I love hearing those original Mets Broadcast Voices of Bob Murphy, Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner. The homers that Murphy called in the first inning of that wonderful night were exuberant and marvelous. Of course, back then, when Murph was younger and in his 40s (44 in 1969), he was more excitable, but he always CONTROLLED THAT EXCITEMENT! It's sad that he and Lindsey Nelson are no longer around. Still, they were never be forgotten! Neither will 1969! I became a sportscaster because of them!
The Retro, the man on deck after the game ending double play that Joe Torre hit into is none other than then Cardinal Catcher and former Mets and Yankees Broadcaster and now a telecaster for Fox's MLB Telecasts, Tim McCarver. Tim was one of the best catchers in the major leagues then and would be successful with the Phillies, Expos and Red Sox as well.
Joe Torre hit into that double play and that is trivia enough, but here's another trivia question. Can you guess who was the on deck batter when Torre ended the game?
@tishhead Harrelson deserved it! Rose also blackened Wayne Garrett's eye for kicking him in the back during that same fight... If not for Bench restraining Rose, the whole Met's infield would have wound up on the disabled list.
@FiberMania gee, he only outweighed garrett by about 30 pounds instead of the 50 pounds he outweighed harrelson by. what a macho dude. speaking of deserving it, i think rose earned his rewards: a lifetime ban from baseball and prison time.
Those New York Mets fans would throw bottles, batteries, anything they could get their hands on at visiting players. They were nothing but wild animals without conscience or class. They knew nothing about baseball either. I was especially glad to watch Pete Rose kick Bud Harrelson's ass at second base in the '73 NLCS then promptly hit a game winning home run off Harry Parker in game 4.
Yankee fans had a little more class, but not much. CINCINNATI REDS '75 '76 WORLD CHAMPS.. team of the '70s
I would love to see Fred Wilpon watch this video and NOT be like M. Donald Grant again. This celebration and night will NEVER duplicate itself ever again, but the feeling that myself and as well as everyone experienced that night on September 24, 1969 was MATCHLESS! I want to experience the same kind of feeling at Citi Field that I did on that marvelous night as a 10 year old in '69, even though I watched on WOR-TV. I can imagine what it had to be like all over NYC that night!
After all these years it's still one of the best lockeroom celebrations despite the numerious Yankee Championships.I asked a Yankee fan and he said ,"Of course the Mets went crazy they don't win as remotely as often as my Yanks.
I wish the Mets were like this now, but our time will come...and damn it, they might be Bums but they're our Bums--and always Amazin'!
From a fan who's never been to New York, lived in California his whole life and grew up idolizing Mike Piazza and the Mets, scrounging through newspaper accounts and radio and treating the occaisonal Dodgers-Mets TV game with Vin Scully as the hbighlight of the season short of the series...
wow!!! Thank you so much...so great to hear Gil Hodges voice!..these guys were pretty special...a total team effort....time for WOR to break out the archives!
Actually. night games began at 8pm. Since this was the last home game of the year, the starting time was moved to 7pm. (It also was a Wednesday night.) That's why, as an 11 year old, I was able to watch the whole game, the locker room celebration, and Kiners Korner that followed.
@indy66 I couldn't have said it any better. I'm with you on that. I don't care how many world series they win; they are not the team that I loved back then. To me, they are just imposters who happen to be wearing a Mets uniform. To hell with the "Pseudo-Mets." In fact, I've had it with the major leagues nowadays altogether, with the greed. I'll leave it to the Yuppies to go to Mets games.
Seaver just KILLS me... It's all so sweet and wonderful... and I remember From the Mets with Love too, from the 80's... check SNY now- many Winik brothers films are finally being used after years of being forgotten, thanks to fans shaming Wilpon into understanding METS history and not bogus Dodgerdom.
Thanks for posting this! I vivdly remember watching these post-game interviews as part of a Mets' season retrospective in the fall of 1969 on KHJ-TV in Los Angeles ( WOR-TV's sister station at the time; incidentally -- note the "New York 9" logo on Lindsey's microphone ). I hope someone told the Mets to be careful when celebrating...at 9:08, someone nearly hit Tom Seaver in the eye with a cork!!
Thanks so much for this great memory. I was 9 in 1969 went to met games since 65. My dad got his hands on two tickets for game 4 droped my brother and I off at shea, he then went to lums chinese resturant in flushing to watch from the bar tv.
Thanks dad for letting us go (since he had two boys and only two tickets) Thanks greg for the great memories "lets go mets".
At 4:09 is my hero, Gil Hodges. He deserves to be in the HOF and one day he will be. I stayed up past my 3rd grade bedtime to watch this miracle and stayed home 'sick' to watch the W.S.
I remember "From the Mets with Love". They showed this after Game 2 of the 1969 National League Championship Series when the Mets beat the Braves, 11-6 in Atlanta. I don't remember who sung the song, but "The Impossible Dream" was sung! They had a collage of stuff from 1969. The Mets-Cubs Series in July was mentioned. I thought this was lost forever.
Someone must have the master of this tape - I assume WWOR - Channel 9. It was around in the mid 1980s. I assume Channel 9 has other stuff around too, like the 1st Mets telecast from spring training.
tatkopitwmf got it right - a channel 9 special called "To Mets With Love" that I believe was aired before the LCS. There is some video footage of the 1969 LCS; the special narrated by Tim Robbins contained clips from Game 3. It's the first time I remember seeing any. No idea how much there is. The only video footage I've seen from the 73 NLCS is the Rose-Harrelson brawl and a b/w clip of players pleading with fans to stop throwing junk a Rose. There is video game footage of 1973 WS from Shea
Wow! I can't believe you had this. This is never seen. I remember it well and it's amazing to watch. the interviews are great. You appreciate the great Met Announcers of Bob Murphy, Lindsay Nelson and Ralph Kiner. This celebration started it all for that great team and thanks for posting this.
Not too serendipitous, but that's none other than Joe Torre grounding into the double play at 1:25. He, of course, would later manage the Mets. Davey Johnson, who made the last out of the '69 World Series would go on to manage the Mets. Both Torre and Johnson won Championships in New York,

Yeah, Fibermania. You left out one little detail. The Mets beat the Reds in that playoff series.
Must have slipped your mind.

Rose breaks up double play at second base... Harrelson elbows Rose and calls him "cock*ucker".... In rapid fashion it's Rose over Harrelson TKO.
