the interesting thing is the turtle still thinks he's biting the victim once something is in his mouth (the tool), so the researcher still has his other hand close to the turtles mouth. but if you ask me, i think his other hand got bit when the video cut off, loool.
This is why you leave snapping turtles alone in their water habitat. They will never harm people in this habitat unprovoked. Swim right by, wouldn't know were there. Mess with them and they'll take a finger or toe. This guy got really lucky. If you find one catching Zs in your boat, get some tough work gloves, stay right away from the business end, grab the tail both hands, lift the whole turtle up (odds are female) and drop overboard.
I was scared to watch this video. That turtle is brutal! And the researcher is pretty hardcore. I definitely would've been blubbering. Dude is lucky he didn't lose his fingers.
@TheMysteryman334 I been shot before and I didn't yell scream or panic but if that turtle woulda bit my hand like that I could see myself hollering...
@HardCoreDancing1 I'd imagine he'd have to be pretty chill, flinching/freaking out would probably just make the wound worse. I know for sure that if one of those things ever bit me I'd probably lose my finger panicking.
I tripped over one of these when I was walking near a lake with my friend when I was young. I think I ran home and told my mom I saw bowser by the lake.
I use to pick up baby turtles with my hand until I found out they have long necks that can extend out and bite you with no problem. I have never been bitten by one but I will never pick one up again and I will keep my distance from them too.
I grew up in south Fla. and i used to catch these kind of turtles but they were 3 or 4 times as big.The biggest one i've ever caught was as big as a man-hole cover and had to weigh over 30lbs. i could barely pick it up!
@donny29dsm In south Florida you did not have this species. You had some really large common snapping turtles. Those grow pretty large in southern Florida. I've seen them huge dead on the road on the FL turnpike. But this alligator snapping turtle goes no further south then the Suwannee River of Northern Florida. So you were encountering another species.
@norton2282 Not very large, not very heavy, and from the details related to the video you can assume it's Missouri and I can confirm for you that it was Missouri, a very rare animal in Missouri, only found in a few bodies of water in Southern Missouri. I would be willing to bet Missouri has less then 1000 wild alligator snapping turtles, maybe only 500. If most of the habitat had not been drained in the 1920's and 1930's there might have been 500,000.
Why do wildlife researchers feel the need to anthropomorphize animals with comments like " he doesn't want to attack" or " the only reason he wants to bite is because I've got him tangled in a net".
Animals are animals, they do what they do. Only the higher order animals have what we might describe as emotions.
That turtle would have bit his finger regardless of the situation.
You've got to be more careful handling these Microwave Snapping Tortoises. They make lousy pets, for they neither give, nor respond to affection. Attempts to cuddle them virtually always result in lost appendages.
Good job, took that bite like a pro, calmly extricated his finger out of the turtles mouth, must have hurt but he was more concerned about the well being of the animal he's studying
@DarkSaphire2002 Why lucky? He stayed perfectly calm and freed his finger without hurting the turtle. Sounds like a professional (though he did got bitten, haha).
"he only wants to bite me because i've got him tangled up in the net. For the most part we've got nothing to worry about" haha. Then you get bitten. I think he wants to bite you because he wants to eat you lol
and the super special tool the man used was a POCKET KNIFE! i know what your thinking .. its really hard to find one of those special tools haha. but seriously way to stay cool
"For the most part, they're nothing to worry about" You're saying that about the LARGEST freshwater turtle that has a bite of 1500 pounds per sq. inch. Yeah, just enough to probably take an arm off when full grown.
I've seen big ones caught twice, they are cool looking creatures...doesnt pay to get to comfortable around any wild animal, they are scared and want their freedom...
You should NEVER underestimate how fast these big buggers will move when they do. They may be turtles, but there's a reason they're called "snapping" turtles... that head just shoots out and closes those jaws (like oversized nail clippers) on any fish which swims into reach.
His mistake was holding the turtle's mouth. You NEVER do that because as you saw, it can just lash out and bite as soon as you let go. You should ONLY hold the front and back of the shell and keep the animal away from you body. Best to step back when you put it down also.
its like a pitbull that wont let go you use a breaking stick a peice of wood thats tappered at the end. you put it in its back teeth and it prevents the dog from biting down or keeping its hold. its a tool to seperate two pitbulls in a fight. its quicker and it safer for the dogs, usually a hammer handle thats filed down to a tapper point at the end.
Used to shoot them with bow & arrow back in Arkansas. Granny & Aunt Lee would make up a stew outta them that the old folks loved. Not us kids. LOL That was 50 years ago and now I am the old folks. I still wouldn't touch it.
Why didn't he put a stick out there for the turtle to clamp down on , and then take the turtle out of the net? They don't want to unclamp their jaws when they bite down.
i would kill that animal if it happened to me. I would see to it that it experiences more pain. Watch Cannibal Holocaust and see what they did to the turtle similar to this.
i dont like snappersXD ive handled many kinda of turtle and never once even had one try and bite me.....why the hell would you want a snapper as a pet
