Can it compete with a drummer with any semblance of a clean tone? Also, can it go from shimmery to crunch (listen to The Who's "Overture" Live at Leeds version to see what I mean) with out changing volume levels so much as to disrupt the song? I really love how dynamic that HIWATT is, but those (even copies) are out of my price and volume range.
@VelhosNovos ah, you should have said that... No clue how the cab weighs either. It was a lot lighter than a 4x12, but it didn't have the sound I wanted. It sounded kinda dead. I think it was the speakers. With 4 celestion blues/silvers it'd sound awesome.
@scantron81 I wanted to LOVE that cab, but I couldn't get into it. Don't remember the dimensions, just google " 1965B 4x10" and you'll learn more about it.
@coubiakb With a tele it breaks up earlier than a VOX AC30 (or 15 for that matter). I felt that this amp sounded a lot better with humbuckers, and I don't typically like humbuckers.
@byusnowboarder does it get high gain when cranked I know a guy that told me if i buy one these kits he will build me one I really like that old Marshall sound kind of the otne Van halen gets on his first album
a jtm45 is not good for a van halen tone its warm spongey bluesy overdrive. a plexi is aggresive and much better suited for van halen. i have a ceriatone plexi 50 1987x and i get a pretty accurate van halen tone its nice
@byusnowboarder Try a solid state plug-in rectifier, for example, (if the rect is an EZ81) the Weber Copper-Cap rectifier fits right in the EZ81 9A socket, and the sponginess will lessen or even go away completely.
@punkeratheart No need. I don't have this amp anymore. that would probably help with the squishiness, but I really do prefer a plexi. My buddy had a real JTM45 with a copper cap and I still liked the plexi a lot more. The JTm45 is amazing with humbuckers though, I'll definitely give it that. Just not my flavor personally. I liked my Ceriatone better than his Metro and vintage JTM45 for what it's worth.
@byusnowboarder Just a side note, I find that along with the SS plug in recto, using speakers with big heavy ceramic magnets will also increase the touch-sensitivity and clarity. The low-wattage rated alnico speakers are coveted for their breakup and spongey compression, but if you play a rhythm guitar style that requires percussive attack, you want something like a 2x12 with a G-12 T75 and a V-30 (or a 4x12 with 2 of each in "X" formation). For 18 watters, I like 4x10s too, or 1x10 and 1x15.
Thanks. These amps sound better with les pauls in my opinion, and I usually can't stand les pauls. I have since sold this amp and now I have nik's Plexi clone, and I like it even more than the JTM45 (tighter bottom-end, more headroom, more mid-gain sounds, less loose).
It's one of my originals. It should make it onto my next album. This is a great little amp, but I sold it and now I have a Ceriatone Plexi which I prefer. It's less loose and saggy. This distorts a lot like a tweed deluxe, but the plexi is cleaner (more headroom), and tighter gain.
No, I don't have a mastervolume built in. It was pretty loud when it was clean, and my camera has a built-in compressor on the mic so it doesn't overload it. I think you'd be fine without a master on this amp.
It's even smaller than a smallbox. I built the cab myself. It's actually a 1x12 combo that I set on its side to fit on the cab. a smallbox would still be a few inches wider.
Thanks man. This amp sounds so much better in person. I've been meaning to throw another video up that show's it's sound better, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Killer, killer amp.
Man, this is a great sounding amp with lots of potential. You like it better than ac15 handwired? I am leaning toward the ac15hw. Any suggestions? I like Kings of Leon especially their early blues stuff, Radiohead, Coldplay, U2, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Muse, John Lee Hooker, etc. What's your favorite?
Like I said, the Gabriel and the creme Brulee are my favorites. This amp is great, but it has too much sag for me. You're going to have to go out there and play as many amps as you can to determine which one is your sound. Audioslave uses a JCM800 (another amp I love), Radiohead uses a VOX AC30, Coldplay uses Fender Devilles. U2 uses a VOX ac30. Muse uses a Deizel (I believe). Just try as many amps as you can, and you'll find your sound.
