  • Amazing how New York City's subway-elevated cars were larger than Chicago's but their tiny whistles made them sound smaller.

  • @nyshortline Now it's reversed.

We run a max. of 8 car trains (4 married pairs) 6 cars on express trains, and 4 on weekends and nights.

As far as I know NYCTA runs 10 cars max. right?

in any case you guys have larger sounding horns on your trains and we have VERY compressed air whistles which sound like they should be used in nothing else but switching duty.

  • @Amtrak1194 Oh my goodness!!! Whose bright idea was that to start using tiny air whistles? I thought you guys had WABCO AA-2 horns on all your equipment.

  • @nyshortline I WISH!!!

No it's not really an affective warning system.

but our equipment is just getting updated. We currently run equipment from the early-mid 90's and our newest trains have more seating room and operate at higher speeds than our current stock (60 mph instead of 55). I am really not sure but I think they might have WABCO's.

What is the max. speed you guys run at in NYC? and do you have expressway median tracks?

our 2 most heavily traveled lines run in expressway medians at 55.

  • @Amtrak1194 Don't let my handle fool you, I actually live just outside Philadelphia. But I've been told by NYCTA employees that their top speed there is only about 40 MPH. Though beleive it or not their "Nostalgia Train" which is the train of R1-R9's, has reached 50 MPH while in holiday service. But in Philly I've ridden both the Blue and Orange Line trains at 55-60 MPH.

  • @nyshortline The Orange Line trains have WABCO AA-2 air horns while the Blue Line cars have 3-chime air whistles that when they don't go sour, sound a lot like the old Hancock air whistles. The only expressway running we have lasts about a mile on I-95 near the waterfront on the Blue Line.

  • @nyshortline On the elevated section (the loop) where all but two of our lines run max speed is 35 then at ground level max is 45 and in the subway we run a 58 mph and on the expressway lines max speed is also 58

  • @Amtrak1194 How about on the stretch from Howard down to the Loop, what's the speed there? Also what's the speed on the Skokie Swift? Thanks.

  • Wow, I didn't think CTA ever did excursions like this!

  • I like how the whistle echoes around the skyscrapers downtown. Seems to me Chicago is the only city that has an elevated right in the heart of downtown.

  • Awesome video! Like ibilldavis wrote, thanks for uploading this.

  • Thanks Tony. Good job.
