i am just discovering the work of latry. and, quite frankly, the guy is a f*£%ing genius! i will have to get hold of his complete works of messiaen. i'm not sure thw ife will want me blasting it out at full volume however. into the garden with a beer and my ipod on a sunny afternoon i think!
There are many opinions concerning the various alterations of the great organ of Notre Dame, but one of the greatest changes that many lament is the "electrocution" of the mighty C-C in the 60's. It is said that the old key action was particularly fine. It is lost forever now as even a "restoration" could not recover the original unique feel of C-C. Tonal changes are a whole 'nother can of beans!
Actually they kept the original console in 1963, as it is now in the organ loft ! As it is done usually in Europe they kept the slider chests while ''electrocuting'' so with new Barkers I believe it would be possible getting back the original 1868 CC console in function !
Ah yes, it is possible, but key action is an art as much or more than a science and regaining the original feel would/will be quite an accomplishment. It goes beyond simply hooking up the old chests to the old console. Since St. Sulpice exists as a "restored" version of a large CC, there may not be strong enough rationale to give up the computer-driven action (that cost so much and which had such a difficult start-up). It seems to work now and it certainly allows great registration freedom.
If done right, electronic consoles can feel great. Probably my favorite example (touch-wise, anyway) is the Marshall and Ogletree at Trinity Wall Street. Yes, it's a toaster, and really needs to be replaced by a real organ, but the key action is very good. On a side note, I wonder what this organ would be like if Vierne had Gonzalez do the 1932 rebuild (like Vierne wanted) instead of the remains of Cavaille-Colle...
Die Franzosen sind einfach Spitze im Improvisieren auf der Orgel !

@brianwilson49 The complete organ works with Messiaen by Latry is fantastic. I highly recommend it.

The great Cavaillé-Coll organ groaning, roaring, shrieking, bellowing and thundering - in brief: Latry at the summit of his art !

en voilà une très jolie improvisation ! Olivier latry est un merveilleux exemple de l'école d'orgue française.
son collègue à l'harmonie devrait venir plus souvent l'écouter, cela lui donnerait quelques idées !

The organ still sounds impressive, but it lost her charme through the 1990-restauration.

I wish they'd get those Boisseau chamades back to where they were: too tame now, we need more venom down the nave to scare the punters!

Your comment is hilarious!

I agree! The chamades had much more sizzle during the Cochereau years. But still, this organ remains my favorite on earth.

This would be a great project for the 21st century: Barkers and the original CC-console at Notre-Dame!
