Launchpad Tutorial: Part 1 — Setting Up (English)

I'd like to know what to put in the remote script (ableton) configurationt text file to make the launchpad work with the 8 macro knobs (without midi mapping) - I can do this real easy for a device which has nobs, but how do you do the same thing for a decive (launchpad) that uses a range of buttons to emulate a nob ? what do you type in ?

why is this advertised and described as a midi a midi device if it runs strictly through USB?

\you know, i decided to buy one of these, and uhh, now sometimes i have to restart the software 3 or 4 times before it sees the hardware or properly lightsit up. it's weird. It might light up a few buttons that are unresponsive. I don't know. is all this normal, because it seems a little volatile and overly quirky.

So I bought the launchpad with ableton live launch pad edition. Nothing is working for me and I'm sorta disappointed with everything I think it's the fact that I don't have a mac and two I don't have ableton live 8 an I'm stuck with the crappy launchpad edition. I can't really use the launchpad either It doesn't let me choose an input and the output is only microsoft GS wavetable synth can anyone help me? ): I was really happy to get this but ended up wasting money please change my mind!!

Hi! I have a question... I'm a dj for almost 5 years now but i've come to the point where i want to experiment more. Not just playing one song into another but be a little more creative... Now that i've seen the launchpad it seems a fun way to work on that.

But here is my question. I have no experience with Ableton at all and i don't play an instrument so i don't know any notes...

Are there things i must try first? Is this a good thing for me? Thx!

@Salires11 The Launchpad allows you to be expressive and musical without necessarily having to play a musical instrument. Creating original music will require some basic knowledge of music theory. We'd recommend looking online for as many tutorials as possible to get used to Ableton Live and realise it's potential. Once you understand Live a bit more, using the Launchpad will be relatively easy.

Do I have to install the Ableton Live version that comes in the Disk. Im already using another higher version (8.1.1). Launchpad appears as Control Surface, but not as a Midi Port, or Input or Output! I don´t understand. HEEEELP! Where do I post my question in the answerbase? I cant find it!!! Is anyone else having the same problems???

@Muirragui If you already have a later version of Live installed then you do not need to install the version on the disk, but you will need to install the Launchpad drivers. You can install those on the disk or download the latest Launchpad drivers from the Novation website. Once the drivers are installed if you restart Live the Launchpad should appear as a MIDI port.

@crazykidkieran You can use the Launchpad as a typical MIDI device to trigger synths or map MIDI assignments in other DAWs, however the Launchpad was created for use with Live and as such allows a lot more control features.

@littlemimus you can "draw" notes into ableton or use the computers keys so you could make a whole tune without a piano style keyboard. (would take you ages tho)

a piano keyboard just makes it a lot easier and quicker.

if you are going to buy the launchpad (which isn't that expensive but still a lot of money for some)

at least buy a little 25 key midi controller keyboard (you can pick these up on ebay very cheap) it would make your life so much easier :)

i purchased a launchpad the other day, though i already had many sets made in ableton live 8.0.1, can i open/convert my sets to open in the 'launchpad' edition of ableton?

@WaveBite You would not be able to open the sets in the Launchpad edition. The best way to get around this would be to open them in the standard version of Ableton Live.

i seemed to have found a way around it! if in change what i want in my 8.0.1 version then open in 8.1.6 it works fine, i just cant save it 8.1.6 :(

Do you have the latest updates for Ableton Live? Are you connecting the Launchpad using a hub or connecting directly to the computer? Do you have any other USB devices?

i do have the latest updates for ableton live. the Launchpad is directly connected to the USB port into my computer, and i do have 2 other USB devices also connected (mouse and speakers)

i installed my launchpad on my friends computer and he has higher USB speeds and more bandwidth distribution and it worked flawless. thanks for the help, now i just gotta but a new computer :/

Ensure that you have an output device selected in Live's audio preferences. Please consult the Live manual/documentation for more info on setting up audio input/output.

yea i never had to change that in the 1st place. but i did look @ it and it's set to my normal speakers i'm just not getting any playback but i see it. There's definately no manual that came w/ this thing either... this blows i really wanna start learning to use this thing.
