I personally like magical girl shows that have dark parts like Madoka Magica and Magical girl Lyrical Nanoha. Some others like Precure just have too many episodes that are easy to predict so it bores me. Shugo Chara is okay...it has too many "fillers" but the comedy makes up for it :)

In terms of historical influence Sailor moon, CCS, Nanaha, and Precure are probably the most significant ones. Maybe we can add Madoka after 2011 but we have yet to see its influence on the genre.

I would like to point out that before Sailor Moon magical girls didn't use their powers to fight crime and evil,but just for pure adventure(and misadventures :P).

Cutey Honey however was for boys and she was an android,not a magical girl,except for in Cutey Honey Flash where she is just like a Salior Moon figuire.

Tokyo Mew Mew was fun, along with the rest of the magical girl anime that I've watched...for a while. But now that Puella Magi Madoka Magica is out, it's just so "meh" in comparison. (Forgive me if it comes out a little rude.)

Cyberteam in Akihabara:A mix of magical girl,mecha,and moe anime.Sadly,they're only 26 ep.

Majokko Megu Chan:just like Cutey Honey and Majokko Tickle,from the same time too

Sailor V:a manga made by the same creator of SM,she's very similar to Salior Venus(same Earth name and pet cat)

Probably my favorite is Ojamajo Doremi. It has girls using magic for things other than fighting evil and it's hilarious! Also, it's one of the few anime I got my brother into, so it gets bonus points!
