but doesnt that still let you push the damn shank through? i mean, instead of quick stabs, they now do 1-2 well placed pushes, through the damn expensive fancy uniform O_O
with Kevlar gloves, idk about the syringe thing. I was talking to my training teacher and he recommended the Kevlar gloves. said he has never been poked by a needle in his time. retired 2 years ago
@JONT3pro This won't protect the wearer from bruises (i.e. internal bleeding) and broken bones etc. So internal injury is still a concern. But the impact will be distributed over a much larger area compared to the original point of entry, that may make a difference between life and death.
This is quite an interesting innovation! But I'm sure it will be costly for taxpayers, and I doubt it deters criminals as much as they say, as the criminals will just use the shivs on a more exposed area of the body, like say, a guard's throat or head for instance.
Is this the same formula that the British company is working on, BAE?
It seems the British have devised the concept and first working versions of 'Liquid Armour', but BAE never intended it to stop knifes, only bullets, which was proven to be more effective than pure Kevlar. I wonder if the Brits have shared the knowledge with the US, and the US has engineered a knife proof version to it.
See, thats why this alliance is good, both benefit from it heh
@XIOUH Don't know the answer to your questions. But BAE does not only work for the
British government. There is a huge division of BAE in Silicon Valley. So I don't think those US citizens working for BAE on US soil is developing projecst for British government. I am sure some BAE divisions in Britain will do secret military projects by their own Brits only teams.
@cplai Ah sorry, I didn't mean the US was working on it for the British ^_^ I just meant I'd read somewhere the British division of BAE developed some form of 'Liquid Armour'. I'd assumed the information had been shared with the US, but you've cleared that up :)
(I didn't know BAE was in both countries. My mistake)
@XIOUH If you go to maps dot google dot com and then search for "BAE Systems, San Jose, CA", you will see that they have multiple campuses in Silicon valley. Those employees are US citizens. It is smart to tap onto the talents in one of the most brainiac locations in the world. But I would think any secret weapons developed for 007 would be developed exclusively in BAE's homeland.
I like it when they start talking about new stuff for safety but then say, ''you MAY have the answer". That ''May" is a word that, in real world, can mean from months to years and also depend on budgets and other shit. LOL They MAY get it. We MAY have it. We MAY achieve it. Yeah, I MAY take a dump soon too. -_-
@Theotherone12321 they are, well most. levels 2 and 3 are just kevlar, these offer little to no resistance to say a rifle bullet (even subsonic) due to the pointy-ness but round bullets (most all pistol rounds) are stopped. thats why the military/swat use ceramic and steel plates.
it make stop the weapon from passing through, but it could still cause blunt force or with enough force could pierce the skin. even though anything is better than taking a shank
Remember the beginning shield practice in the movie "Dune", when Gurney Haleck tells Paul "the slow blade penetrates the shield"? Way ahead of it's time.... :)
I made a form of this 25 years ago, using corn starch, the problem was then holding it in suspension, and bonding it to a material!
kevlar was not available in the 1980, when i had the idea after watching a childrens british tv program, (how do they do that) they tried to punch things through corn starch soloution.
I just want to comment on the bow section. They say "steel tipped hunting arrow". That's a field tip... NOT for hunting. That's for shooting at targets for practice, so you don't have to ruin your hunting tips. Hunting tips have razor blades on them and come to a point... field tips are single-points that you'd have a difficult time killing almost anything with.
This is truly amazing, how many lives we can save. Liked the part where it can be used for gloves to avoid getting hurt by needles or similar, would be great if you works as a garbageman, as a police or even at a hospital. I might have to learn more about this now :)
they always used a sturdy wood basis, i would like to see it if it was on ballistics gelatin. what would be the effect on the gelatin in that arrow test?
INSTEAD OF THE GOVERNMENT TAXING US THE RIDICULOUS AMOUNT NOW and spending our cash on stupid crap they need to help out the dam community and this can help ALOT especially OVERSEAS
Not that this is a real world test but I want to see him use a broad-head arrow instead! Also what if you use a dagger and push slowly rather than a fast stab?
so what would happen if they shot an arrow at kevlar body armor - instead of one thin sheet? THEN do the same thing with several layers of kevlar with STF! :D
ps. make an "updated" version so the abreviation is STFU!!

Infact you wouldnt get personal injury when considering that the impact distribution of dragon skin would stop the pressure that would cause inter injury, when in combination with liquid armors ability to keep fabric togethor.
man I love this new Tech.. I wonder if they place in front the type of cloth that breaks bullet apart and distribute the force of impact wider, that way you wouldn't get serious internal injury.. (Just my Idea)
THAT WOULD HURT LIKE SHIT!!!! you would have internal bleeding and shit a huge ass bruise.. but yeah at least it would not pierce ur stomach or what ever...
so why is military grade body armor not good enough for cops? They need to be free to react in emergencies? Since when did cops get into combat that is more intense than military personnel, or get in more dire emergencies? If its good enough for Military it should be good enough for cops. I think they cant handle carrying the extra weight. too many donuts :O
Unless the guards wear this to the point of looking like ninjas. This is completely useless for this purpose. Once the attacker knows about this, he'll just aim for the head and neck. That's no rocket science.
@Termi87ITA How more fatal than being stabbed in the neck or the head for that matter? You need to know how the prison environment works, you obviously don't know. Inmates have waaay to much time in their hands to come up with ways of defeating the system. If they want to surprise a guard by the time he reacts, he'll have 3 inches of that shank in his neck.
So why not just stab a person wearing this stuff a little more slowly? It's non-newtonic; All you have to do is push the blade with a little less force to begin with.
This, "Liquid Armor", is composed of polyethylene glycol and silica(glass) particles. The only drawback is, polyethylene glycol is water soluble so, if you sweat excessively or if it rains while you're wearing this, "Liquid Armor treated material", it weakens substantially. Also, if you wash the treated material is loses its strength. The regular ballistics armor material has to be repeatedly treated with the, "liquid armor". Unless the engineers create a hydrophobic version of liquid armor.
@GTMustangRider No actually any clothing would use a barrier material to prevent any contact from both body, and exterior moisture. Any field clothing could have replaceable barrier material that is washable, while the kevlar/sheer thickening barrier layer would remain un-adulterated by washing.
!Ridiculous! This is not a hunting arrow tip - this is a training tip meant only for penetrating cork targets.