Yeah, it's totally out of tune, sorry 'bout that. I'll do another video of this amp sometime, I have a better cab that makes it sound even more glorious. These are great amps, and aren't really that loud (which is a plus to me).
I just checked ceriatone's site. Great prices and all of the comments over at HC are great. I have to decide between the JTM45 and the Plexi-50. I usually like more gain so the 50 will probably suit me better but all the great comments about the clean and semi-clean tones of the JTM45 is making my choice difficult.
the JTM 45 takes pedals better than any amp I've ever played. With a crunchbox it sounds like a JCM 800. With a fulldrive ii, it can sound like Clapton from the beano era, and an OCD sounds great for just a little bit of hair. I'm sure the plexi 50 is great too, it'll just be about twice as loud.
No, the model number is 1965. I'd say they're worth from $350-$450 depending on where you live. It's a really bassy cab, but it sounds cool, and it's totally portable.
for rock, absolutely. For Metal, I think there are better amps. It takes pedals really well, but it's more of a blues/rock amp. It's not meant for metal like a JCM 800 or anything like that. So, if you want metal, get a Peavey JSX, or a Mesa, or a JCM 800 or a Diezel or something like that.
If you like mass distortion, i recommend the JCM800. They both have good cleans, but the JTM45 has GREAT cleans. It has more sag than a JCM800, so it'll be more bluesy. The JTM is more vintage (Hendrix, AC/DC, Clapton), and the JCM 800 is more crisp and biting (randy rhoades, sabbath, etc). They're both great amps, you can't go wrong with either, but the jcm800 has a lot more gain for that "mass distortion" sound you are referring to.
Hi, sorry, but would you mind telling me what song your playing at the start of the clip?. You play it a few times throughout, with that run on the bass strings. Thanks :)
I have a Ceriatone JTM-45 Too. Brilliant amp!!. I'm using mine with an SSS strat, and it sounds just as good (mebbe better ;)) as this setup!. Ceriatone are gods!!.
is the JTM45 nice for oldschool heavy metal tones ? such as sabbath ... hendrix tones as well . looking for some "power stoner rock " tone. does the JTM 45 accepts well FX pedal
By itself, I wouldn't say it's capable of heavy metal tones, but it eats pedals alive, it loves them. I think it'd be the perfect amp for power stoner rock. That or a Matamp, but I'd probably choose the JTM. It's got tons of bass. This is for sale still...
you don't have to be jealous anymore, I'm selling it. $950 plus shipping and handling in a 1x12 combo. let me know if you're interested. It's really a killer amp. I'd take the cleans over any Fender any day.

If I want to try another one, I have to sell one of my amps first. I really like this amp though, it's really amazing. yeah, it's a miracle. Completely totalled the car. She was in a civic, he was in a 2000 Chevy silverado, ran a red light, and t-boned her. She just suffered a concussion and a big gash on her head. We're really lucky though. If she had had a passenger, they'd be dead right now. I'm just glad she's ok.
Well, my friend has offered to build me a matamp series 2000 clone, and I'd need to sell this amp to pay for it. However, now I've been changing my mind lately because I think I enjoy the JTM more. It's a great amp. If I did end up selling this, I'd probably just buy another kit from Nik in the future and built another one, they're great amps. I used to love fenders. They're too stiff for me, I like more sag. All my amps have tube rectifiers and low power. Fenders are great though. I can get this JTM 45 to sound like a RI twin no problem, it just doesn't have quite the volume.

On 7 they get a little bit more gain, on 8 they're starting to overdrive, and on 10, they distort. The JTM doesn't have such a wide curve between clean and distortion. You can still find semi-cleans in there, but the range isn't quite as large as a vox (nothing has a range like a vox). That being said, it still does semi-cleans well.
Also, sorry for two posts, but how difficult would it be to modify it to accept 6V6 or EL84 tubes, and how would that effect clean headroom?
