My grandma bought me this VHS of Savannah Smiles when i was little, i cried watching this movie and i love the name Savannah, i would name my second daughter that name if i had one.
I was just reading that Mark Miller, who plays Alvie, wrote this story and the screenplay and is married to Barbara Stanger who played Savannah's mom! Interesting stuff!
I loved this movie when I was a kid! And also I think she was in an episode of Fairy Tale Theatre with Ricky Schroeder, Hansel & Gretel. She was a great little actress and it's sad that she died. I don't know what happened to her.
lobstergirl3000... there isnt always a moral in stories. in fact, the greatest works of literature lack a moral because the authors understand that morality is an arbitrary sytem of values based on a particular civilizations needs. this particular story is very much like (and probably based on) the o.henry short story, ransom of red chief.

Yeah, I think at the time they made it, it was probably alright. That's what I love, that kids below a certain age haven't developed any prejudices as to who they'll hang out with. I love that. But at the same time, it's a lot more dangerous these days to give kids the impression that they can trust any random stranger.

i agree 100%
when i was young I was able to hang wit whoever because my mother knew a lot of people in the neighborhood, but today you have people you don't know that will snatch kids and put them up on the internet.
Anyway, those days were awesome were as a 7, 8, 9, 20 yr old you can walk 1/4 of a mile and come back home safe.
What I don't get is, if you watch her in certain movies, like Savannah Smiles, she's a great little actress and a total character. In the movie Nightmares she's almost got that Dakota Fanning old soul kind of quality- like she's got 50 years of wisdom, but she's only five? But, I've seen her on other stuff, like the Golden Girls episode she was on, and her acting was bad. It's like she wasn't trying anymore. I know at some point after this movie her parents divorced, so maybe that's why?
During her teen years, she struggled with an addiction to heroin, and at the time of her death, was attempting to stay clean while living in Los Angeles.
She died May 18, 1997 of an accidental overdose of alcohol and drugs. She was 21 years old.
I'm named after this movie :)

The one problem I have with this movie is that the moral of the story is, if you're a 4-year old kid, it's okay to trust escaped convicts.
lobstergirl3000 3 years ago
but kids are trusting, sometimes a stranger will do fine if your own family is no good.
i vaguely remember this movie. i do remember her sneaking in the of their car and they not knowing what to do with her.
When I was a kid I liked this movie. I think I was 4, 5, or 6 when this was on cable.

correction 10 not 20 yr. old lol.
(i would think any stranger would be "random", but sometimes you never know strangers treated me better than many, but i get the major point.)

@lobstergirl3000 If she was a Mormon kid, that would have been quite a blow. I was the same way after my parents divorced.
This was filmed in Mormon country, but was her family Mormon?
