This episode is really deep. Where do you draw the line? Should the line bend in exceptional cases? How thin is the barrier between justice and brutality?
This is an especially important argument concerning Batman's own actions.
@BlackMaskStudios I think Bolton represents a danger Batman faces. Batman admits that he is trapped in a cycle (in Arkham City video game). The bad guys break out. Batman stops them and locks them up. Only for them to escape and the cycle continues starts all over again. He could become Bolton and make sure they never get out. But in order to do so, he'd have to deny them their humanity. That's why he doesn't kill, because he can but if he does, he'd become like them.
@janeyrevanescence12 True words and a classic dilemma when it comes to superheroes. It wouldf be soooo easy to just kill the villains, but then we wouldn't be any better than them
@123multitaskerclone scarecrow has always been an easily scared guy :P which is ironic because his main weapon is fear. He has a crippling fear of bats and is scared of other things.
Was he abusive, or was it just? I can imagine criminals that get released from Arkham being more cautious out of fear of returning to a dangerous bully like that. Then again, punishment and fear aren't always the best tools for corrective behavior.
Oh god, I had the HUGEST crush on Dr. Crane as a child (that seems to have grown along with me) and I remember being SO UPSET when I watched this. My mom would ask "What's wrong?" and she would never understand how DISTRAUGHT this made me.
OMG! This is the first time that I've ever seen"The Scarecrow"/"Prof.Jonathan Crane"ever being scared of being taken back to "Arkham"and being turned over to a demented prison guard.
I think by the end the guard changed his name to "Soon To Be Dead" he became a villain named Lock Up and Bats kicked his ass and sent him to... yes, Arkham, where the inmates will show him their appreciation for the way he treated them.
Scarecrow... I would give him a Hug =) But I really miss this serie.. (I really don't like the look that scarecrow got in another season... ) WORSHIP HIM FOOLS WORSHIP HIM!!
@Joecbg100 really? could've sworn he was the warden who helps quinn and the joker to move around in arkham...the one who is killed by the joker and then got a sign with "dead end"
@AkatsukiGirlNumberOn Nope sorry, that officer was Frank Boyles, the one with the scar on his eye and the flask who kidnapped Gordon, not Lyle Bolton. Also, kinda OT, but where is Dr. Jeremiah Arkham in those games????
This scene shows that Lock-Up's methods work: the Scarecrow admits he wasn't going back to crime. But, then, I suppose deep down inside Bats really does want the Joker breaking out of Arkham every few months and killing a dozen innocent people each time he does. It gives the Batman job security.
That's why i like The Shadow. Don't send the super-crooks to jail: just shoot them.
@Carandini Batman believes in justice-he therefore does not take it on himself to act as the judge, jury, and executioner of others. Even if he has to put the same criminals away time after time, he will never lower himself to that level.
@dkupke Much as I like Batman - how many innocent people does the Joker have to kill before he understands that the only way to protect people is to put down the clown? Sorry, the 'moral high ground' is just an excuse for being too cowardly to do what needs doing. And I'd say Bats believes in law, not justice. Very different things.
not really. it'd be easier if someone else killed him. batman knows his limits. he's too strong and prideful. joker wants batman to kill him he knows just as well as batman that if batman kills then he won't turn back. it'll make him no different than the joker. they're both psychos with issues, on good and one evil. that's why joker is batman's main top list nemesis
@Carandini Your argument has some validity, but then again, why have the people of Gotham not sentenced The Joker to the gas chamber yet? Batman says in this episode that he was "born to fight" Lockup's vision of order-because Bolton's mind does not represent order or justice, but rather cruelty and viciousness, every bit as bad as the criminals Batman protects people against. He refuses to lower himself to that level.
@dkupke The reason behind the lack of executions could me multiple-fold. One, maybe Gotham's in a state where the death sentence is illegal? Or perhaps people like the Joker (NOTABLY the Joker) have certain immunities to various toxins and actually KILLING him is a tricky proposition. Then there's the probability that they simply escape before the executions can take place because it typically takes MONTHS for due process to work in that case. Too many questions, Mr. Wayne.
@ThyDungeonman2 The problem is that they have been classified as criminally insane and it's illegal to institute the death penalty on those who are deemed insane by the courts.
"I won't let you or the people of Gotham down again Batman." Right Mr. Bolton, totally *cough, cough* Batman *cough* Arkham Asylum *cough*
