You won't believe this, but I did play the SM64 beta many many years ago. I remember being inside the castle at 2:07. I played the beta when Sears had video games inside the boy's clothes area. I can't believe I'm finally seeing the castle room again.

@Yuriofwind I found a book at my library about the SNES beta, apparantly, it was to use polygons for it's spritesheets, and hubworld castle, which is where super mario RPG's music originated. IT would use mode 7 for ground textures, however, due to limitations, they decided to move hardware, and the beta ROM is stored in a floppy somewhere, its wherabouts, are unknown.

It's not surprising that the beta looked better. It was pushing the N64 to its limit and trying to see what it could do. Betas often look better than what developers can actually do.

3 best Mario games. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64. Sunshine was junk. The paper Mario's were decent. I havent tried any of the galaxy games.

According to Wikipedia, Miyamoto originally wanted SM64 to have up to 40 courses (not including bonus levels)? But only 15 would fit. 32 were allegedly actually created, and I would give anything to see the other 18 (remember that #15 is the castle secret stars, so it doesn't count). SM64 is already considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time. And that's with less than half the levels. Can you even imagine how legendary this game would've been if it had been complete?!

I miss these days. I thought the pre launch of the n64 was the most exciting time ever. I was 8-9 years old in 1995-1996 and got the Playstation and n64 for each of those Christmas'. I remember watching beta footage like this in awe at places like Sears or Toys R Us at the Holyoke Mall. I'll never forget my first time ever getting to play Mario 64 at an ancient Toy Works (before K.B. Toys bought them) and playing the footrace with Koopa. I'll never forget those days

@itsdavideo I think it's because betas always have the earliest, most ambitous ideas. As development goes on some ideas are dropped due to time constraints, budget constrainst, "better" ideas or the idea itself being too ambitous to be implemented.
