Jussi B's actually quote was that GdS "Could be #1 if he put his mind to it". Because of GdS's poor technique JB thought poorly of his singing. Like others JB thought DiStefano would squander his gift, which he did. DiStefano, when he was younger, did however leave us some rather glorious recordings which promised of what might have been....if he had put his mind to it.
Very fine singing. I love Di Stefano for the technique and interpretation. However, for the sheer beauty of tone in this aria (as well as technique), I go to Gigli and Caruso.
grandi tenori, maestro, is a great interpretation for one of the most beautiful and dificult arias, only Gigli and a little tenors quantity have the capacity and the technic for singing this aria. God bless you and your eternal voice.
wondrful performence, I think that Salvatore Licitra took Di Stefano reference when he perforemed for the film "The man who cried" starting Jonny Dep, I just heard about Di Sterfano a few months ago and I realy like him but my favirite tenor is still Mario Lanza
Apart from always listening to something just unrepeatable and unforgettable in the young Di Stefano, I have to say that at 23 years old he had the musicianship and interpretive genius that any real artist would want to achieve at any stage of his/her career. That's why he is my eternal idol.
I agree, to have this understanding of what the words mean at such a young age is truly remarkable. Pippo always said that (for him) it was the words that carried the meaning and he caressed every word he ever sang.
This is unbelievalbe! The singing and interpretation are superb.. its no wonder with this ability to interpret, Callas had such great respect for him.
Thanks, this is the best way to wake up, he is the best, very soft and tender voice, voce di testa and piano like no one, even Pavarotti and Dvorsky said that Di Stefano is the best, and guys, after this song, Totally agree.
I have a CD with many of those from 1944, really wonderful. I almost can't listen to post-1950's of his recordings because my throat starts to hurt when I listen to it... (don't bash me folks, it's not my fault :D )
amazing talent, no wonder carreras is said that di stafao is the best, however the voices i liked the most and depence on the opera were kraus and corelli. best aida was corelli and best lucrezia borgia was kraus, so on and so forth.
Kraus and Corelli in the same sentence! Both were gentlemen, true. Both had great technique. But Corelli's technique is seldom praised. Because he had natural qualities. Kraus' technique is praised the way one would say a girl has "beautiful feelings". It means her curves deserve no comment.
Comparing Corelli and Kraus is like comparing Beluga and All Bran.

Qui Di stefano supera anche Kraus, nella dizione, nell'abbandono estatico e nella bellezza vocale.La sua voce in questa fase era in ordine.

To me the best rendition of this aria is B. Gigli. NO other one can equal him in thios aria.
Yet the all around tenor of this and last century is G. De Stefano

I wonder what Virgil Thompson meant when he said Di Stefano's voice was "not an organ of great beauty". What the fuck did he listen to?

Pippuzzu Di Stefano fu spesso criticato perché non era disponibile a compromessi.
Grandissimo, Pippuzzu, sei sempre nei cuori dei catanesi.
