time it was there but he said it COULD be(from his experience) the CSPS.

  • be careful, some manufacturers recommend NOT putting oil on the seal (Audi/VW for example). They need to "burn in" to seal correctly because they have graphite on the sealing surface.

  • @execct Thank you for letting me and everyone know that.

  • when replacing cam/crank seals do you grease them or anything, or just put em en dry? putting em in a Subaru engine

  • @RoberTastic I put some oil on the part of the seal were it comes in contact with the crankshaft

  • Pretty good video except on thing, you should not be showing them to install the harmonic balancer with the bolt and washer to hold in on. They make installers specifically for this. I had stripped the threads on a crankshaft becuse of installing it the way you did.

  • Also what did you use to stop the engine from rotating

  • @BlindedLegacy Nothing that is the benefit of using air tools.

  • do you have to drain the oil pan first? Also if you do not have air tools can you use a breaker bar?

  • @BlindedLegacy No you do not have to drain oil first and you can use hand tools to do the job.

  • Congratulation richpin06a you did a great job

  • you didnt oil it before tapping it in??

  • i love these engines, crank seals, timing cover seals and the notorius lower intake manifold gaskets. these engines have practically paid for my house alone lol. i love being a technician GM=Good Money LOL

  • i have a 2004 chevy impala....my problem was the crankshaft was leaking oil on to timing belt...then timingbelt would splash onto outer engine and smoke would comeout from under the hood....it was strange because this would only happen when id hit a red light and my ac was on.....in other words when the car was stoped and ac was on at the same time

  • I have a Mazda b2200 that leaks oil terribly i'm pretty sure it is the front main seal. Do you know how I could get to it and replace it any suggestions would be great. Thanks for the vid it helped some

  • how does this happen... i have a leak, and i feel like i could be having this exact problem on my tacoma. i cant see where the oil is leaking from but it looks like it is this spot... any helpers would be great. i blew my steering pump and my belt at the same time if that helps any.

  • @gunghoman414 If you can not tell we the leak is coming from you will have to clean the engine then look for the leak.

  • i pretty sure your not supposed to beat your crank pulley back on...

  • @tylerdford Yes you are right that is why i was lightly tapping it.

  • Please excuse my lack of knowledge but is a crank gasket the same as a crank shaft?

  • @BlaqueQueenSha The crankshaft seal and the crankshaft are two different parts.

  • Thank you for your video Rich. Don't I have to get the car to top dead center or something? Thats attached to the timing belt right? Might as well replace it while I'm at it.

  • @Subfightr No need to worry about a timing belt on the GM 3.1L engine because it does not have one.

  • @richpin06a I see, I assumed it was just a normal thing, I need to do my front main seal on my Geo metro, I was told that the timing belt is in there and then some intimidating mess about top dead center. I assumed it was the same on almost all cars. Thanks for the video though, great job, really. And thank you for replying to my comment.

  • ok i have a 1998 Ford windstar, and the guy at the shop wants to charge me 2k to replace something behind the timming cover that is leaking a gallon of oil a day,and i told him not to do it and leave it alone,so could this be whats leaking behind my timming chain cover the front oil seal or front pan gasket???

  • @brucekirk89 Sounds like it could be a crank seal.

  • that's what he is changing on the vid right??

  • @brucekirk89 i have the same problem but i have three leaks the oil pan the pully near the pistons which i fixed those two i just need to fix the crank shaft but idk how to do that and keep the timing on my car fine so that i dont screw anything else because for the top one I had help and they didnt teach me how to keep the timing right.

  • is it just me or does this guy sound EXACTLY like Peter Griffin?!

  • @crazymonkey8888 that's my day job....lol

  • @richpin06a omg <3

  • nice tut :)

  • Where can I get this pulley remover?

  • AutoZone,Advance,NAPA it is a common puller.

  • @richpin06a Yes, and you can even rent them there for free (with a deposit which you receive in-full when you return the tool) Excellent tutorial! I just changed a camshaft seal today. Very similar.

  • Need to be very careful to apply even pressure when pushing in the seal

  • Great video Rich, Thanks for doing these. I always learn a lot from them.

  • Very Very helpful.... Thank you....

  • rich, what did you do to prevent the engine from turning when you replace/install the pulley bolt? do you have a stopper on the flywheel side?

  • @seasonedtoker By using a impact wrench i did not need anything to hold the engine from turning over.

  • great video thanks

  • Awesome videos! Be careful not to nick or scratch the crank or cover when prying out old seals or leaks will occur.

  • Great video. Although, I'm surprised you didn't clean off the oil sprayed over the side of the motor before you put it back together! ;)

  • Nice vid!

  • Happy New Year richpin!

  • I only recently discovered your videos. I must say they are supurb, down to earth, quality fix it step by step videos. Your video is clear, always in focus, well lighted, and with good clear audio. The odd slip makes them real and entertaining (19/16 socket on the triten spark plug video, I'm sure you mean 9/16??) Keep 'em comming they are a great source of reference. Maybe show us a video on how you make your videos. A lot of youtubers could follow your lead on good clear how to's.

  • Did i say 19/16 that's a good one LOL

  • I recently had to replace my REAR main seal. Not quite as fun as the one you're doing.
