I think it's a shame and ironically, a bit sick, that so many seem to be reading something sinister into the theme of an innocent kids tv show. I know when I was a child watching this, the line "He's my friend and a whole lot more, shows me a world I never saw before" seemed perfectly fine and innocent to me. And it still does now. This was a charming, innocent kids' show, and I don't know why some sickos have to try and spoil our great memories of such a wonderful show. :(
