i went for a walk yesterday in NJ and found an old doe skull but no antlers...I saw some fresh scrapes and old rubs...maybe I should go back there in late winter...
Hey very nice sheds and nice video...i am 15 and me and my friend r leaving to go shed hunting for 3 days see if we cant find some nice sheds like those
but then how did you find all the old sheds without them being eaten?? here in wisconsin i saw scrapes and i looked 7 times and followed their paths for miles and looked at their bedding spots and the squirells eat em fast here cuz there are no sheds at all
Usually around here they just eat the points for the most part. I have found antlers that were chewed to almost nothing, those ones appear to be 3 yrs old thoe.
thats wierd cuz there is nothing were i live huh there is a 3 7 and 9 point deer that still have there racks cuz they cant make enough calcium to "pop" the antlers off, and some of them are really stupid, i called one in twice
My dog is trained good when it comes to finding sheds and I still will find more then he does. There is alot of deer scent out there and some times they can get confused. They will how ever find you antlers that you would of otherwise missed for sure.
I was reading up on training a lab to hunt sheds (google it...it's there) and for Christmas, my wife bought me a chocolate lab puppy and now, at 12 weeks old, her only toys have been antler and with 10+ inches of snowcover, I have 'hidden' several pieces in the trees beyond our yard and then led her out 'close' but still 20 yds or so away and told her "GET THE BONE!" and she found every antler I hid in < 5 mins! Finding 20+/day I hear is easy with a trained lab! She'll earn her puppy chow!!!
Your right about them being easy to miss sometimes. I walked off a trail to try to find a grouse that had flushed next to me and walked into an old moose shed. It was five feet off a trail I had walked probably 50 times in several years hunting and looking for sheds. I need to get a dog that can smell them. I tried to post a video of the sheds I found two weeks ago but I don't know how well it came out. It's titled shed antlers '08.
Yea they are so easy to miss.I had been walking by a set for last 3 or 4 years and finally found them last fall when I stepped on one,I couldn't bieleve I had not seen them in the prievious years.I checked out your video nice finds looks like you were looking in fresh snow still.I think I might put to gether one more video of shed hunting for this year should be done in a week or so.
I notice you couldn't help showing off your trophy room a little bit. I would too if mine looked like yours.
The area I was in had a little fresh snow on top but it was mostly old snow and it's finally starting to leave. I'm going to get one of my tree-stands tomorrow or on Monday and I will be looking for antlers there as well. Then shed season may be over for me till fall as it looks like I may be able to go fishing soon.
Man I have to move to Canada. I found a few this year, but most just 3 points, few broken spikes, found one six pointer really heavy for around here, not there apparently. ha ha.
you should do a video on your trophy room please
