Overclocking AMD Phenom II X4 940 (4Ghz on Air)

I overclocked my 955BE x 4 to 3.8ghz with 1.3volts. How is that even possible?

There are no rules at overclocking, and there are no limits, so it may boot up, but it will crash later 100 %

I got the 955 with a massive cpu cooler and i can only get 4.0 ghz reaching 66c (and then restarting) under load so how the hell have you got a 940 at the same frequency?

@CustomPcsUK there are many factors to successful oc, strong motherboard, strong chip (specific one, they all made same process but they are different quality) cooling etc. i guess i'm lucky with a good chip BUT, that 4ghz isn't 24/7, i can only do 3.7-3.8 stable.

@hecjr82 with this cpu u can 3.6 on any aircooler really. AMD overdrive is not not stable, but u may have a hardtime keeping the settings.

You're gonna have this for like two months. Air cooling doesn't really support such high overclocking, get a liquid cooling... it's more difficult to build but it's gonna make your CPU survive for like ten years instead.

i have now a coolermaster v10(the dual 120mm fan,triple bank,peltier cooler)and it works no better than the coolermaster HYPER 212 +,so for some reason you didnt do something right?i can think of a couple things

i think you might have had the 212 regular model,or a bad fan or something?i used 2 120mm fans in push and pull.the new + version is exactly on par with the very best #1 prolimatec megalems within a degree

940 is the first Phenom II Quad core, this is a AM2+ processor, it does not support DDR3 memory, 955 does. 955 is a AM3 processor. and there's a small HT Link speed difference.

The point is you can overclock the processor to 4GHZ but it wont be stable when you try to run and application that demands high processing power like games. The computer might freeze up and restarts itself.

Have you checked the performance tests with the V8? Really, it gives very poor performance for the money. Im not saying it doesnt cool your CPU properly. It's just way overpriced. There are quite a few coolers that beat it in performance as well as price. The V8 has such a high price for its looks, not its performance.

well no, these are other programs u can download, small tho, CPUZ is commonly use to view current processor speed and other info, and everest , coretemp and true temp is commonly use for temp detection, or if u have a newer amd u can download the AMD OVerdrive it give it all. as for overclocking itself, it's suggested to be done under BIOS

first of all since u have a brand name pc (dell) , i'm pretty sure there's almost no tweak options for you at all, and about the slow fan speed, it can be the cool and quiet tech, which u can switch it off from bios, otherwise, it would adjust it's speed according to the temp

the trick is cooling, this chip is known to do 4.2 on stock voltage, but that was on phase, as long as u keep it cool, as muhc as possible, water cooling or better, then u don't need much voltage at all u should reach 4Ghz,

i didn't oc all that much, last stable is 3.7 but still kinda creep out at times ,92mm cooler just doesn't cut it lol. 4Ghz is highest it validates

a cpu heatsink with a fan is air cooling, a heatsink waterblock and tubes and other devices to run liquid called liquid or water cooling, and there are more advanced cooling solutions

just saw ur 955 rig vid, yes i would suggest u to get a better power supply. and it can be a factor, note that 480w are not all usable, most of ur performance parts takes power from only the 12v rail
