@AfghanHazar What always works for me when this happens is 1) reset iPod [push the menu and center button down for 10 seconds] or 2) Find a different USB cable than the one you have. The newer, more thin USB's work better than the older ones.

The hard drive is probably dead, the iPod can't load the "advanced" interface that is stored on the hard drive so it loads the "basic" interface stored in firmware (same from the iPods older than iPod Photo) and gives error

I had that, it was easy to fix, press play/pause and middle button at the same time like 6 seconds and then it goes to disk mode. From there you can restore ur iPod easily with iTunes. (dont ever use winamp for music transfer, I got that with it)
