My dad special ordered a 1969 Corvette L88 w/T400 in feb. 1969. The car is still sitting in his garage 42 years later w/66K on it. Nobody changed the transmission. It came w/aT-400. Case closed.
@trainwreck72 That is absolutely devastating! I guess that's the risk you take when you have something that precious - the risk of losing it and dealing with feeling devastated.
L-88.....underrated at 435 Hp.......more like 560....just imagine if those cars had a 5th gear like so many European cars of the day....theoretical top speed of one of those, including the ZL-1 was 190mph....back in the day!! Try to find one nowadays....VERY expensive!!
@Vettejocke Well, i do believe the L88 vette was designed as a circuit/endurance racer originally, not a drag car, while the ZL-1 was designed for Super Stock drag ... so pulling tens on stock springs is probably the reason for the dramatic front lift and ass sag especially if he put lower gears in the rear.

@Vettejocke Well, I do believe the L88 option was designed for endurance racing and not drag as such the ZL-1 was for the Super Stock class. So pulling 10's on stock springs is probably the reason for the dramatic front lift and ass sag, but you could be right.
@Vettejocke Its like that for weight transfer purposes. This class is not allowed to run slicks. So they must do every thing possible to the suspension to get it to hook.
@yumikuchki It's also funny that it has taken what 40 years for us to get back where we were power and acceleration wise with the golden age of muscle. Oil Crisis was the death of GM's creme de la creme 427 solid lifter
I recently ordered my own L88 cam. I now have a 454 with 2 holley 750cfm carburetors, Edelbrock cylinder heads, and now the L88 cam. My 1980 vette is a bat out of hell! I love it. Now all I need to do is get some better tires...
The ZL-1 VETTE ran in the 10@130.the L-88 VETTE also ran 10 with slick, the hemi guys couldn't compete on the street because hemi fouled spark badly, now on the strip the could compete.
It's funny how MoPar boys says nothing could come close to their HEMI Dart, but apperantly, that weren't true, and this is ''just'' an stock appearing L88 Vette´, imagine how fast the ZL1 Vette's E.T's would be.
Fiberglas body, convertible removable hardtop(for more added aerodynamic), ZL1 whole-alu 427 engine with an expected power over the 550-range minimum, with a really sharp cam, and note, this is an stock engine, if well adjusted together, it beats stock street-Hemis, damn fast Vette´
damn thats nice , there were only a few made with the auto,s . I suppose they are SUPER RARE now . Did the factory modify the TH400,s for these cars ?
Not really, as the 400 is a tough unit...starting with just 50 L78 Novas in 1968 [COPO # 9738], Chevrolet began using the 400THM behind the solid lifter big blocks as a regular production option in 1969...they were pretty much standard fare 400 turbos, but had a different governor [higher shift points] and a higher stall converter [2200rpms]. What took them so long to allow the 400THM for use in the HOT big blocks is beyond me, as Chrysler was killing them at the track in the automatic classes.
@Chevyls6 I have often wondered about the transmissions. The case with my 71 Formula was that when it went from 14.5s to 13.5s the shift from 2 to 3 was prolonged. Enough to where I wonder how long that's going to last. I don't know if I need a shift kit or if tolerances are wrong. The car has only 55K on it and started (with me) at 42K. It was slow to 3rd to start with but alot worse as power increases. 2nd is always consistant but not all that responsive to my shift.
@Chevyls6 They also had the Olds 442 mod or something similar where some of the checkballs are omitted for firmer shifts. I heard that since they idled at 1,000-1,100 rpms when you put them in gear they'd chirp the tires... But yeah, standard TH400 with a looser converter and improved shift timing.
Headers, sidepipes, Arias Hemi heads, maybe a supercharger kit, 4-5 speed manuall, red, black or Lemans Blue Metallic paint, black leather seats, power brakes/steering with disk brakes on all wheels, mmm dreaming :)
I would think that they could. The car must only weigh about 3100lbs, and thats pretty much what the new vettes weigh. You figure, back then these vehicles did not have the "creature comforts" that the new ones have so there wasnt much holding that power back. Now, thankfully, they have the technology to have the best of both worlds.
As I said above, starting in 1969, the Turbo 400 automatic transmission *was* available behind the solid lifter big blocks, which included the L88 Corvettes [of which *17* L88/400thm 'Vettes were built].
But, GerryK, if you're saying they never built them, then you might wanna "enlighten" the poor folks who run the Russo & Steele collector car auction, as they list a '69 L88/400THM Corvette on their site:

But L88's never came with automatics.

GerryK, starting in 1969 the Turbo 400 automatic trans was available behind all solid lifter big blocks, which included the L88 in the Corvette.
