good explanation of the basics of the offside rule, I actually learned something today even though I watch up to 7 games a week! I didn't realise there had to be 2 defenders (or that the goalkeeper was one of them) ahead of the attacker, thanks
In American Football, offside rule is definetely reasonable, but soccer...i don't think offside rule is neccessary because too much dispute between refs and players and too much mistransaction during the show. The fan wants action continuously and enjoy to watch each team to score more goals. Judgement will be served fairly to both sides with no offside rule applied...this offside rule should be eliminated.
If the attacking player at the moment of the pass is positioned between the last defending field-player (goalie is excluded here) and the goal-line he is offside.
That's it!
It ain't hard, but the visual aid is the bit that works in this explanation.
@dominice112 that's wrong...he clearly explains in the video that there are 2 defending players involved, and the goalie usually counts as one of them since he is usually the closest player to the goal line.
@dominice112 OMG did you even watch the video? If there are 2 defenders between the attacker and the goal line, he is onside. The two defenders usually includes the goalkeeper because he is usually the closest defending player to the goal line. You can not exclude the goalkeeper if he is one of the two defending players nearest the goal line. If the goalkeeper is in the other half, for whatever reason, then 2 defenders come in to play. You are 100% wrong
how about a rule for giving leeway to the restraining line of an arms length or a meter? this would open up more opportunities for scoring and a more exciting game
@TheJayChay He does clarify that, if you watch it properly. I've gone through several videos here to find one to explain the offside rule to my American friends, and this is the clearest I've seen. Nice one GRtalkinghead! :)
@mousepotato66 the law is closer to the goal line than the second last opponent. If the goal keeper comes out to punch away the ball from a corner and misses, and theres one defender on the goal line, one attacker in between the defender on the goal line and the goalkeeper coming for the ball and all the other players are closer to the HALF way line than the goal keeper . If the ball drops to an attacker who passes it to the attacker in between the defender and the goal keeper. the player is off
thanks for the input and encouragement

Since there are 11 players in each team

@XzZyBiT
Offside rule explained in one sentence;
If the attacking player at the moment of the pass is positioned between the last defending field-player (goalie is excluded here) and the goal-line he is offside.
That's it!
It ain't hard, but the visual aid is the bit that works in this explanation.

@anthonyblyth87
The goalie has no part in the offside rule. Like he explained, the goalie doesn't set the offside line. It's the defender.
What I said is a 100% correct.

@anthonyblyth87
Haha :) No :)
The reason he refers to the goalie as a defender is to explain that the goalie does not set the offside line, but the other defender does.
And to quote him; "it's the other player who determines when offside is called." NOT the goalie :)
Go check :)
And I do understand why you are confused :)

@donniev007 that would be too hard to manage, where do you draw the line?
